Pattern Synopsis:
Strong, expansive longwave troughing draped across most of the
continent east of the Rockies will slide east today. Ridging and
associated height rises will temporarily work across the Great
Lakes this evening and tonight, with subsidence supporting
surface high pressure building across much of the Mississippi
Valley. A second trough looks to dig across southern Canada over
the northern Great Plains, strengthening a cyclone that will
trek into the Upper Midwest by the end of the period.
Forecast Details:
Bitter cold and lake effect snow -- The main story across the Great
Lakes continues to be the bitter cold conditions set to be in place
through today and tonight. Current wind chills are between -10 and
-30 F for most areas, and similar readings are anticipated
through the afternoon and tonight. Mainly light westerly flow
will also continue to support lake effect snow showers across
parts of northwest lower and eastern upper through much of the
period. An additional 1-4" are expected across this area
through tonight with locally higher amounts possible. As has
been the case so far, the primary concern with snowfall today
and tonight is visibility reductions. Very cold temperatures
resulting in small snowflake size combined with gusty winds
will lead to rapid drops in visibility underneath any heavier
lake effect snow bands -- including the potential for whiteout
conditions at times. Travel conditions will only be exacerbated
by cold temperatures making effective treatment of roadways
difficult. Winds will shift to southwesterly tonight,
refocusing lake effect activity across the Tip of the Mitt and
parts of Mackinac county. Lake enhanced snowfall looks to
begin at the tail end of the period ahead of the aforementioned
system, but will reserve focused discussion on this additional
snowfall for the long term section.

Slowly moderating temperatures Wednesday afternoon into the first
half of this weekend. Another chunk of colder air (not as cold as
what we have currently) then moves in for Saturday night into Sunday
night. An Alberta Clipper system and associated short wave are
expected to lead to excellent lake enhancement in south southwest
flow favored areas Wednesday into Wednesday evening (generally the
Lake Michigan shorelines). Could see localized 6+ inches of snow
accumulation along the immediate Lake Michigan shorelines generally
from Manistee north northeast through Leelanau and western Antrim
and Emmett counties on into western Mackinac and Chippewa counties.
Headlines will almost certainly be needed. Winds then veer into the
northwest Wednesday night into Thursday sending the lake bands
farther inland. Moisture, however is slowly waning during that time
period but still could see some spots getting a few inches of
accumulation Wednesday night. Just some light lake effect snow
showers Thursday night into Friday as winds bend back into the
southwest. Moisture is on the thin side so no big accumulations are
expected at that time. Better moisture returns late Friday night
into Saturday as another short wave moves through the flow aloft
ramping up snow shower activity as winds veer northwest once again.
Could see a few inches of accumulation in favored areas. Another
shot of colder air returns Sunday into Sunday night with lake effect
snow showers expected to continue. Extended guidance then has milder
air trying to make a push to the north next Monday.
