Current forecast on track as upstream shortwave with deeper
moisture is poised to spread across the area overnight. As
deeper moisture spreads over the top of excellent thermodynamic
profiles in the lower levels, lake effect snow showers will
begin to ramp up over the next few hours. Initial
west/northwest flow will gradually veer more northwest by Friday
morning. This will bring the Lake Superior moisture tap more
into play with signals of a dominate band developing south/west
of Gaylord in northern lower and another west of Sault Ste.
Marie in eastern Upper. Expect rapid drops in visibility within
these snow bands and travel may become difficult at times. The
morning commute could definitely be impacted in some areas with
snow covered roads and slick conditions. No changes to current
headlines.
Increased winds a bit on Friday with northwest winds gusting
20+ mph at times and would expect some blowing/drifting of the
fluffy snow, further reducing visibility in some areas.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

Lake effect has largely fallen apart across northern lower.
Meanwhile across eastern upper, still some decent banding off of
Lake Superior. The question going forward is what the lake effect
machine will do and whether or not additional headlines will be
needed.
A short wave trough and the associated moisture are currently
evident on water vapor imagery over northern Minnesota. This
system will barrel into Michigan late tonight into Friday
morning increasing the intensity and extent of lake effect.
Mean lower level winds will continue to be out of the west
northwest through early tonight then veer more northwesterly
later tonight into Friday. Model soundings look good with
growing inversion heights (upwards of 11,000+ feet) and mid
level moisture targeting the dendritic growth zone (dgz) which
is between -10 and -18 C. Therefore expect more organized
banding to develop later this evening and especially overnight
into Friday. A double fetch off of Lake Superior and Lake
Michigan after the winds turn northwest is expected. Am going
with several counties in northwest lower with a winter weather
advisory in effect from late tonight through early Saturday
morning. Snowfall amounts generally in the 4 to 8 inch range
with locally higher amounts possible. Meanwhile, closer to the
Lake Michigan shoreline eastward into Roscommon county 2 to 5
inches are expected with that advisory. Across western and
central Chippewa county, lake effect will continue so will
extend the current winter weather advisory through early
Saturday as well for potentially another 5 to 10 inches of snow.
Winds will be gusty at times as well so areas of blowing snow
are possible in open areas.

An upper low hangs out over Quebec this weekend. In fact, though
part of this ejects out early next week, a significant piece remains
(more so than progged the last couple of days). Chilly air will be
maintained in the region around this feature. Another Arctic
shortwave and even colder air arrive from the north mid-week.
Light to at times moderate lake effect snow continues into part of
Friday night. Instability is abundant (850mb temps in the minus
upper teens), with a reasonably solid nw fetch (a touch of backing
probably occurs Fri night). But we are gradually drying, and
inversion heights slowly lowering. Snow amounts of 1-4" are broadly
expected in the snowbelts, highest in Charlevoix/Antrim/Otsego Cos,
and in much of Chippewa Co. Advisories will be in effect for these
areas for much of the night. Further, gradual diminishing trends are
expected thru the weekend, with smaller accums/12 hr period. Lake
effect will hang on most substantially in eastern upper MI (another
1-2" possible Saturday), but less than that elsewhere. Pops are at a
relative minimum Sunday into Monday night. Lake effect pops ramp up
again Tuesday and beyond, with our next shot of colder air.
Upper teens to mid 20s common for highs Saturday to Tuesday. Colder
after that; highs mostly in the teens to near 20f Wed/Thu, and the
Sault in particular may struggle to hit 10f on Wed. Widespread
single digit low temps by then, with some sub-zero readings,
especially in eastern upper MI.
