.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Issued at 330 AM EST Sun Jan 26 2025

Pattern/synopsis: An initial cold front is moving quickly across
the eastern lakes, with a secondary front making progress into
upper MI. High pressure over the central high plains extends
ridging into the OH Valley. Aloft, nw flow is already
reestablished. A moisture-starved wave digs across the area late
today, with additional energy and better moisture just upstream
by Monday morning.

Forecast: Wnw-flow lake effect snow is occurring, a fair bit
more vigorous on Superior than Lake MI. Will keep an eye on
trends for a little longer... might end up extending the
advisory for Chip Co later into the morning. For now will keep
the current headlines thru 7 am.

850mb thermal trof (into the mid minus teens) is crossing the
region early this morning. We are warm advecting by this
afternoon, with 850mb temps into minus single digits by evening.
As is typical, inversion heights will fall as warm advection
develops. Winds also back to wsw today. Lake effect snow will
diminish with time, though pops will be reasonably high in wnw
flow areas to start the morning. Only a slight chance for snow
by late in the day in wsw flow areas (far northern lower MI).
Daytime accums 1" to locally 2" in western Chippewa, less than
1" elsewhere.

Mainly quiet tonight. Deeper moisture remains upstream, though
layered clouds will increase with time. Perhaps a small chance
for some light snow very late tonight, with higher pops during
the day Monday. Sw surface winds will increase (though
increasing stability will limit the degree that winds can mix
down). Exposed areas can expect some blowing/drifting snow late
tonight.

Max temps today low-mid 20s for most, maybe upper 20s on the
coast near/south of Empire. Lows tonight mid teens to mid 20s,
and will be relatively early, with rising temps overnight.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:

Longwave troughing located across the eastern half of CONUS, will
provide enough support for occasional snow showers and gusty winds
through the long-term as shortwaves track through the flow. At the
end of the period, guidance continues to support ridging tracking
back into the Great Lakes region in advance of a developing low
pressure over the Plains.

Forecast Details:

At the start of the period Monday, a passing clipper to the north of
the region will aide in increasing winds region-wide. Gusts as high
as 30-40 mph will be possible, with the highest expected near the
Lake Michigan shoreline. Along with gusty winds, chances for
accumulating snowfall increase through the day as a more favorable
environment creeps into the region from the north. Best chances for
snow will be Monday afternoon through Monday night, especially in
the snow belts of eastern upper and northwest lower. Aformentioned
gusty winds combined with accumulating snowfall may result in
blowing/ drifting snow which could reduce visibilities and create
pockets of hazardous travel. Late Tuesday into Wednesday brings the
next system with widespread accumulating light to moderate snowfall
across much of the Northwoods. Winds will slowly decrease heading
into Tuesday/ Wednesday but still expected to be breezy with gusts
20+ mph, which could still produce visibility reductions during this
timeframe. Occasional lake effect snow showers will be possible into
Thursday ahead of ridging beginning to nose in from the southwest.
Aforementioned ridging will build in advance of a closed low
pressure thats progged to impact the region by the weekend. Guidance
continues to have several questions on how/where this feature will
evolve, so this will be something we will keep our eyes on in the
coming week.

A few lingering lake effect snow showers or flurries this
afternoon, otherwise dry. Conditions trending toward VFR this
afternoon and tonight (with pockets of MVFR early). A strong
cold front approaches the region on Monday. The gradient will
tighten and winds will gust 35+kts from the southwest. Areas of
blowing snow are likely. A cold front will push through later in
the day with increasing chances of snow showers. VFR cigs early,
with areas of MVFR cigs/vsbys later in the day.
