A relatively quiet, but chilly, night. Lake effect
clouds/flurries are of course slower to depart than earlier
progged. But leftover lake effect is eroding from almost all
sides at this point, and mostly clear skies will emerge in most
areas by earlier overnight. That's just in time for initial
cirrus ahead of the next system to start to make some inroads.
Min temps may not get quite as cold as earlier forecast,
especially where lake clouds are hanging on longest.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:

North/south oriented surface ridge in the process of steadily
building east into the Great Lakes early this afternoon. Attendant
shot of partially modified Arctic air spreading overhead, as evident
by current temperatures running several degrees below normal in the
teens and 20s. While slowly subsiding, still gusty northwest winds
adding considerable more chill to the air. Despite an excellent over-
water thermal gradient with H8 level temperatures well down into the
negative teens celsius, lowering convective cloud depths and deep
layer drying tied to that ridge axis has significantly throttled
back on lake snow organization and intensity. Still seeing a few
light snow showers and flurries rotating off the big waters, but
producing little in the way of any accumulation.

High pressure will continue its steady east progress, reaching
vicinity the eastern seaboard by early Sunday afternoon. Digging
shortwave trough and its attendant steadily deepening surface low
will be quick on its heels...reaching the western Great Lakes by
later Sunday. This system will set the stage for another bout of
wintry weather as we head through the second half of Sunday on into
early next work week.

Primary Forecast Concerns:

Temperature trends tonight with focus centering on rain/snow
evolution and attendant snow amounts Sunday afternoon.

Details:

Any lingering lake snows expected to end as we head through the
remainder of this afternoon, with lake clouds likely eroding shortly
thereafter. Clear skies expected through much of the overnight, with
just some late night increasing higher clouds with beginning stages
of top-down saturation ahead of that next wave. Combination of clear
skies and light winds will allow for a good nocturnal temperature
response, with widespread lows in the teens expected by early Sunday
morning. Wouldn't be terribly surprised to see some of our
traditional ice-box locations make a run into the single digits.

Clouds will continue to increase and lower/thicken as we head
through Sunday morning. Expect top-down saturation to steadily
complete from southwest to northeast through the afternoon as strong
surge of isentropic upglide on nose of 40+ knot low level jet
spreads overhead. A marginal low level thermal environment
(temperatures in the 30s) supports precipitation starting off as
rain or a rain/snow mixture across our southwest counties, with
precipitation transitioning to more snow the further northeast one
goes as evaporation cooling erodes the already shallow melting
layer. Expect temperatures to fall near freezing rather quickly once
snow starts, supporting some accumulation by evening. Current trends
support slushy snow accumulations of an inch or less across the
interior highlands of northern lower Michigan as well as parts of
eastern upper Michigan by sunset Sunday...with lesser amounts
elsewhere. Gusty southeast winds will develop with that low level
jet but wet nature of snow should preclude any significant blowing
and drifting concerns. Snow will continue Sunday night into early
next week, bringing at least some additional accumulation. See that
information in the long term section to follow.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...

Pattern Synopsis and Forecast:

A surface low pressure system and upper level energy will swing
through the Northwoods Sunday night into Monday, resulting in a
swath of precipitation (if not snow, quickly transitioning to snow).
Farther south and closer to the coasts in northern lower,
temperatures will be marginal for a period, with relatively low
SLRs. That being said, there will be enough lift and moisture to
accrue a couple of inches of snow, with the best potential for
impactful snow ~the Straits northward in eastern upper Michigan.
Still some discrepancies overall due to the sfc low track and
thus actual snow amounts. However, think the concept of sfc low
tracking near the Straits, lower SLRs across much of northern
lower, and better sustained lift/higher SLRs across the E UP
will result in this region (E UP) having the best potential for
impactful snow through ~Monday morning. Have 3 to 6 in this
region, perhaps trickling a little south into the Tip of the
Mitt.

Sfc low lingers northeast of the region on Monday, with marginally
cold northwest flow resulting in lake effect snow showers. Inversion
heights rise to ~850-800 mb along with plenty of low level and
synoptic aided moisture/lift as upper low vorts rotate around and
through northern MI. Thus, there will be the potential for
accumulating lake effect snow across northwest snow belts Monday
into Monday night. Some conflicting signals to an extent, vigorous
upper low/vort moving overhead promotes an uptick in general snow
potential and lake effect accums (seems run to run these little
vorts are shifting places/locations/timing), but 850Ts/low level
thermal profiles will be marginal. That being said, current thinking
at this time is for a couple of inches (let's tentatively say 1 to
4") of lake effect across northwest snowbelts, with the potential
for locally higher amounts in the typical northwest flow bullseyes
like Mancelona vicinity. Lingering snow showers/lake effect possible
early on Tuesday as additional energy moves in aloft, but should be
of very little consequence.

Some energy to the south of the region later Tuesday/Tuesday night
is progged to remain south of the region, but a few pieces of
guidance bring a close brush to the area. Worth monitoring but
ensemble guidance suggests this stays to the south of the region.
Few rain/snow showers will be possible Thursday as energy to the
north drops quick moving frontal feature into the area (mainly
north). Then warm advection and sfc low will result in at least the
potential for precipitation chances once again later Friday into
next weekend.
