Pattern/synopsis: Strong low pressure (982mb) will lift from MKG
to APN Wednesday afternoon.

Forecast: Rain bands have been diminishing and reforming in the
north half of the forecast area. Primary surge of stronger
isentropic ascent/moisture is advancing into the southern lakes.
This will overspread the area this evening, with widespread
precip (mostly rain) into Wednesday. Strong low level jet (1km
southerly winds 30-45kt) will be in place across lower MI
tonight into Wed morning, feeding moisture northward. QPF for
tonight and Wednesday combined is generally in the 1.00-1.25"
range across all of northern MI. This and snowmelt will get
northern lower MI rivers/streams on the rise (snowpack is less
ripe in eastern upper MI, and response should be more muted up
there). No mention of thunder for Wednesday just yet, per
limited instability, though most of northern lower MI is in
general thunder on day 2 per SPC.

P-type concerns thru Wed morning are largely confined to Chippewa
Co. Plenty of warm air aloft across the rest of northern MI to
keep precip liquid, and do not anticipate surface temps going
lower tonight with low-level warm/moist advection and widespread
clouds in place. Sault MI is comfortably rain now, but for a
brief period overnight near-term guidance drops the rain-snow
line back almost on top of the Sault. Far nw Chip Co (Paradise
and north) will more confidently see a mix. The BL will remain
above freezing, and the deep airmass is much too warm for
effective dendrite production. Thus low SLRs (circa 6-1) will be
present, even where it does occasionally snow. From late tonight
into Wednesday, Paradise gets up to 3" of total snowfall, and
the rest of the western Chip Co is a lot less. No advisory
needed for our western Chip/Mack Co zones, at least not yet.
But...

Things could get pretty messy as cold air starts to make
initial inroads into n/w sections Wed afternoon. The cold air
surge at/near the surface is stronger/faster than somewhat
aloft. It thus undercuts warmer air aloft. Beginning at midday,
the grids start to introduce some sleet into far western
Chip/Mack Cos. The rain/snow transition band somewhat slowly
pushes eastward with time later Wed. As it does so, the p-type
transition band widens, and freezing rain (ZR) gets added to the
mix. By 6pm, the mixed precip band (including IP/ZR) has
reached Pickford-St Ignace-CVX-Suttons Bay-Arcadia. ZR amounts
could be measurable (though less than 0.10"), in the UP in
particular, where the transition zone is moving more slowly.
We've been mentioning flash freeze potential for a bit now as we
head into Wed evening...the above factors into that looking
like it could have some impact.

Lows tonight mid 30s to lower 40s. Highs tonight will have a
wide range...mid 30s at the Sault, mid 40s for GLR/TVC, mid 50s
Gladwin/Standish.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...

Pattern Synopsis:

Current split flow pattern over North America is expected to
continue active weather starting with the well advertised cyclone
currently centered over the southern plains. Cold air will begin to
advect into the Great Lakes region at the start of the long term,
transitioning liquid rain to a quick shot of snow fall Wednesday
Night/Thursday morning. Cold air subsiding over the CWA will return
the well known old friend of lake effect snow showers to the classic
snowbelts this Friday. Otherwise... main focus will remain on
seasonably cool temperatures settling into the region this weekend
accompanied by chances of snow showers.

The second half of the long term remains quiet as midlevel heights
begin to rise Monday, pushing cool/polar air northernly into Canada
and leaving the upper Great Lakes in a zonal flow regime.
Conditions should become milder and dry through the first half
of next week with highs surging above normal for mid March.

Primary Forecast Concerns/Key Messages:

Primary focus for the forecast period remains on the first part as
this surface level cyclone continues to deepen and transit across
the CWA. The core of low pressure will be centered directly over
northern Michigan at 00Z Thursday (Wednesday night). Some scattered
convectively driven showers will be ongoing, but cold air advection
from the backside of this system will quickly back winds to the
north and transition rain to snowfall. Precipitation wont be much of
a concern at this point as snow amounts will be less than an inch
for most parts other than areas near Whitefish point and around the
Leelanau due to small lake response. Main focus remains on the
potential for flash freezing Wednesday night as overnight
temperatures drop into the teens. Any melting snow or leftover rain
could cause some hazardous roadways for the Thursday morning
commute.

Precip should taper off Thursday afternoon and return Friday as
classic northwest flow lake effect lingers across a few of the
snowbelts. Weak delta T's and light winds will keep amounts
around an inch south of the bridge with slightly higher totals
expected for localized parts of Whitefish Bay. Cold weather and
chances of light snow linger through the weekend before mild air
begins to build this Monday. Warm southerly temperatures will
slowly build temperatures well above average next week with
highs in the 40s and even 50s for parts of northern lower by the
middle of next week... which will be a big relief to such a
heavy snowfall of a winter.
