Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Gaylord MI
345 AM EDT Mon Apr 14 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Showers at times today, especially north.

- Windy and becoming much colder tonight, rain showers become
more extensive late tonight and turn to snow

- Lake enhanced snows linger into Tuesday with gusty winds and cold
  temperatures.

- Warming trend through the end of the week with rain chances.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Issued at 346 AM EDT Mon Apr 14 2025

Pattern/synopsis: Low pressure is deepening over northern Lk
Superior, ahead of a closing-off 500mb low. Northern MI remains
in a warm-advection zone ahead of the surface low and associated
cold front, but that front will cross the area this morning/
early afternoon.

Forecast: The low deepens this morning to 993-992mb, then
remains steady as it exits Lk Superior to eventually pass just
south of James Bay tonight. Winds will pick up, especially
behind the cold front, but the intial push of cold advection is
not crushing. Periods of mid-April sunshine will support
relatively mild temps into parts of the afternoon. However,
temps will start to tumble by late afternoon, a trend that
accelerates into tonight.

Steepish mid-level laps rates are found overhead, with a few
elevated TSRA just west of the office early this morning. These
migrate north to the eastern UP/Straits area today, and best
chance for any rumbles of thunder will be north of M-32.

Precip chances will remain highest in the ne half of the
forecast area. A dry slot is working into the western/southern
lakes, and pops do become lower as we move closer to midday,
especially in northern lower MI. Expect there to be a lull in
precip across northern lower for part of the afternoon, before
somewhat shallow low-level moisture starts to wrap back in late
in the day. Daytime QPF is as high as 0.25" in parts of Chippewa
Co, though most of the area is much less.

Gusty w winds for much of tonight, will start to veer to the nw
late in the overnight. This fetch taps colder air, with 850mb
temps nearing -8 to -10C by daybreak Tuesday. This is also when
broader/deeper wraparound moisture spools back into the region.
Only a bit of QPF is forecast this evening, highest in nw
Chippewa Co. Precip becomes more extensive overnight...just in
time for it to mix with and change to snow. Lake enhancement
will also occur late, in broadly wnw (but steadily veering)
1000-850mb flow. Eastern upper will be the first to go over,
with the higher terrain of northern lower MI starting to do the
same at 1-2am. Snow-liquid ratios will be hindered by an
initially warm BL, though they will improve with time overnight.
Overnight QPF is as high as 0.25" in the favored lake effect
areas (Mancelona to GLR), and near Paradise. Snow amounts will
be around 2" in these areas, in particular on grassy areas and
elevated surfaces. Roads will see less. TC/Petoskey/CAD/Sault
all could see closer to 1".

Wind gusts of 30-35mph will be common tonight, and will tend to
get a little higher toward daybreak. This will complicate
ongoing ice storm recovery.

Max temps today near 50f far north to mid 60s far se. Lows
tonight upper 20s to mid 30s.

&&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Issued at 346 AM EDT Mon Apr 14 2025

Pattern Synopsis and Forecast:

Lake enhanced snows will continue on Tuesday as various upper vorts
dance around northern MI and cold northwest flow oozes over the
lakes. Progged soundings show steep lapse rates up to ~800 mb and
good saturation through the column (at least early Tuesday morning),
with a degradation of moisture aloft and lift through the day. A
tight pressure gradient and boundary layer winds 30-40+ mph will
foster gusty northwest winds, gusts up to 40-45 mph possible at
times. Combine these winds with temperatures in the 30s and
temperatures will feel even colder. Total snow accumulations
(including Monday night) will range from 1 to locally 4" across
northwest snowbelts, with the higher end of the range within the
typical bullseyes across portions of northeastern Kalkaska, eastern
Antrim, western Otsego, and perhaps western Chippewa counties. The
more likely impact will be the strong winds coupled with the falling
snow moreso than the actual accumulations. Precipitation
lightens through the day, diminishing into the overnight hours.
Winds will remain breezy through the night, lessening on
Wednesday, but still with gusts to ~25 mph.

Heights build aloft during the mid to latter portions of this week
in response to energy diving into the Pac NW. Piece of energy and
subsequent low pressure system is progged to spread across the
nations mid-section out ahead/to the east of the aforementioned Pac
NW stuff, and spread into northern MI by the latter portions of the
week along with a noticeable uptick in moisture quality and
quantity. Thus, periods of rain will be possible. Will have to
see how far north the instability axis gets, but most guidance
progs it to remain south of the region at this time. Hints in
the guidance of somewhat mild temperatures and another chance
for precipitation in the extended.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z TUESDAY/...
Issued at 1145 PM EDT Sun Apr 13 2025

Deepening low pressure will lift NE out of the Upper Mississippi
Valley and thru Lake Superior overnight...continuing thru SE
Ontario Monday into Monday evening...finally reaching the
southern tip of James Bay by late Monday night. Waves of rain
showers will continue to develop ahead of this system...
impacting Northern Michigan over the next 24 hours. Rain showers
will begin to mix with snow showers Monday evening...eventually
change over to all snow showers late Monday night as much
colder air sweeps into our region behind the departing low. VFR
conditions will drop to MVFR as rain showers become more
widespread overnight into Monday. SE surface winds around 10
kts tonight will shift to the W/SW around midday Monday and
strengthen to 20 to 30 kts.
