Pattern Synopsis:
Longwave troughing will continue to slide off the Atlantic coast
this morning as the closed mid/upper-level low churns over Quebec.
Multiple embedded shortwaves look to rotate down from Hudson Bay
across Ontario/far northern Great Lakes through tonight. The
associated surface cyclone will slowly retrograde from Quebec back
over James Bay through the period, weakening with time as the
vertically-stacked system sees favorable advections get cut off.
Meanwhile, ridging will slide across the Mississippi Valley today as
a strong trough digs from the Four Corners over the southern Great
Plains, providing strong forcing aloft to generate a cyclone that
will trek into Oklahoma by Sunday morning.
Forecast Details:
Lake effect snow continues -- As expected, a noticeable downward
trend in lake effect activity compared to daylight hours has
materialized thus far tonight across northern lower Michigan.
Heaviest banding currently lies across portions of the eastern U.P.,
primarily targeting areas near Sault Ste. Marie that have largely
escaped higher snowfall totals up to this point. Best banding and
associated highest snowfall rates/accumulations are anticipated
across this area today into tonight with more favorable low-level
moisture in place. Furthermore, forecast soundings displaying
saturated low-levels firmly within the DGZ will allow for efficient
snowfall through tonight with SLRs around 20:1 or higher.
An additional 2-6" is expected across Chippewa county, with the
highest totals expected around the Sault Ste. Marie area and south.
Meanwhile, mainly light lake effect snow is expected south of the
bridge. An additional 1-2" is expected across the typical northwest
flow snowbelts through this evening. Otherwise, wind gusts to 20-35
mph will persist into tonight, potentially leading to minor
localized blowing snow across exposed areas.

Forecast Pattern:
A larger upper closed low continues to dominate eastern CAN and the
NE CONUS. With general upper ridging over the western CONUS,
northwest flow through the column continues to dominate northern MI
Sunday. As lake temperatures remain above freezing, LES will
continues for typical snowbelt locations Sunday. At this time, snow
accumulations remain below a couple inches for Sunday. Temperatures
remain near to slightly below normal with breezy northwest winds
that will start to turn north late Sunday.
Winds continue north early Monday as weak upper ridging approaches
from the north. A brief break in LES is possible Monday, however an
extremely positively tilted upper low races down CAN Tuesday and
brings Arctic air over the Great Lakes region (850mb temps ~ -20C).
LES snow showers will start to ramp up sometime mid week due to this
(likely early Wednesday). Near the surface, winds will be breezy to
gusty with temperatures possibly dropping into the single digits for
overnight lows mid week into the late week. Low chances at this time
for overnight low temperatures to drop below zero (as some guidance
suggests) due to lower level clouds persisting and the surface high
weakening as it moves over the Great Lakes region. This surge of
colder air could be what starts some of the ice cover as some Lk
surface temperatures are in the mid to low 30s near the straights
today.
