.SYNOPSIS...
A winter storm will impact the region through this weekend with
snow transitioning to a wintry mix including freezing rain.
While valley areas become plain rain by Sunday afternoon, hill
towns and higher terrain areas will likely remain a wintry mix.
As the system exits the region Sunday night, winds will become
strong with colder temperatures and another round of lake effect
snow for early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...
Key Messages:

- Complex storm system will bring snow transitioning to a wintry
  mix through Sunday with some areas changing over to plain rain
  before ending early Sunday evening.

- Snow amounts will be variable based on location though many
  areas could receive between one tenth and three tenths of an
  inch of flat ice.

Update as of 1230 AM EST...Winter storm continues to impact the
region early this morning. Most are currently seeing snow, with
the heaviest activity being observed across the Taconics into
the Berkshires and Litchfield County. This area is right at the
nose of a 50-60 kt LLJ positioned from south to north just off
the coast of New Jersey, which is focusing low- level
convergence in this area. Some freezing rain and sleet have been
observed mixing in mainly across Dutchess County where temps
aloft are closer to freezing. Off to the west, reflectivity
decreases quite a bit where vertical lift is substantially
lower. This will not last long, as stronger lift associated with
the 925-700 hPa warm front lifts north into the region later
tonight. This will bring back widespread precipitation, with
snow likely to begin mixing with or changing over to sleet and
freezing rain. I've adjusted snow amounts to latest trends, with
no changes made to headlines. See previous discussion below...

Previous Discussion...Winter storm is underway as snow
continues to spread across the region. Forecast soundings are
suggesting that the best lift and moisture may be under the DGZ
for much of the period of snowfall suggesting that efficient
snowfall rates may be limited. There are also some indications
of potential dry slotting moving in at times later this evening
into tonight reducing snowfall potential. This should generally
keep snowfall rates to around one half of an inch per hour or
less for most of the evening and overnight hours. As a result,
we have slightly reduced snowfall totals areawide. Still,
periods of snow leading to slippery travel will continue into
the overnight hours. Snow will be light in nature into this
evening, then become a wetter snow by daybreak Sunday,
especially close to the time of sleet transition.

A warm nose will lift northward across the region overnight into
Sunday morning. With cold air locked in at the surface,
precipitation will transition to a wintry mix including sleet
and freezing rain from south to north. This should occur before
daybreak in southern areas, around the I-90 corridor around
daybreak and areas north of I-90 later Sunday morning. Snow and
sleet look to hang on the longest across portions of the
Adirondacks before changing over to freezing rain later Sunday
afternoon. Throughout the day Sunday, temperatures will
continue to slowly rise and in some valley areas (especially
south of Albany and outside of the higher terrain),
precipitation may change over to plain rain by Sunday afternoon.
Within the mid-Hudson Valley, some weak instability may develop
which could lead to some pockets of steadier rain and maybe even
a rumble of thunder. Elsewhere, precipitation looks to remain
a wintry mix. High temperatures by late Sunday afternoon look
to range from the upper 20s across the Adirondacks and southern
Greens to the low to mid-30s elsewhere.

Latest storm total snow and sleet accumulations range from 2 to
6 in most areas with 6 to 10 inches across portions of the
Adirondacks, Upper Hudson Valley and into southern Vermont. Flat
ice accumulations between one tenth and three tenths of an inch
are possible for most areas. Gusty winds within the Mohawk
Valley, southern Vermont and the Berkshires on Sunday could
increase ice accretion on trees.

The combination of snow, sleet and ice has resulted in some
minor updates to winter weather hazards. A Winter Storm Warning
is now in effect for most of the area except for the Hudson
Valley from Albany and points south, the central and southern
Taconics and Litchfield County, which remain in a Winter Weather
Advisory.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Key Messages:

- Strong winds are expected to begin Sunday evening and continue
  through Monday with gusts up to 60 mph possible in some areas.

- Lake effect snow will develop Sunday night and continue
  through early next week with locally heavy amounts possible
  especially for the western Mohawk Valley.

Discussion:

The cold front associated with our winter storm will cross the
region Sunday evening which will result in temperatures quickly
falling below freezing as strong cold air advection takes shape.
This could lead to any untreated or wet roads to become icy. In
addition, a strong pressure gradient will be in place due to the
storm rapidly strengthening with forecast soundings suggesting
the potential for 40-50 kt winds about 1000-2000 ft above the
surface with winds at the top of the boundary layer in excess of
60 kt at times. Momentum transfer could result in wind gusts
exceeding 50 mph Sunday night through Monday with some gusts
potentially reaching 60 mph. There remains some uncertainty as
to how widespread the 55+ mph wind gusts will be (High Wind
Warning criteria is 58 mph or greater). As a result, will hold
onto the High Wind Watch at this time. Most if not most areas
would at least need a Wind Advisory issued for this period.
These strong winds along with the weight of snow and ice on
trees could result in downed trees and power lines resulting in
power outages.

As cold air moves over the open waters of the Great Lakes, some
wrap around snow showers will return for Sunday night with a
lake-effect snow band redeveloping by Monday morning generally
tracking down the Mohawk Valley with fragments even extending
into the Capital District and Berkshires. Upslope snow showers
will be occurring across southern Vermont. There may be some
minor fluctuations with the band location but the heaviest
snowfall looks to occur across southern Herkimer County
including into the southern foothills of the Adirondacks. As a
result, a Winter Storm Watch for lake-effect snow is in effect
from Sunday night through Tuesday night for the potential of 7
or more inches of snow. Light to locally moderate snow
accumulations will even be possible across portions of the
Hudson Valley into western New England where the band extends.
The strong winds, especially on Monday, could lead to near
blizzard conditions at times, especially across Herkimer County.

High temperature on Monday will only reach the teens and 20s
with lows Monday night in the single digits except lower teens
across portions of the Hudson Valley and below zero across the
Adirondacks.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Key Messages:

- Lake Effect Snow for the western Mohawk Valley continues
  through Tuesday.

- Bitter cold temperatures Tuesday through Thursday. Additional
  cold weather advisories for the high terrain likely Tuesday
  night as there is 40 to 60 percent chance for valley areas and
  greater than 75% confidence for the southern Adirondacks and
  southern Vermont to fall below five degrees.

- Watching a potential coastal storm for Wednesday night into
  Thursday which may bring moderate to heavy snow to the region,
  depending on the storm track. There is a 20-40 percent chance
  for greater than 4 inches of snow for areas mainly from I-90
  southward.

Discussion:

Our stretch of well below normal temperatures continues Tuesday
through Thursday with increasing confidence that cold weather
advisories will be needed Tuesday night, especially in higher
terrain. With persistent strong westerly flow aloft supporting a
long fetch down Lake Ontario, lake effect snow will likely
continue through the day Tuesday extending well into the Mohawk
Valley. Areas further east including the Capital District cannot
be ruled out depending on the multi-lake connection and exact
inland extent. Also depending on the residence time, lake effect
snow headlines may need to be extended into Tuesday as well.
Otherwise, breezy and cold with temperatures through the region
struggling to rise out of the teens and low 20s. With breezy
winds continuing, it will feel even colder more like single
digits and negative single digits. We turn very cold Tuesday
night with lake effect snow finally weakening as high pressure
builds inland and subsidence inversion lowers. Very cold
temperatures Tuesday night with lows falling into the single
digits and sub-zero for higher terrain areas throughout the
region. Cold and dry for Wednesday as high pressure moves
overhead.

We continue to monitor a potential coastal storm/nor'easter for
Wed night into Thursday. Latest deterministic and ensemble
trends have shifted the storm track slightly more off shore
which would mean less impacts for eastern NY and western New
England. Current guidance suggests a sfc low develops near the
Gulf Coast states with a southern stream shortwave tracking over
the TN Valley which will help steer the coastal low up the East
Coast as it rapidly deepens into a classic miller-a type
nor'easter. However, the amplitude of the southern stream
shortwave looks a bit flat which would limit just how far north
the coastal low may track before exiting out to sea. Should the
current track hold, it would escape out to sea off the mid-
Atlantic coast, only grazing our zones mainly south of I-90.
Latest probabilistic guidance highlights these zones with 20 -
40% chance for 4"+ of snow with less northward. Will continue to
monitor trends and provide updates in future discussions.

.AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Through 06z Monday...Widespread IFR conditions in place with
occasional MVFR expected through the rest of the night, as
precipitation continues to become lighter/intermittent until
09z-11z when precip becomes steadier again. In terms of precip
types, snow initially at KALB/KGFL/KPSF will gradually
transition to sleet then freezing rain from south to north
through the morning hours. FZRA initially at KPOU will change to
plain rain by late this morning and KALB by early afternoon.
FZRA could linger at KGFL/KPSF through much of the day.
Prevailing IFR conditions expected through around 00z Monday,
then improving to VFR as low pressure exits into New England.

Will mention low level wind shear at KPSF during much of the morning
hours, as a southeast low level jet around 40 kt at 2000 ft AGL will
move across the area. Winds aloft do not look to be as strong at the
rest of the TAF sites, but will monitor trends. Surface winds will
be east-northeast around 10 kt with occasional gusts of 15-20 kt
through today. Winds will shift to the west and increase to 10-20 kt
with gusts of 20-35 kt developing after 00z Monday.
