.SYNOPSIS...
A wintry mix overspreads the region overnight including
snow, sleet, and freezing rain before temperatures warm enough to
transition the mix to light rain showers for most late tomorrow
morning into the afternoon. Gusty winds will occur across the area
late tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow night behind the cold front.
As colder air funnels eastward, lake effect snow will impact the
western Mohawk Valley tomorrow evening through Friday before another
storm impacts the region with initial snow transitioning to a wintry
mix Saturday into Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
Key Message:

- Slippery travel conditions overnight due to wintry mix
  including a glaze of ice from freezing rain for all of eastern
  NY and western New England. Winter Weather Advisories run
  until 1 pm Thursday.

- Gusty winds reaching 40 to 50 mph in western New England and
  the central and northern Taconics tonight into early Thursday
  can result in downed tree limbs and isolated power outages.
  Wind Advisory in effect until 10 AM Thursday.

As of 1245 AM EST...Surface low is located over the Ohio Valley
and is headed towards the eastern Great Lakes for the late
overnight hours. Ahead of this system, warm advection has led to
a period of intermittent light snow for the evening hours. With
this initial surge of precip mostly through the area, most of
the region is in a lull, although some upslope light snow is
still going over the central Adirondacks. Most areas have
already seen a quick coating of snow.

Over the next few hours, any precip will be fairly light and
spotty. Strong east-southeast winds aloft will be allowing for a
lot of downsloping off the terrain of western New England, so
precip will be fairly spotty and mainly limited to the higher
terrain areas, with little occurring in valley areas through
about 4 AM or so. Afterward, 3km HRRR suggest enough lift should
occur with primary low passing to the west over the eastern
Great Lakes that some additional light precip will be moving
from southwest to northeast through the area. However, with
warming temps aloft, most of this precip will be starting to
transition over to a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain,
especially for areas south of the Adirondacks and southern
Greens.

Snow amounts will be mainly a coating to an inch or
two in the valleys with 1-3" east of the southern Greens and
2-4" over the higher terrain with some upslope off the eastern
Adirondacks and eastern Catskills. Any ice accretion through
daybreak will generally be just a light glaze or so.

The Wind Advisory began at 10 pm for the southern Greens of
Bennington and western Windham Counties, the northern-central
Taconics and Berkshires with southeast winds 15-25 mph with some
gusts 40-50 mph as the low-level jet increases.

Lows will be in the teens and 20s and rising into the 20s and
lower 30s (near the Taconics based on the NYS Mesonet).

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Key Messages:

 - Lake Effect Snow band extends into the western Mohawk Valley
   tomorrow evening into tomorrow night resulting in 3 to 7
   inches of snow. Gusty winds will also result in blowing and
   drifting snow. A Winter Weather Advisory will go into effect
   for southern Herkimer County from 7PM tomorrow evening
   through 7PM Friday.

- Westerly winds turn strong late tomorrow afternoon into
  tomorrow night with wind gusts reaching up to 40 to 45kts
  across most of eastern New York and western New England.

Discussion:

The warm nose will continue pushing northward tomorrow morning
allowing temperatures to trend upwards resulting in wintry mix
(mainly freezing rain) transitioning to plain rain showers.
Even as temperatures rise a few degrees above freezing, slippery
conditions may linger into the Thursday morning commute given
chilly antecedent conditions. But once temperatures rise into
the mid-30s, the icing threat should come to an end. The
southern Adirondacks and southern Greens hang onto the wintry
mix until mid to late morning as the cold air lingers in these
area the longest. All areas should rise above freezing by late
morning/midday with showers winding down by then as well.
Temperatures turn quite mild tomorrow rising into the upper 30s
to mid 40s as the warm sector overspreads the region.

The system's cold front tracks through the area from west to
east late tomorrow afternoon into early evening with winds
abruptly shifting to the west and quickly turning
strong/gusty. In fact, given that our secondary coastal low
will be rapidly intensifying as it heads into Atlantic Canada
while a sfc high building into the Ohio Valley strengthens
towards 1040 hPa, guidance is in good agreement for westerly
winds to become quite strong. With pressure rises from 00 to 6
UTC Fri expected to rise 10 to 12 hPa with dry air intruding
behind the cold front, there is a strong signal for effective
momentum transfer within the boundary layer supporting strong
gusty winds reaching up to 30 to 50 kts. Probabilistic guidance
shows 30 to 50% chances for wind gusts to exceed 40kts with
forecast soundings showing a window from 21 UTC Thurs to 03 UTC
Fri immediately behind the front for wind gusts to reach 40
to 45kts. The strong, gusty winds continue overnight Thursday
night although likely not quite as strong as late Thurs
P.M/eve. We are messaging this strong wind potential that can
result in downed tree limbs and isolated power outages in our
HWO. Wind Advisories will likely be needed.

Besides the strong winds, a strong surge of cold air advection
ensues behind the cold front Thursday evening with a multiple
lake connection developing off the Georgian Bay and Lake
Ontario. Guidance is in good agreement showing a single lake
effect band developing and extending off Lake Ontario into the
western Mohawk Valley. While confidence is high that this band
develops, its residence time in southern Herkimer County looks
limited as westerly winds veer to the northwest overnight
Thursday. The period from 00 to 06 UTC Fri should feature the
greatest impacts from the lake effect band with snowfall rates
up to 1 inch per hour at times and strong westerly winds
supportingly blowing/drifting snow that can reduce visibility.
The band could looks to extend further eastward into the Mohawk
Valley and even into the Capital District with a quick coating
to 2 inches of snow. By 06 - 09 UTC Fri, the band should shift
southward but could still impact the "saw tooth" of southern
Herkimer County overnight. The band continues through Friday
morning but should finally lift northward and weaken Friday
afternoon as winds back to the west and eventually southwest.
Overall, expecting 3 to 6 inches of light/fluffy lake effect
snow in southern Herkimer and we changed the winter storm watch
to a winter weather advisory which will go into effect 7 PM
Thurs and continue through 7 PM Fri.

We stay breezy and chilly into Friday as high pressure continues
to build from the Ohio Valley northeastward. Temperatures
struggle to rise out of the 20s and with breezy winds 20-25kts
continuing, it will feel even colder more like single digits and
teens. Friday night winds finally weaken and with partially
clearing, it will turn quite cold. Expecting overnight lows in
the single digits to mid teens.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Key Messages:

- Another potentially high-impact storm system is expected to bring
widespread precipitation, including snow, a wintry mix, and/or rain,
to the entire region Saturday and Sunday.

- Confidence in precipitation types, amounts and the timing of the
transition from snow to a mix or rain remains low.

- A period of very cold and windy weather with lake effect snow is
possible behind the departing storm system Monday through Tuesday.

Discussion:

The next winter system in the active stretch impacts the region this
upcoming weekend.  High pressure will be over southern Quebec, as
low pressure organizes over Missouri and the Lower MS River Valley
on Saturday.  A northern stream disturbance will be moving across
the northern Plains and south-central Canada with the southern
stream strong short-wave ejecting out of the southern Plains. Some
phasing is shown on the ensembles and medium range range guidance,
as one strong sfc cyclone over the Ohio Valley by Sunday morning
moving towards the Northeast. Clouds thicken and lower quickly on
Saturday with snow breaking out by the late morning into the
afternoon across the entire region.  The isentropic lift rapidly
increases ahead of the warm front to the system. Mid and upper level
jet support will be in place, as the right entrance region of the
poleward jet streak is over the region. Light to moderate snowfall
amounts are possible Sat pm-Sat night. The latest probabilities from
the NBM for 4 inches of more of snow are over the northern zones the
southern Adirondacks, Lake George Saratoga Region and southern VT.
Slightly lesser amounts to the south.  The pcpn begins to transition
to a wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain, rain especially south of
the I-90 corridor by Sunday morning. Temps will be rising overnight.
High Saturday will be in the 20s to lower 30s with a few teens over
the southern Dacks and southern Greens.  Low will be in the teens
and 20s and then will steady or slowly from mins in the teens and
20s. The lows will be due to wet bulb cooling.

Ice amounts are tricky Sunday morning, as it will depend on how much
cold air is trapped at the sfc.  The warm front does appear to break
through a portion of the forecast area.  Some icing amounts of a
tenth of an inch or more are in the forecast from the latest NBM
guidance.  The ensembles mean track is west of the region, as it
moves through the Ohio Valley and could deepen to around a 985 hPa
low, as windy conditions will become an issue Sunday into Sunday
night. The mixed pcpn will likely transition to rain from
approximately the Mohawk Valley, Capital Region, southern VT south
and east briefly before changing back snow from west to east across
the forecast area Sunday night. The NBM QPF probabilities are 50-80%
for greater than an inch of QPF from 00Z SUN to 00Z MON from the
Capital District, southern and eastern Catskills south and east. The
system is expected to produce moderate to heaviest QPF.  Winter
Weather head lines will likely be needed this weekend.  Temps rise
in the upper 30s to lower 40s in the valleys from the Mohawk Valley,
Capital Region and Berkshires south with upper 20s to mid 30s to the
north and over the higher terrain.  The cold front moves through
Sunday night with the occluding stacked low over the Gulf of St
Lawrence. Some additional light snow accums are possible with the
deformation and wrap around snowfall with lows falling back into the
single digits and teens.

Cyclonic flow sets up over the region to open the week with arctic
air over spreading the region.  Westerly upslope and lake effect
snow showers are possible.  Temps will be well below normal on
Monday with highs in the teens and 20s with single digits in the
valley.  H850 temps fall to -20C to -25C aloft over the region.  It
will be blustery and temps Monday night fall zero to 10 below zero
north of the I-90 corridor and single digits to the south.  The
combination of the wind and cold temps will yield wind chills in the
10 to 20 below zero range over portions of the forecast area.  Cold
Weather Advisories may be needed Monday night into Tuesday. The cold
persists into Tuesday with below normal temps continuing. Additional
Cold Weather headline may be needed into Tuesday night and
Wednesday.  High pressure builds in Tue night into Wed which will
allow the winds to diminish but still below normal temps.  The next
system may bring some light snow late Wed pm into Wed night.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Through 06z Friday...Challenging forecast for the terminals for this
TAF period with a complex system moving across the region.
Conditions at this time range from MVFR to IFR in snow showers,
which will continue over the next several hours. As temperatures
aloft and at the surface gradually warm, snow will mix with/change
over to sleet, freezing rain or rain. Times for these transitions
have been updated in this TAF per latest CAMs, with conditions
expected to range from MVFR to as a low as LIFR (primarily at
KGFL/KALB where guidance shows heaver precipitation and lower
ceilings at times through the morning). The system and associated
precipitation will exit the region late in the day Thursday, with
conditions trending back to VFR towards the end of the TAF period.

Light winds initially will gradually increase through the night
through mid-Thursday morning, especially at KPSF where gusts around
20-30 kts are expected. Elsewhere, it will become breezy by Thursday
afternoon as a cold front progresses through the region behind the
departing system. Winds will veer to the west-northwest, with gusts
generally in the 20-30 kt range. KPSF may see higher gusts around 35-
40 kts, especially during the evening. LLWS has also been maintained
at terminals for this TAF due to a 40-50 kt LLJ in place across the
region ahead of the frontal passage.
