.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will track through the region tonight,
bringing lake effect and upslope snow, cooling temperatures, and
gusty to strong winds through tomorrow. A brief period of regionwide
dry conditions can be expected during the day Saturday before
another storm system brings widespread moderate to heavy snowfall to
the region Saturday night through Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Key Messages:

 - A storm system will track northward across the region with
   snow this morning changing to a wintry mix this afternoon
   before tapering off this evening

 - Snow showers and possible squalls will accompany a cold
   front passage later tonight especially for areas north and
   west of Albany.

.UPDATE...As of 1 PM EST...Our mixed precipitation event is
beginning to wind down as much drier air continues to be
entrained into the region. That said, showery precipitation is
still ongoing throughout mainly the Upper Hudson Valley,
Southern Vermont, and portions of the Mid-Hudson Valley and
northern Berkshires primarily in the form of sleet and freezing
drizzle as was expected from the previous forecast. As such, few
changes were needed other than minor adjustments to reflect
latest obs. Additional details follow in the previous discussion
below.

Previous Discussion:
A mixed precipitation event is soon to start as precipitation
approaches from the south. The column is plenty cold to start
allowing precipitation to start out as snow. Precipitation onset
time remains between 6-10am from south to north. Expect a 2-4
hour period of snow for most places where bursts of moderate to
heavy snowfall will be possible due in part to strong FGEN along
the leading edge of precipitation. Snowfall rates could reach or
exceed one inch per hour at times this morning, especially for
areas along and north of I-90, based on the latest SPC HREF. A
warm nose aloft will gradually cause precipitation to
transition to sleet and freezing rain later this morning through
the afternoon hours. As drier air aloft moves in, a loss of ice
in the cloud should eventually cause precipitation to become
more drizzle or freezing drizzle pending surface temperatures as
forecast soundings maintain a rather saturated low-level
environment. Most of the precipitation will taper off by this
evening but may linger a little longer across portions of the
Adirondacks, upper Hudson Valley and southern Greens.

Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for all of eastern
New York and western New England until 6 PM. Snowfall totals
remain similar to the last few forecast cycles with 1 to 3
inches along and south of I-90 and 2 to 4 inches farther north
along with a light glaze of ice.

Temperatures will gradually rise throughout the day reaching the
lower to mid-30s in many areas except mid to upper 20s across
portions of the Adirondacks, Upper Hudson Valley, southern
Vermont and Berkshires.

Later tonight, a cold front will track eastward across the
region. As temperatures cool aloft, lake-enhanced snow showers
will develop within the vicinity of the front and move across
areas north and west of Albany. Steepening low level lapse rates
could result in some localized squalls as well. There is some
uncertainty if these squalls will make it into the Capital
Region or dissipate prior. If they do reach the Capital Region,
it may occur right around the time of the Friday morning
commute. Wind will also begin to pick up later in the night with
a few gusts between 25 and 35 mph. Lows fall back into the
teens and 20s except around 30 across the mid- Hudson Valley and
southern Litchfield County.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Key Messages:

 - Windy conditions are expected on Friday with gusts
   potentially reaching 45 mph in spots.

 - Lake effect snow showers will set up mainly across the
   western Mohawk Valley with additional light to moderate
   accumulations.

Discussion:

A cold front will complete its passage across the region early
on Friday with a few additional snow showers along the front.
Developing west-northwesterly flow will result in a band of
lake effect snow focused across the far southern portions of
the Adirondacks into the western Mohawk Valley even extending
down to the NY Thruway at times. Fragments of this band will
likely extend down the Mohawk Valley into the Capital District
with some snow showers and flurries at times in these areas.
Upslope snow showers will also occur across the Adirondacks and
into the northern and central Taconics into southern Vermont and
the Berkshires. An additional 2 to 5 inches of snow is possible
across southern Herkimer County (where a winter weather advisory
may be needed) and 1 to 3 inches across upslope areas.
Elsewhere, just an additional coating to locally 1 inch is
expected.

Windy conditions are expected on Friday after the passage of the
front with forecast soundings suggesting 40 to 50 kt of wind at
the top of the boundary layer. Surface gusts could equate to 35
to 45 mph. Will monitor trends for the potential for a wind
advisory for parts of the area.

Despite some breaks of sun, a cold air advection regime will
prevent temperatures from rising much on Friday only reaching
the 20s to around 30 except lower to mid-30s across the mid-
Hudson Valley and southern Litchfield County. Lake effect and
upslope snow showers continue through Friday night with lows
falling back into the teens with some single digits across the
higher elevations.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Key Message:

 - High confidence for widespread plowable (>4") snowfall
   Saturday night through Sunday morning (70-90%), with
   increasing potential for greater than 7"(50-70%) within
   portions of the I-90 corridor and points slightly north.

 - Increasing chances for another plowable (>4") snowfall for
   Tuesday night into Wednesday, with greatest chances (30-40%)
   south of I-90.

Discussion:

Parade of fast but fairly moisture-laden systems continues
through the long term, with first system impacting the region
Saturday night through Sunday morning. Guidance has trended
slightly colder/south with overall storm track, with quicker
redevelopment of surface low south of Long Island. This favors
mainly snow across the region, with perhaps some mixing with
sleet closer to I-84. Mid level system remains open, however
strong isentropic lift should allow for a quick period of
moderate to heavy snowfall across the region. Latest NBM 24-hour
probs (ending 00Z/Mon) for >7" are 60-80% close to I-90, with
widespread 70-90% probs for >4". So, confidence continues to
increase for moderate/heavy snowfall with significant impacts
across the region for Saturday night-Sunday morning.

Snow should taper off to snow showers Sunday afternoon and
night. A brief period of dry weather Monday through Tuesday
morning, then increasing chances for snow late Tuesday into
Wednesday with yet another disturbance sliding south of the
region. Highest 24-hour NBM probabilities for >4" snowfall
ending 7 AM Wednesday are south of I- 90 (30-40%), and less
(10-20%) near and north of I-90.

Below normal temperatures are expected through the long term,
with highs mainly in the mid 20s to lower 30s, warmest across
the mid Hudson Valley. Overnight lows mainly in the single
digits and teens, though could be considerably colder (as low as
5 to 10 below zero) across any areas where clear skies develop
Sunday or Monday night.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Through 18Z Friday...Spotty wintry mixed precipitation continues to
impact KGFL/KALB/KPOU/KPSF early this afternoon with widespread
IFR/MVFR conditions.  KGFL has a mixture of snow and sleet which
should transition to spotty freezing rain or drizzle by 20Z/THU.
KALB/KPSF/KPOU continues with IFR/MVFR vsbys and mixed IFR/low MVFR
cigs with light freezing rain/freezing drizzle.  TEMPO groups were
used for lower instances to IFR cigs.  Temps will slowly climb
towards the freezing mark at KALB/KPOU/KPSF between 20Z/Thu to
00Z/Fri. Cigs/vsbys will still hover in the IFR/MVFR range in the
deeper moisture at the TAF sites until 00Z-04Z/FRI when cigs/vsbys
will rise to MVFR/VFR levels with the winds increasing from the
southwest to west.

Expect VFR conditions to return with cigs 3.5-5 kft AGL  prior to
09Z/FRI with the initial cold front moving through.  Some lingering
MVFR cigs at KPSF, as some snow showers may impact KALB-KPSF north
to KGFL where a better chance with a PROB30 was used at KGFL. Expect
widespread VFR the rest of the TAF cycle with windy conditions.

The winds will be variable in direction at 5 KT or less at KGFL/KPOU
and south to southeast at KALB-KPSF at 5-12 KT with some gusts
around 20 KT at KPSF. The winds will increase from the southwest at
7-12 KT early tonight with gusts close to 20 KT.  The winds will
strengthen to 15-20 KT 09Z-13Z/FRI with gusts 25-33 KT for late Fri
morning into the afternoon.

LLWS was kept in the KGFL/KPSF prior to 20Z/THU, as the sfc winds
are less than 5 KT still with the 2 kft AGL winds 35-40 KT.

   Winter Weather Advisory.

A few snow showers and localized squalls may accompany a cold frontal
passage late tonight into early Friday morning especially for areas
north and west of Albany.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday.

Windy conditions are expected on Friday with a few gusts to 45 mph
possible. If confidence increases on these gusts, a wind advisory may
be needed.

In addition, lake effect snow showers will develop on Friday with
additional moderate accumulations possible for the southern
Adirondacks and western Mohawk Valley.

Another storm system is expected to bring widespread moderate to
locally heavy snowfall Saturday night into Sunday.

Another system may bring widespread snowfall Tuesday night into
Wednesday.
