AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Wakefield VA
733 PM EDT Wed Jul 23 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
Seasonable temperatures and humidity will continue trough
tonight. The respite from summertime heat and humidity will end
quickly on Thursday though, with temperatures again on the rise
late this week into the weekend. Rain chances also return by
this weekend into early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 240 PM EDT Wednesday...

Key Messages:

-Dry and seasonable conditions continue through tonight and
tomorrow.

Afternoon weather analysis shows an upper level ridge building over
much of the eastern US and stretching up into eastern Canada. At the
surface, high pressure has begun to shift offshore. Skies
remain partly cloudy with fair weather cumulus clouds developing
across the entire CWA. Temperatures as of 2pm are in the lower
to middle 80s. With the stationary front to our south, dew
points have been lower than previous days allowing today to be a
pleasant summer day. Later this afternoon and into tonight,
cloud cover will continue to decrease as day time heating is
lost. Temperatures will be near or slightly below seasonable
with lows in the middle to upper 60s inland and lower 70s along
the coast. By tomorrow, the upper ridge will be centered over
the area. While at the surface, the high pressure will be off
shore helping to bring back a warm and moist airmass.
Temperatures tomorrow will be slightly higher than the previous
day with highs in the middle to upper 80s and low 90s in some
isolated locations. Dew points will also begin to bounce back
into the upper 60s and lower 70s. This will allow Heat Index
values to be in the lower to middle 90s. Despite the heat slowly
making a return the overall weather conditions will remain dry.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 240 PM EDT Wednesday...

Key Message:

- Temperatures and humidity levels will continue to rise
  through the weekend.

- Chances of showers and thunderstorms return for the weekend.

By the start of the weekend the upper ridge will be in place over
the area with multiple shortwaves moving across the ridge axis. At
the surface, high pressure will have settled in across the SE coast
continuing to advect a hot and humid airmass across the area. Friday
temperatures will begin to reach into the lower to middle 90s across
the CWA. Dew points will also increase into the lower 70s inland and
middle 70s along the coast. This will be the first day where Heat
index values will be between 100 and 105. As the forecast stand,
these values are just shy of any heat products. Saturday there
is the possibility of shortwave moving just north of the area.
While at the surface, a weak cold front will be pushing south
and possibly stalling just north of the area. South of the front
temperatures will rise into the middle 90s and heat index
values could potentially be between 105 and 107. Will note that
Saturday looks to be the best day for potential Heat products.
In addition to the heat on Saturday, the chances of showers and
thunderstorms do increase with the the front moving south and
the shortwave moving just north of the area. At this time only
15 to 25% chance of showers and thunderstorms remain in the
forecast.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 240 PM EDT Wednesday...

Key Message:

-Hot and Humid airmass will continue through the end of the weekend
and into next week.

Latest ensemble guidance continue to show a 594dam ridge over
much of the eastern half of the US Sunday before shifting the
ridge axis to the west. While at the surface, high pressure will
continue to be off the SE coast on Sunday, before a new high
pressure forms somewhere across the central US under the ridge
axis. Sunday will remain hot and humid with heat index values
again reaching near Heat Advisory criteria. There will also be
another chance of showers and storms on Sunday as a weak frontal
boundary slowly moves south. By Monday the ridge axis will move
over the central US. This will allow for NW flow aloft to be
over the area. With the low aloft we will need to keep an eye on
upstream convection.

&&

.AVIATION /00Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 730 PM EDT Tuesday...

VFR conditions across area terminals are expected to prevail
through the 00z TAF period. Mainly SKC tonight-Thu AM. Winds
become light/variable at RIC/SBY with E-NE winds of 5-10 kt
through the night at ORF/PHF/ECG. Could see patchy ground fog
between 06-12z at RIC/SBY...but confidence in this is low and
only brief flight restrictions are expected at most. Winds
become SE at 5-10 kt on Thu with SCT aftn cumulus (3000-5000 ft
AGL).

Outlook: Mainly dry/VFR conditions persist through Friday, but
there could be isolated/patchy ground fog and/or low stratus
with localized flight restrictions Friday morning. Rain chances
return to the forecast in the form of isolated to scattered
aftn/evening tstms, beginning Saturday and continuing into
early next week.

&&

.MARINE...
As of 311 PM EDT Wednesday...

Key Messages:

- A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for the southern
coastal waters through late this evening due to 4-5 ft seas.

- There is a High risk of rip currents tomorrow across the
  southern beaches.

- Generally benign marine conditions are expected tonight into early
  next week.

Surface analysis highlights high pressure located just off the
Northeast coast and a stationary front draped just off the Carolina
coast. The gradient between the front/weak surface low along it and
the high to our NE has led to elevated easterly winds, especially in
the NC coastal waters. Winds decrease in speed farther north as the
gradient lessens. This elevated onshore flow has resulted in seas
building to 4 to 5 ft (with occasional 6 ft seas possible) from Cape
Charles Light through Currituck Beach Light, so have extended the
Small Craft Advisory through late this evening as elevated seas will
take a little while to subside. As the high shifts further offshore
and low weakens further tonight, the gradient will relax and winds
will decrease. Winds of around 10 kts or less are forecast Thursday
through early next week, with possibly a few diurnally driven wind
surges to 10-15 kts. Seas will start to subside this evening through
the end of the week as winds become westerly then to the north by
the weekend. Sub-SCA winds and seas are expected thereafter through
the extended forecast period. Seas subside to 2-3 ft Thursday into
early next week. Waves of 1-2 ft continue across most of the
Chesapeake Bay with 2-3 ft waves across the lower Ches Bay lingering
today.

Given the continuation of elevated seas and shore normal flow
tomorrow, have decided to upgrade to High rip current risk across
the S beaches with a Moderate rip current risk across the N beaches
(where seas are about a foot lower). Winds and seas should both be
lower tomorrow, but the period will be 7-8 seconds and with the time
of low time around the early afternoon hours, the rip current risk
still remains. Friday through the weekend, winds will become
offshore and seas will drop considerably, leading to a Low rip
current risk through the weekend.
