Minor changes to ongoing forecast this morning, adjusted overland
winds across the area to around 10 to 15mph with tightening
gradient from approaching system through the afternoon, with
isolated gusts up to 25mph. Otherwise, forecast remains on track
as approaching front pushes into the eastern Gulf, moving into the
Gulf coast communities by Friday afternoon. High temperatures
should reach into the 60s to low 70s area-wide before rain moves
in later this evening.

.SHORT TERM...
A broad 500 mb low straddling the Aleutians and associated
surface inflection advected a deep shortwave trough towards the
northern panhandle overnight. Located below the right entrance of
a jet streak, the shortwave enhances a gale force occluded front
associated with the decaying surface low in the western gulf. This
front reaches the eastern gulf waters Thursday morning, bringing
easterly gale force sustained winds with severe gale force gusts
to the northern gulf waters.
Overnight clearing and cooling surface temps has resulted in a
marine layer pushing into outer coastal communities and down Icy
Strait Thursday morning. This will rise through the morning as a
high cloud deck moves in preceding the front. Precipitation will
reach the northern outer coast this afternoon, spreading to the
rest of the northern panhandle through the evening. Winds will
increase as the front pushes overhead, staying elevated overnight
in N/S facing channels. The southern panhandle won't see rain
until early Friday morning, though accumulations will remain
light. Winds will decrease through Friday, but precip is expected
to linger for the northern panhandle until the next system pushes
in early Saturday morning. Thursday accumulations will vary with
location, with Yakutat expected to receive around an inch of rain
in 24 hours while other northern areas see around a half an inch.
Lingering Friday precip will bring totals up to nearly 2 inches in
Yakutat, with other locations seeing up to an inch. Highs will be
in the 60s with lows in the mid 50s.
.LONG TERM...

Saturday through the weekend.
- Expect times of moderate to heavy rain during the weekend,
mainly over the central and southern panhandle.
- Winds will increase along the coast and inner channels as the
low moves into the panhandle.
Details: To start the weekend, on Friday, a front will continue
to bring light to moderate precipitation across the panhandle.
This rain will continue into Saturday before a stronger low makes
its way across the gulf. The stronger low will reach the panhandle
Saturday bringing moderate to heavy rain for many areas, but
mainly focused on central and southern areas. Over a 24 hour time
span, there is a 60% chance of the central to southern panhandle
receiving 1.5 inches of rain. Some locations could see up to 2 to
2.5 inches. Currently, IVT values are reaching greater than 750
kg/m*s for over 48 hours. This event will be more about the
duration of the precipitation rather than the amount. Confidence
has slightly increased on the area of greatest precipitation due
to guidance showing ensembles slowly coming into agreement. The
limiting factor continues to be the lack of forcing that help to
bring the heaviest precipitation.
As the low reaches the gulf, winds will increase along the coast
and inner channels. The strongest winds along the gulf will occur
Saturday late morning to afternoon. Southeast winds will build to
strong breezes of 25 to 30 kts on Saturday. For the inner
channels, winds are expected to reach moderate to strong breezes
up to 25 kts Saturday afternoon into evening as the low pushes
into the panhandle increasing the pressure gradient.

.AVIATION.../18z Aviation Discussion/...
Main aviation concern through the period will be decreasing
flight conditions through Thursday night as system approaches with
MVFR flight conditions, elevated winds, and minor LLWS expected.
Predominate MVFR flight conditions across the panhandle this
morning with CIGS AoB 2500ft. Lone outlier is VFR conditions at
PAJN under a BKN to SCT Deck around 5 to 7k ft. Not expecting too
much improvement through the afternoon as a front in the eastern
Gulf of Alaska moves onshore, brief improvements possible through
the early afternoon with CIGs AoB 5000ft, before deteriorating
back to predominate MVFR flight conditions with rainfall at
Yakutat by 00z, overspreading eastward across the rest of the
panhandle TAF sites through 12z Friday morning. Anticipating rain
and MVFR conditions to prevail by 15z Friday through the rest of
the TAf period.
Sustained winds should remain around 10 to 15kts through tonight,
with isolated gusts up to 25kts. Minor SE-ly LLWS approaches
Yakutat and Sitka by 06z as front approaches, around 25 to 30kts
near 2000ft.

Outside: A gale force front moves into the eastern gulf this
morning, bringing sustained easterly winds up to 40 kts and severe
gale force gusts from Cape Fairweather to Cape Suckling. The rest
of the gulf coast will see southeasterly strong breezes with near
gale force gusts, decreasing overnight into Friday. Sea state
will be dominated by southeasterly fresh seas of 11 to 15 ft,
period less than 10 seconds, with highest seas west of Cross Sound
towards Cape Suckling/St. Elias. These will decrease to 6 to 7 ft
into Friday.
Inside: A marine layer has pushed in to Icy Strait and along the
outer coast this morning, expected to dissipate as an occluded
front pushes into the eastern gulf through the day Thursday. A
southerly moderate to fresh breeze (11 to 21 kts) will build and
spread north up N/S inner channels into Friday. Isolated areas may
see strong breezes (22 to 27 knots) as precipitation pushes over.
Winds will begin to decrease early Friday morning, sticking
around slightly longer in Clarence Strait and Lynn Canal as the
pressure gradient tightens. Wave heights will reach 2 to 3 feet
with spots of 4 ft in windiest areas and channel entrances.
