Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion...UPDATED

.SHORT TERM...Clearer and drier weather for the central and
southern panhandle begins later tonight as a surface ridge settles
over the panhandle, while some lingering light showers continue over
the northern panhandle. A drier period is not expected to last long
for the northern panhandle as a low centered near the Aleutian
Islands brings a warm front into the Gulf tomorrow. This gale force
front will push into the northern coast by tomorrow night, with the
highest amount of precipitation expected to impact the area between
Yakutat and Icy Cape. Yakutat is expected to see moderate
precipitation with a 24 hour QPF of around 1 inch by the end of the
day Wednesday. The rest of the northern panhandle will see lighter
rates with this first round of precipitation, while the central and
southern panhandle are likely to stay dry throughout Wednesday
until the next front moves through.

.LONG TERM.../Thursday through Tuesday/...Gale force front
with heavy rain in store for SE AK in the mid range then a quieter
weather pattern is established. The front tracking in from the west
Wednesday will weaken early Thursday with eastern gulf winds
dropping below small craft levels. Heavy rainfall hitting the NE
Gulf coast will expand over the entire region through the day
Thursday and into Friday. Heaviest rainfall near Yakutat with
Thursday rainfall totals of around 2 inches with an inch or so for
the rest of SE AK Thursday into Friday. Some more increases to winds
as the front moves through, with E-W inner channels initially then a
strong southerly gradient with N-S channel increase as the parent
low moves over. For now in the 20 kt range but upwards of 30 kt may
be seen. Models still differ on timing details of the low weakening
to an open wave trough. It is a spit between GFS/NAM and
ECMWF/Canadian, but kept synoptic forecast mostly as is due to the
uncertainty. After this system tracks east into the weekend high
pressure ridge moves in by the start of next week. Have a drying
trend for the weekend with better chances of breaks in cloud cover.
For next week ensembles have a broad weak low in place for the
extended range with lower probability of precipitation and decrease
in winds. Operational models have larger spread depicting individual
systems tracking through.

.AVIATION...Lingering showers continue to impact the panhandle through this
afternoon creating predominantly VFR conditions. Occasional broken
ceilings dipping below 3000 ft will briefly bring some airports down
to MVFR, though clear blue skies can usually still be seen peaking
through the low scattered layers. Many areas in the panhandle are
expected to see some clear skies before the next front moves in
tomorrow. Yakutat will see the effects first with a decrease in
vis and ceilings as the precipitation begins. Elevated winds in
Skagway and Haines will calm down through the night before
picking up again with the next system moving in. The rest of the
panhandle's winds will become more light and variable as the day
goes on. Visibility remains high despite the occasional shower and
low ceilings.

.MARINE...
Gulf: Wave heights along the outer coast continuing to
subside to 5-6 feet by tomorrow morning. Heights offshore and into
the northern Gulf will increase to 13-16 ft tomorrow night into
Wednesday as a Gale force front moves into the Gulf. Gale force
winds will be expected up along the northeast Gulf coast along Icy
Cape tomorrow and near Cape Fairweather by tomorrow night.

Inner Channels: Winds in Icy Strait and along the ocean entrances
of Chatham and Clarence will continue to diminish into tonight as
a surface ridge settles over the panhandle. Winds will remain
around a moderate breeze tonight until the next front approaches
tomorrow, bringing a moderate to fresh breeze to the northern and
central inner channels, the strongest of winds moving into
Southern Chatham and Icy Strait at the ocean entrances. Northern
Lynn Canal will also see some increases in wind speed to a fresh
breeze as the front coming in strengthens the surface ridge moving
into tomorrow night. Clarence Strait will remain relatively
calmer with winds staying around a gentle breeze until the next
low level trough moves into the panhandle by Friday.
