Juneau area has pushed inland, moved past the area, & is 
weakening. Wind gusts up to around between 40 & 50 mph remain

.SHORT TERM.../Through Sunday night/ A few features of note for
the short range today. The first is the last of a series of waves
that brought the heavier rainfall to the panhandle over the last
few days. This wave is organizing as a weak low S of Cross Sound
with frontal type features extended SE down the panhandle. As of 4
am it is bringing rain (occasionally moderate in intensity) and
some gusty winds (up to 20 to 30 kt) to areas from Icy Strait
southward. This feature is not expected to last all that long with
most of its showers moving into Canada by early afternoon, but
expect up to a half inch of rainfall from it all told from Icy
Strait southward. Behind it a weak trough, currently extending
from Kenai Peninsula to Haida Gwaii, that will move into the
panhandle this afternoon and evening keeping showers persistent
everywhere into Sunday night.

Late Sunday night is where things get interesting as a gale force
low begins to move north through the eastern Gulf of Alaska. This
low is well positioned under the left exit region of a 100 kt jet
streak and will be strengthening as it moves into the gulf. It is
expected to bottom out at around 980 mb early Monday morning just
west of Baranof Island. Moderate to strong gales are expected
around the low especially on the south side and are likely to
reach far enough east to impact the outer coast with high wind
gusts to 60 mph. Like wise the associated frontal band will see
winds nearly as strong bringing the potential of high wind gusts
to 60 mph to the southern panhandle as well and gusts in the 35 to
55 mph range for the central panhandle by late Sunday night. High
wind watches remain up for the south and outer coast at this
time. Farther north the southerly push of winds will not have
reached the northern panhandle by late Sunday night, but the
orientation of the front will cause many of the northern inner
channels winds to turn northerly due to pressure gradient and may
reach 15 to 20 kt in areas like Lynn Canal on Monday.

Rain will also be the other concern with this system with moderate
to possibly heavy rain again returning to the panhandle E of Cape
Fairweather. This system will be moving through rather quickly
though so rainfall totals are expected to amount to around 1 to 3
inches through Monday afternoon. Southern panhandle will see most
of the rain Sunday night, north will see most of it on Monday.

.LONG TERM.../Monday through Thursday/...
Key Messages:

- Light to moderate showers continue across the panhandle through
  midweek

An active fall pattern will continue early next week across
southeast AK as a strong gale force system moves up along the
outer coast through the day Monday. While another plume of
moisture will be aimed just south of the panhandle, this system
will tap into it and bring a burst of heavy rain to the far
southern panhandle late Sunday night into early Monday morning
before spreading moderate rain over a majority of the panhandle.
The primary impacts from this early week system however are
expected to be from strong winds due to the already saturated
ground across the area from rain experienced through the weekend.
Therefore

Ensemble guidance continues to give up to a 60% chance of upwards
of 3 inches in 24 hours for Metlakatla and Ketchikan for this
system. For the central outer coast including Sitka, guidance
gives a 60% chance of up to 2.5 inches over 24 hrs. These 24 hour
totals are for Sunday at 4pm through Monday at 4pm, with locally
higher amounts likely in steep terrain. Contingent upon the speed
and track of this feature, the timing of heaviest rainfall is
still expected early Monday morning as of this discussion.
Moderate rain, heavy at times, will then spread over the rest of
the panhandle from south to north as the low moves northward along
the outer coast.

While there is still some model discrepancy on the track of this
system, there has been a trend for it tracking further east over the
past few model cycles, giving increased confidence in the low
pushing inland somewhere along the northeast coast in the vicinity
of Cross Sound or further south along Baranof Island. Before the
primary track deviation point, there is model agreement on strong
gale force winds for the southeast gulf and Dixon Entrance area as
the low approaches, with gusts to 50 kt possible for far southern
Clarence Strait as well as southern Chatham Strait early Monday
morning and around the low center itself as it reaches peak
intensity Monday morning. Sustained winds up to around 25 kt with
frequent gusts to gale force are expected to spread northward
through the inner channels as the gradient tightens with the low
racing up along the outer coast. Seas in the southeast gulf will
also build to upwards of 18 ft with a southerly swell becoming
southwesterly on the backside as the system moves northward
through Monday afternoon.

Once the system moves inland, there will be persistent onshore
flow with light to moderate showers across the panhandle through
midweek. Late Tuesday and into Wednesday looks like the best
chance for increased breaks between showers, particularly for the
southern panhandle. Active pattern will continue however Thursday
as another low moves into the gulf bringing more enhanced rain to
the entirety of the panhandle. Throughout the forecast period,
maximum temperatures look to remain mild between the mid 50s in
the north ranging to around 60 in the southern panhandle as cloud
cover and rain showers reign supreme.

.AVIATION.../through Monday Morning/...Conditions have been
mostly VFR to high-end MVFR around the northern half of the
panhandle Sunday morning, with MFR to IFR conditions for the
southern half due to clouds and showers being pushed into the
area from the lingering low in the eastern Gulf.

Looking ahead to Sunday afternoon, to around 00z, this low will
be tracking eastward through the panhandle. This will keep the
rain and showers in the forecast for SE AK. So mainly looking at
low end VFR to MVFR for today. There is some concern for LLWS
through the morning but as the low tracks inland and weakens, the
LLWS will fade out.

From 00z to 06z, some improvement to VFR for some TAF sites is
likely and the showers will becoming fewer in number around the
area.

For tonight and into tomorrow, from 06z and on, a near storm force
low will advance from the south and bear down on the panhandle. As
this low tracks northward, VFR will be replaced with MVFR
conditions. And by 06 to 10z, LLWS and strengthening wind speeds
will be present in the far southern panhandle. These winds will race
northward, so anticipating strong LLWS reaching as far as the Icy
Strait corridor, with somewhat less intense LLWS reaching into the
northern panhandle. Farther up, the possibility of stronger
turbulence will be present, especially for areas south of Angoon
(PAGN), for additional details, please refer to the Alaska Aviation
weather Unit.

In the wake of the system, anticipate diminishing LLWS and wind
speeds in general, especially through the second half of Monday.
Showers will continue to remain prevalent as onshore flow remains,
resulting in occasional periods of IFR conditions for TAF Sites.

.MARINE...Inner Channels: Highest winds currently are in southern
inner channels with 20 kt and gusts to 33 kt common from
Frederick Sound Southward this morning. They are associated with
a frontal band that is expected to move out of the area by midday
taking its winds with it. Focus then shifts to the low moving
north through the eastern gulf late Sunday into Monday. A strong
southerly push of winds is expected to move south to north through
the inner channels starting late Sunday night. Min to moderate
gale force winds (up to 40 kt) and seas up to 9 ft are likely for
some areas, especially Clarence Strait, Sumner, Southern Chatham,
and Stephens Passage. Winds and seas for the south will start to
diminish Monday afternoon. Lynn Canal will be the last place to
see the winds, and will even see north winds possibly up to 20 kt
Monday before there is a rapid switch to southerly Monday
afternoon with winds then increasing to 30 kt. Lynn Canal will
also be the last place to see the winds and seas diminish with
winds of up to 25 kt possibly lasting into Monday night.

Gulf Waters: Generally W to SW winds of 15 to 25 kt this morning
with seas up to 12 ft, most of that swell (a SW swell 7 to 10 ft
with a 12 sec period). Things will rapidly change into Sunday
night as wind direction switches to E for many areas ahead of a
strong low moving north out of the north Pacific. The low will
take a track almost due north just east of 140 W strengthening to
980 mb and moving inland near Cross Sound by Monday afternoon. An
area of moderate to strong W gales to 45 kt will likely be
located on the south side of the low, tracking north with the low,
and will mainly be observed E of 140 W longitude late Sunday night
into Monday. Seas are expected to increase to near 15 to 20 ft
for areas E of 140 W mainly due to wind wave (though a 5 ft SW
swell will be present). Winds and seas will diminish into Monday
night with SW flow of 20 kt returning to much of the gulf waters.
However the extended SW flow will bring some higher swells (up to
7 ft) from the SW into Tuesday keeping wave heights up to 10 ft
into mid week.

.HYDROLOGY...Still some lingering flooding issues from yesterday
this morning. Jordan Creek near Juneau reached minor flood stage
overnight cresting around midnight, but has since dropped back
below minor flood stage as of 4 am. The flood advisory remains out
for Montana Creek though due to residual water issues there. The
next system incoming late Sunday into Monday is expected to drop
another 1 to 3 inches of rain over the area from Cape Fairweather
eastward through Monday afternoon. With the already saturated
ground and the excessive rainfall that Juneau got on Saturday, a
flood watch remain out for Juneau into late Monday night.
