.SHORT TERM...Gale force front continues to move into the
panhandle Sunday evening with rain spreading over the panhandle,
continuing Sunday night with some snow likely for the Klondike
Highway, less likely for the Haines Highway. While forecasted rain
amounts remain unseasonably high and river rises are expected,
flooding is still not anticipated. Widespread gusty winds of 30 to
40 mph are expected across the panhandle, particularly for coastal
communities, as the front continues to move northward and lift
inland through Sunday night.

Behind this front, a transition to showers is expected by early
Monday morning, as a second trough extending from the low near
Kodiak swings towards the panhandle increasing winds and
precipitation once more. This transition to more convective
precipitation due to increasing mid level instability will also be
accompanied by a chance for some isolated thunderstorms in the
northern gulf near Cape Suckling. This cooler air being brought in
may also lead to some snow mixing in with rain Monday for the NE
Gulf coast.

Primary changes to forecast were adjustments to winds based upon
satellite observations and marine observations depicting the front
not progressing into the inner channels as quickly Sunday
afternoon.

.LONG TERM.../Tuesday through Sunday/...A lull in the active pattern
for the upcoming week Tuesday and early Wednesday as previous days
front dissipates and high pressure ridge moves in. Expect lingering
shower activity and cooler air but overall more breaks are likely.
Watching strong low tracking in a gale force front from the west
Wednesday with another potential for moderate to heavy rain hitting
the NE Panhandle Thursday and Friday as the front moves in. Models
have kept the westerly track of this system so main impacts to SE AK
remain along the NE Gulf Coast. In addition getting a slow down in
when the front reaches the area. The parent low for this system
tracks into the Eastern Gulf then moving over the panhandle. After
this system tracks east into the end of the week indications of
shift in weather with lower probability of precipitation and
decrease in winds as weak ridging is established.

.AVIATION...The expected gale force front is in full swing around SE
AK. Satellite passes indicate wind speeds along the coast are up to
40 kts, mainly along the northern coast though. Wind speeds decrease
farther south, up to 30 to 35 knots once you get south of Cross
Sound. Inner channel wind speed reports have been up to 20 to 30
knots along and south of Icy Strait. Lighter north winds have been
reported in Lynn Canal.

The many PIREPS that have been coming in through the day have
indicted LLWS upwards of +/-15 knots.

As this front continues to push into the area, those stronger
winds will spread into Lynn Canal and linger around the panhandle
through tonight. The lowered CIG and VIS will also last through
the night. Improving conditions tomorrow as we transition to a
more showery pattern.

.MARINE...Gale force winds will continue Sunday night along the
northern gulf coast with a brief lull late. Another gale force
front pushes through the NE gulf Monday morning. Gulf sea state
expected to peak in the north Sunday evening around 20 ft, then
subside to mid to high teens through Monday before subsiding
further heading into Tuesday.

For the inner channels, widespread winds of fresh to strong breeze
will continue into Sunday night largely out of the south, with
westerly winds blowing into Icy Strait as the first front pushes
through. These winds will remain elevated in Lynn Canal on Monday,
diminishing to moderate to fresh breeze for other channels by
Monday night.
