Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Quite the dynamic change in weather for the next 24
hours, with light winds, low clouds, and fog transitioning to
higher winds and clearing skies. Big forecast challenge for the
morning time frame is how quickly the fog will move out. Current
thoughts are fog will dissipate south to north, as a system out of
the south moves closer to the Canadian coastline. This will
tighten the gradient and increase wind speeds from south to north,
successfully mixing out any fog and low clouds. So far, this idea
appears to be playing out, with Ketchikan and Prince of Wales
Island currently with few to no clouds and over 6 miles
visibility. Especially in the case of Juneau, a lack of inversion
currently shows that only a lack of wind is keeping Juneau's fog
from clearing.

Next area of interest (besides marine winds discussed more in the
marine discussion) is the potential for high winds in Juneau. As
it stands now, highest likelihood for high winds are in the
overnight hours tonight, with the mostly correct list of
ingredients to force winds down to the surface. 925-850 mb wind
speeds, or right at about ridgetop, look to maximize to around 45
knots overnight, which combined with an inversion in the 900-800
mb layer, will accelerate wind speeds down. The big problem with
this forecast is the critical layer, to which is not as obvious.
Winds aloft between 600-400 mb appear mostly light, somewhere
between 5-10 knots, but the direction does vary by upwards of 120
degrees. While these light winds could be enough to develop the
critical layer, it does not bode well for confidence if wind
directions are from the northwest. Regardless of this critical
layer, wind speeds of 45 knots are enough to generate its own
critical layer, especially if winds aloft are already light.
Therefore, based on the above problems, and the situation lending
itself to high wind moreso than not, a high wind warning has been
issued for downtown Juneau. Not looking for high winds to extend
further into Wednesday than the morning hours as daytime heating
will reduce the effects of any inversions, reducing the wind
speeds.

.LONG TERM.../into the weekend/...

Key messages:
-Outflow pattern continues in the midrange forecast with 20 to 30 kt
winds, gusts to 40 to 45 kts, in N-S oriented inner channels.
-Daily temps will have big swings with colder-than-normal morning
lows and warmer-than-normal afternoon highs.
-Lingering chances of precip for mainly the southern panhandle until
Saturday, that's when the PoPs spread to the Icy Strait area.

Details:

Broad area of low pressure off the coast of the Pacific Northwest
will move northward toward the panhandle. At the same time, a high
pressure system in the Arctic Ocean is expected to build and extend
down into northern Canada. This will cause the N-S pressure gradient
to tighten, influencing strong outflow winds through the northern
channels. Lynn Canal will see northerly winds upwards of 30 to 35
knots with 20 to 30 knots lasting through Friday. Out of Taku Inlet
will see upwards of 20 to 25 knots. Farther south, lighter winds of
15 to 25 knots.

Afternoon temperatures will warm up this week with highs in the low
to mid 50s in the southern panhandle and temps well into the 40s
elsewhere. With clearer skies in the forecast, we will most likely
see cooler temperatures overnight with lows in the 20s to low 30s
for the central and northern panhandle and mid to upper 30s in the
south.

The front associated with the low mentioned earlier is expected to
bring precipitation to mainly the southern panhandle, south of Sitka
and Angoon. And what rain does fall will be light. On Saturday, the
precip may get pushed as far north as Icy Strait, but low confidence
on that.

As we head into the weekend, ensembles continue to keep the weather
active with a low in the Gulf of Alaska giving way to a low moving
up from the Northern Pacific. Right now, nothing stands out as being
problematic but guidance will still need to be watched in case this
changes going forward.

.AVIATION.../Until 12Z Thursday/...Areas of dense fog with
visibilities of 1/4 SM or less will occur into mid-morning for some
central & northern Panhandle locations, mainly around PAJN, PAGS,
PAPG, & PAWG, giving some LIFR CIG & VIS conditions for that
timeframe. Expect MVFR to VFR conditions elsewhere this morning.
After this morning, expect CIG & VIS conditions to improve to the
VFR flight category all across southeast Alaska & last through
the end of the TAF period. SFC winds will steadily enhance for
outflow prone areas in the northern & eastern Panhandle as we
progress through time, especially for the latter half of the TAF
period as northeasterly outflow winds will begin setting in from
an area of high pressure centered to the northeast over Canada.
LLWS magnitudes of generally up to around 25 to 35 kt out of a
northeasterly direction centered between 1 to 2.5 kft aloft are
expected for portions of the central & southern Panhandle for the
latter half of the TAF period.

.MARINE...No significant changes to the marine forecast, with the
message of increasing northerly winds still intact. Winds will
pick up to strong breeze to gale force by tonight, with highest
wind speeds out of north south channels and interior passes. Lynn
Canal looks to be the big winner, with approximately 6 hours of
sustained gale force winds tonight, with Taku Inlet in a close
second of around 30 knots.

Wave heights were bumped up in Lynn Canal and Stephens Passage to
10 ft and 8 ft respectfully, due to long duration higher wind
speeds. These heights are slightly underdone in terms of fully
developed seas, due to lack of confidence for longer duration
higher wind speeds into Friday and beyond.
