Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
The forecast has changed very little within the past 12
hours, showing that there will be several warm fronts transitioning
across the Interior from the southeast throughout the next couple of
days and brings chances of snow showers along with it, especially
for Friday as there will be even a better surge of moisture from the
second low associated with the shortwave trough moving up into the
Gulf of Alaska. This initial front is going to create some gap flow
and gusty winds for the passes tomorrow. With a ridge setting up
ahead of the low and extending over the Upper Tanana, there will be
notably warmer temperatures through Friday, and above freezing for
most of the lower basins. Cooler and drier conditions will then
follow going into the weekend.

.KEY WEATHER MESSAGES...
Central and Eastern Interior...
- Southerly flow through the Alaska Range passes increase late
  tonight into Thursday with gusts up to 45-55 mph possible. South
  to southeasterly winds also increase across the Interior,
  allowing for warmer temperatures.

- Isolated to scattered snow showers return by later today as a
  series of fronts from lows in the Gulf of Alaska lift north.

- Temperatures trend colder through Wednesday with highs in the
  teens and 20s and lows in the single digits and teens.
  Increasing southerly flow Thursday and Friday will lead to
  warmer temperatures as highs climb into the 20s and 30s, warmest
  on Thursday.

West Coast and Western Interior...
- Quiet and mostly dry conditions along with gradually cooling
  temperatures continue through Wednesday.

- Northerly winds increase late tonight into Thursday, remaining
  elevated through the weekend. Strongest winds are expected along
  the West Coast, peaking around 20-35 mph with gusts to 40-55
  mph.

- Isolated to scattered snow showers return starting Thursday as
  a series of fronts pass overhead.

- Temperatures trend colder through Wednesday with highs in the
  teens to low 30s and lows in the single digits and teens for
  most, with some coastal areas seeing lows in the 20s.
  Temperatures trend warmer Thursday and Friday as highs climb
  into the 20s and 30s.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
- Northeasterly winds increase Thursday into Friday, remaining
  elevated through the weekend. Strongest winds are expected along
  the western Arctic Coast, peaking around 20-30 mph with gusts
  to 35-50 mph.

- Isolated to scattered snow showers return by later today as a
  series of shortwave troughs, and an associated front passes
  overhead.

- Temperatures trend colder through today with highs in the
  single digits and teens to low 20s and lows mostly in the single
  digits above and below zero and teens. High temperatures will
  return to the low to mid 20s across the North Slope by Thursday
  with the frontal passages.

.FORECAST ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION...

A series of lows will be passing to our south over the course of the
next couple of days, with an associated low level jet and warm front
with the first wave passing through by later this afternoon and
throughout the evening. The position of the secondary low will
establish itself over the Aleutians. As the pressure gradient
tightens by later today, the southerly jet is going to produce some
gusty winds through the pass, although it is still looking at this
time with some of the higher res guidance that winds should remain
just below criteria for the most part, although given trends and
current . Winds will also gusting up to around 60 mph for Windy Pass
as well. The southeasterly jet over the Tanana Valley will also
allow for relatively warmer temperatures to be advected up into
portions of the Interior, and therefore likely seeing some areas
getting above freezing. A more broad swath of moisture will expand
over the region with higher precipitable moisture and allow for
there to be a better probability of some on and off snow showers on
Friday. Some of the areas further west and more in the deformation
zone could see some higher snowfall amounts in the order of 1 to 3
inches possible, while some of the lower elevations further east
within the Tanana Valley likely not seeing total amounts anymore
than an inch. There will also be some stronger winds with a
tighter gradient along the West Coast, with winds out of the
north approaching gusts around 50-55 mph. High pressure has
settled in over the Arctic Plains/North Slope, which has kept
these areas nearly cloud free, although this will transition into
cloudier skies with an increase of snow showers by later in the
day tomorrow and especially into Friday as this breaks down, with
the presence of 700 mb shortwaves moving up from the southeast.
The pattern looks to remain somewhat messy, with embedded weak
waves propagating over the entire state from the low to our south.
There will be a cooling and drying pattern by this weekend, and
going into next week, and then there could be an increasing chance
of precipitation towards the end of the week with another
approaching major shortwave trough.

.HYDROLOGY...
No concerns at this time. Freeze up is beginning across the area and
is expected to continue as colder temperatures persist.

.EXTENDED FORECAST DAYS 4-7...

The second low that sets up between Kodiak Island and the Kenai
Peninsula will continue to spin in place and weaken through the end
of the weekend. Another low is looking to move out of Siberia and
across the Bering Sea, south of St. Paul Island on Sunday.
This will aid in prolonging the broad "troughy" and somewhat
"unsettled" pattern into next week. A slight cooling trend can also
be expected across the state with snow showers across the West
Coast. Models still continue to show some ridging setting up over
the eastern portions of the state by Mon.SYNOPSIS...
