.SYNOPSIS...

Wet...wet...wet. Active weather continues with troughing over the
West Coast and a Bering Sea low moving NE over the Seward
Peninsula. Accompanying this system is a river of tropical
moisture which will be spread out across areas of Upper Alaska.
Heavy rainfall is expected for the Upper Kuskokwim, the central
Brooks Range, and areas along the Dalton Highway Summits. As the
system moves up the coast, a strong low level jet will form,
bringing advisory level winds from McGrath to eastern Galena this
afternoon. This may vary, however, depending on where some slight
clearing occurs. With the trough expected to amplify as the low
progresses up the coast, south/southwesterly flow will set up over
the Alaska Range bringing advisory level winds through the
passes.

.KEY WEATHER MESSAGES...
Central and Eastern Interior...
- Light to moderate rainfall continues across the southern
  interior through the morning before shifting northwest during
  the afternoon.

- Heavy rainfall is expected for the Dalton Highway summits and
  central Brooks Range this morning through Tuesday night with
  smaller rivers and streams potentially reaching flood stage.
  Additional rain accumulations through Tuesday night are
  forecasted to be between 2" and 4".

- Wind advisories are in effect for southerly winds gusting up to
  60 mph through Windy Pass, 50 to 55 mph through Isabel Pass, and
  around 50 mph in Delta Junction. The most likely time frame is
  between this afternoon and Tuesday night.

- Warmer temperatures and breaks in the cloud cover are possible
  Tuesday into Wednesday, for Fortymile Country and the Upper
  Tanana.

West Coast and Western Interior...
- A very wet storm system will continue to track north along the
  coast throughout today, bringing widespread moderate rainfall
  of around 1" and heavier rainfall in excess of 2" to 3" for the
  Nulato Hills and the south-central Brooks Range.

- Wind advisories are also in effect for a broad swath extending
  from the YK Delta northward across the western interior with
  wind gusts in the 40-50 mph range expected this afternoon.

- Heavier precipitation will continue for the Western Interior
  Tuesday and Wednesday, with additional rainfall ranging between
  0.5" and 1.75". The heaviest amounts will be from Huslia, to
  McGrath, to Holy Cross.

North Slope and Brooks Range..
- Another round of widespread rain will begin to move across the
  N. Slope beginning around this afternoon, with the heaviest
  amount of precipitation expected at the higher elevations.

- South winds gusting up to about 50 mph are expected across the
  central and eastern Brooks Range tonight into Tuesday
  afternoon.

- Snow may begin to mix in with the rain, beginning late tonight.
  Not much in terms of accumulation is expected. However minor
  accumulation are possible at the higher elevations along the
  Brooks Range from Point Lay to Anaktuvuk Pass.

.FORECAST ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION...
The week begins with a 990mb surface low, associated with a broad
area of troughing stretching from the Arctic to the Bering Sea,
continuing to progress up the West Coast and into the North Slope.
By Tuesday morning, Arctic air will be advecting over the North
Slope at the time energy from the coastal system will be over the
area. This will provide chances for some light accumulation at
higher elevations across the Brooks Range. Thereafter, as the
system slowly tracks to the east, a mix of rain and snow will be
likely along the North Slope. The better chances for snow will be
on the western periphery of the system, with the aid of the Arctic
air from the NW, and at the higher elevations. Looking over the
South- Central Brooks Range, significant rainfall is expected with
coastal system crossing over the Range, providing some up- slope
assistance. Areas between the Dalton Hwy. Summits and Ambler can
expect rain totals between 2" and 4" today through late Tuesday
night. This could result in smaller rivers and streams potentially
reaching flood stage. Similar rain accumulations are expected
between the Nulato Hills to areas north and west of Tanana. A
strong low-level jet will accompany the Coastal System as it
progresses up the western portion of the state. The best chance
for these winds to mix down will be along the Upper Kuskokwim this
afternoon, with gusts up to 50 mph possible, with a slight chance
of clearing possible. Looking farther to the southeast, the Upper
Tanana and Fortymile Country will be seeing some clearing Tuesday
morning, with the downsloping assistance with the southwesterly
flow coming over the AK Range. This will result in warmer and
drier conditions compared to the rest of the state. The trough over
the coast is expected to continue amplifying, resulting in
south/southwest flow coming across the Alaska Range. This will
result in strong gap winds gusting up to 60 mph through Windy
Pass, 50 to 55 mph through Isabel Pass, and around 50 mph in Delta
Junction. The strongest gap winds will be this afternoon through
Tuesday night. South/southwesterly flow will continue from the
Interior to the West Coast through the end of the week, which will
continue to provide wet and windy conditions.

.FIRE WEATHER...No change from the previous discussion

Fire weather concerns will be very low across the state with the
exception for the Upper Tanana Valley and adjacent upland areas. Min
RH values dip into the 30s at valley locations each day this week.
Southerly winds increase across the Alaska Range including Isabel
Pass on Monday with gusts up to 60 mph expected on Monday and
Tuesday. Warming temperatures and less cloud cover should allow for
lower RH across a broader portion of the eastern interior on Tuesday
and Wednesday.

.HYDROLOGY...No change from the previous discussion
Previous Discussion issued at 3:48pm AKDT on Sun Aug 24...

River flood watches were issued for the tributaries of the Koyukuk
and Kobuk Rivers with a hydrologic outlook remaining in effect for
the majority of northwestern Alaska. There is one primary round of
heavy precipitation remaining associated with a strong storm lifting
northeast along the West Coast today, but areas of light to
moderate rain continue through at least Friday. This final round
is associated with a deepening low spinning up the West Coast on
Monday and spreads across the North Slope on Tuesday. Widespread
additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are expected by
Tuesday evening. Locally higher amounts in excess of 4 inches are
possible where rainfall is most persistent, particularly at higher
elevations of the West Coast and Western Interior. Furthermore,
snow levels will be relatively high for this event; above 8000
feet allowing for high elevation glacier melt. Additional rainfall
is possible through the end of the week (heaviest south of the
Alaska Range) and rising water levels are expected for most
interior rivers.

.EXTENDED FORECAST DAYS 4-7...

In short, the wet pattern is expected to continue over the next
several days. Broad N-S oriented troughing is expected to
continue out west through next weekend. Models are beginning to
hint at a similar coastal system moving up the Bering Sea and
over central portions of the Seward Peninsula Sunday afternoon.
This will aid in pushing the eastern ridge out of the state and
further into Canada, reverting the majority of the state to a
familiar southwesterly pattern.
