Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Overall forecast continues to remain on track with a series of
lows working their way into the northern portion of the Gulf. This
will set up a decent gradient across the state, bringing strong
wind gusts over the West Coast and Alaska Range. These lows will
continue to swing warm fronts across the state, one of which will
stall out Friday afternoon by a building high over the Chukchi.
This will allow for some decent snow showers across the state
through the weekend. The following week will begin with higher
pressure building up over the eastern portion of the state,
bringing the cooling trend back over these areas. However, the
West Coast will continue to be under broad "troughiness" which
will allow snow showers to continue for much of next week.

.KEY WEATHER MESSAGES...
Central and Eastern Interior...
- Southerly flow through the Alaska Range passes will continue to
  gust up to 45-55 mph through the early afternoon. South to
  southeasterly winds also increase across the Interior, allowing
  for warmer temperatures.

- Snow showers expected today for the Fortymile Country and NE
  Interior. Snow showers will be more widespread with the frontal
  passage on Friday, with more moisture associated with it and
  less down-sloping.

- South/southeasterly flow today and Friday will lead to warmer
  temperatures as highs climb into the 20s and 30s. The warmest
  temperatures will be seen today.

West Coast and Western Interior...
- Northerly winds will continue to remain elevated through the
  weekend. Strongest winds are expected along the West Coast,
  peaking around 20-35 mph with gusts to 40-55 mph.

- Isolated to scattered snow showers return starting today as a
  series of fronts pass overhead.

- Temperatures will be warmer today and Friday as highs climb
  into the 20s and 30s.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
- Northeasterly winds increase tonight into Friday, remaining
  elevated through the weekend. Strongest winds are expected along
  the western Arctic Coast, peaking around 20-30 mph with gusts
  to 35-50 mph.

- Isolated to scattered snow showers can be expected across the
  North Slope through the weekend with a series of fronts moving
  over the Brooks Range. Heaviest snowfall is expected on the
  south facing slopes of the eastern Brooks Range, 3" to 6"
  possible. 1" to 3" expected elsewhere.

- Temperatures will trend warmer into upper teens and 20s today.
  The series of warm fronts will hold these temperatures in place
  through the weekend.

.FORECAST ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION...
The overall pattern remains unchanged with broad troughing across
the entirety of the state. A 950mb low has been progressing along
the western side opf Kodiak Island, setting up a decent pressure
gradient across the state. The first of many warm fronts has
progressed over the Interior, bringing scattered snow showers
along northern and western portions of the Interior. This low will
move into Bristol Bay by the early morning, setting up a good
channel for southerly gap winds through the Alaska Range. Winds
are expected to gust up to 55 mph through Isabel and Windy passes
through the early afternoon, today. Looking over the West Coast,
gusty, northerly winds are expected to continue throughout the
weekend with a series of lows moving up into the northern Gulf of
Alaska. This could allow for some areas of low-level wind shear
across the West Coast/Western Interior over the next day or so.

Another 950mb low will move up to the east of Kodiak Island by
this evening, which will continue to bring warm southeasterly flow
into the Interior. Associated with this low will be another warm
front, with a SW to NE orientation, with a higher content of
precipitable water that will progress from the SE portion of the
state up to the northwest Interior by Friday afternoon. This front
is expected to become stationary by this time, extending from the
YK-Delta to the eastern Brooks Range. The stalling of this front
is due to an area of high pressure that will be building up over
the Chukchi Sea, just off of the northwest Arctic Coast. This
setup will bring widespread snow showers across the state, ranging
from 1" to 3". The heaviest snowfall can be expected for areas
underneath this front once it becomes blocked by the high over
the Chukchi. This low continue to move eastward along the coast,
gradually weakening at the same time, through the end of the
weekend.

Small bits of energy from Friday's front will get wrapped
up in the broad cyclonic motion and move over the Seward Peninsula
by Sunday morning. This will help keep the "broad" troughing in
place throughout the state, allowing for snow showers to continue
across the West Coast into early next week. Looking farther north,
energy will continue to be advected across the Yukon and over the
North Slope, allowing snow showers to continue up there as well
into early next week.

.HYDROLOGY...
No concerns at this time. Freeze up is beginning across the area and
is expected to continue as colder temperatures persist.

.EXTENDED FORECAST DAYS 4-7...
The Arctic high over the Chukchi will continue to work its way
toward the northern Arctic Coast to start off the early week.
High pressure is looking to continue building over the eastern
portion of the state, which will bring the cooling trend back
across these areas. The West Coast will continue to be socked in
with snow showers as upper level shortwaves continue to rotate
around the broad troughing that is set up over the Bering Sea.
These conditions are looking continue through the end of the week.
