.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

Discussion:

In the near term, not much has changed with regards to the forecast.
More clouds and cooler temperatures today with scattered showers
beginning to pick up across the Susitna Valley as a shortwave moves
through the nearly zonal flow. Water vapor imagery shows this wave
quite well as it moves across western Alaska into the interior.
Expect showers to continue to pick up across the valley this
afternoon and slowly sag southwards as the wave progresses east.
Wasilla/Palmer area down toward Anchorage will be on the very edge,
but could see some light showers work in this evening.

As mentioned in the previous forecast discussion, typical gap wind
areas have been slow to increase over the past 24 hrs. Observational
data and models indicated that this is probably due to everything
slowing down, including the building of the coastal ridge along the
Gulf coast. Still expect gusty winds to develop later tonight as the
Gulf low shifts south and high pressure fully builds over the Gulf.
With several lows lifting up across western and central Alaska...gap
winds will be more prevalent than not throughout much of the week,
though some lulls can be anticipated.

More significantly on the horizon is the trough that is progged to
drop across the Bering and into the North Pacific Wednesday into
Thursday. Mid and long-range models are still struggling on how to
handle this system that would impact where and how much
precipitation can be expected for portions of Southcentral. The
associated surface front will near the southern end of Kodiak Island
late Wednesday pushing across the islands and towards the Barren
Islands and southern Kenai Peninsula through mid-morning Wednesday.
Strong southerly flow will result in enhanced precipitation along
higher terrain over Kodiak and the eastern Kenai. The susitna Valley
also looks to get decent rainfall totals out of this system as it
will have tapped into tropical moisture. Coastal areas will also see
modest rainfall amounts through the end of the week. Elsewhere,
downsloping may limit precipitation initially but will be highly
dependent of wind flow direction at the time...which models are also
struggling with. Regardless, if any outdoor activities are planned
this week, keep an eye out for the latest forecast updates as these
details continue to get adjusted.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA/BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS
(Days 1 through 3: Tonight through Wednesday)...

The atmospheric river event for Southwest Alaska and the Bering
Sea remains on track with only minor adjustments to the forecast
through mid-week. A gale force low in the southern Bering Sea is
lifting northward, enhancing a front across the central
Aleutians/Bering Sea toward the Pribilof Islands this afternoon.
Along the front, precipitable water values around 2 inches stretch
up from the North Pacific, reaching the Aleutians, and decrease to
around 1 inch where the front is beginning to move inland over the
Kuskokwim Delta. Ahead of the front, high pressure extends across
the eastern Aleutians, Alaska Peninsula, and into mainland
Southwest Alaska. In association with this ridge, fog and stratus
have been prevalent.

Upper-level longwave troughing centered near Kamchatka will slowly
shift east through the week, causing the atmospheric river to
gradually slide east into Southwest Alaska from the
Aleutians/Bering Sea as high pressure exits into the Gulf of
Alaska. The elongated, but fairly compact, gale force low in the
southern Bering passes west of the Pribilof Islands tonight,
spreading moderate to heavy rain across the islands and nudging
into the northwestern portions of the Kuskokwim Delta, including
Nunivak Island. As the low lifts further, into Norton Sound by
Monday, the front and associated heavier rainfall shifts east into
the eastern Aleutians and begins to push into the Kuskokwim Delta.
Fog will begin to scour out across the eastern Bering Sea in the
lee of the Aleutian Range along the Alaska Peninsula as southerly
winds intensify ahead of the front. Meanwhile, fog and stratus are
likely to stick around on the more-exposed south side of the
Alaska Peninsula.

Along with heavier rain, southerly gale force winds will gust as
high as 50 mph Monday morning through early Monday evening before
winds cut off fairly sharply. The southerly fetch of winds will
push a modest storm surge along the coast which could lead to high
water levels, around 1.5 to 2.5 feet above the normal high tide
line for communities along the northern Kuskokwim Bay coastline
during high tide on Monday afternoon, for which a coastal flood
advisory has been issued. This could be exacerbated by the half
an inch to 1.25 inches of rain forecast for the area through
Monday afternoon, which will help to fill low-lying areas that
will no longer be able to absorb/dampen the rise from the tide. As
a result, there is a fair bit of uncertainty in the forecast
water level, but it is unlikely to exceed 2.5 feet and is expected
to recede with the tide on Monday evening.

Heavy rain quickly pivots through the eastern Aleutians to the
southern Alaska Peninsula Monday night. Meanwhile, a second,
weaker low develops along the front in the eastern Bering Sea.
This low will keep northern portions of the front lingering over
the Kuskokwim Delta and Western Capes region into Tuesday,
prolonging the steady rainfall, even as the leading edge of
precipitation spreads into Bristol Bay and the Lower Kuskokwim
Valley for Tuesday and Wednesday. All-in-all, this series of wet
systems looks to bring generally 1.5 to 3.0 inches of rain across
the Southwest Alaska, including the Pacific side of the Alaska
Peninsula through Wednesday, while lower amounts of 1.0 to 1.5
inches of rain are expected for the Aleutian and Pribilof
Islands. Localized areas of 2.5 to 4.0 inches of rain are
possible, particularly in the higher terrain of the Western Capes
and near Togiak. Amounts of rain less than one inch are possible
for the downsloped Bering Sea side of the Alaska Peninsula. The
main concern with this rainfall, which falls toward the higher
end of climatological three-day rainfall totals for the region,
will be significant ponding of water, as well as flooding of low-
lying areas and small streams. As a result, a flood watch has been
issued for the interior Kuskokwim Delta, Kuskokwim Valley, and
northern Bristol Bay. Major rivers, including the Kuskokwim River,
are not expected to flood.

Looking ahead, the wet pattern persists into the end of the week
with the development of a third low south of the Alaska Peninsula.
Stay tuned to the forecast for updates as the wet pattern kicks
into gear tonight and lasts through much of the week.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Wednesday to Sunday)...

An deep trough digs across the Bering mid-week continuing the
rainfall through the Aleutians, Southwest Alaska and the Alaska
Peninsula. These conditions reach Kodiak Island early Wednesday
before spreading into most of Southcentral through the day
Wednesday. This includes the Kenai Peninsula, Anchorage and the
Mat-Su Valley. On Thursday, these showers spread into the Copper
River Basin and Prince William Sound. Rainfall amounts as of now
range from one to three inches across Southcentral and the
Southwest. Strong winds will accompany the rainfall across
Southcentral with gusts ranging from 45 to 55 mph. In the wake of
these showers, multiple rounds of precipitation move through
Southwest and Alaska Peninsula as weak lows move through Bristol
Bay through Friday. After Thursday in Southcentral, scattered
rain showers of varying intensity will prevail through next
weekend. This prolonged period of rainfall could lead to river
rises especially in the Kenai Peninsula Rivers and the
Yentna/Skwentna Rivers.

Late this week, a low moves through the Bering Sea resulting in
windy and wet conditions for the Western and Central Aleutians,
including the Pribilof Islands. Its front reaches the Southwest
coast as early as Saturday. Onshore southwesterly to southerly
winds through the day are likely as the low moves northeast of
the Pribilof Islands to the Bering Strait through Sunday.

&&.AVIATION...

PANC...VFR conditions expected. Southerly winds with gusts up to
20 to 25 kt are expected through this evening from Turnagain Arm
over the terminal. There is low confidence with the onset of gusty
winds, but once they begin, the winds will likely last through at
least Monday night. The potential for showers increases to 30 to
50 percent chance tonight and decreases later Monday morning.
