.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

A broad low over the southern Gulf of Alaska continues to slowly
move east as a weak low hovers over the Alaska Interior near the
Al-Can border. Mostly quiet conditions for much of Southcentral
tonight. The exception will be along the coast, primarily for
eastern Kenai and western Prince William Sound who will see rounds
of rain and a rain/snow mix at the surface, with all snow at the
higher elevations. Clouds and light showery conditions will spread
along the rest of the north Gulf coast and clouds will spill
further inland but will remain mostly precipitation free.
Upsloping will bring increased probabilities for precipitation
along the Western Alaska Range.

Overall daytime highs will remain above normal for mid-March,
with a gradual warming trend into the weekend. No significant
weather or cold producers are on the horizon through the weekend.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA/BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS
(This Afternoon through Monday afternoon)...

Cold air continues to filter down from the north as a upper trough
lingers in place, which is impacting a large swath of the
Southwest Alaska mainland. This trough will linger in place for
most of the forecast period. Snow showers are affecting most of
the Southwest Alaska mainland from Bethel to King Salmon as a
result of this trough. The coastal areas of the mainland will see
the highest chances for precipitation. The Bering is a bit more
interesting. Though a ridge is currently over the western and
central Aleutians, cold air is still filtering down from the
north, allowing for stratus and sporadic snow showers to impact
these regions. A low is passing south of the Aleutians in the
north Pacific. This is not having too much of an effect
precipitation-wise, but gale force winds are impacting the
central Aleutians and will continue until early Saturday morning
when the low drops south. The low, combined with continued cold
air advection will cause gale force gap winds to impact the
eastern Aleutians through Monday.

On Sunday, a shortwave will drop past the Pribilof Islands,
allowing for a period of snow showers and small craft winds. This
is followed by a broad ridge pushing in from the west. By Sunday
afternoon, the ridge will envelope the western half of the
Aleutians. This time, precipitation chances will dwindle as winds
turn southerly, bringing warmer air into the region and increasing
atmospheric stability. The same situation as Friday prevails for
the southwest mainland as the trough sits in place through Sunday.
Continued show showers and colder temperatures from northerly
flow remains.

By Monday, the large ridge will move into the Eastern Aleutians,
drying the region out and decreasing wind speeds. Also, the ridge
will start to pressure the trough over the southwest
mainland, elongating and weakening it. However, gale force gap
winds will continue near the Alaska peninsula as northerly winds
linger. Snow showers in the southwest mainland will slowly dwindle
through Monday as the low is stretched. The end of the forecast
period reveals a frontal system moving into the Bering from the
west. Another bout of gale force winds is expected in the western
Aleutians. Precipitation will be either snow or a rain/snow mix as
upper level temperatures remain on the cold side despite southerly
flow.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Tuesday - Friday)...

The extended period starts out with an upper level low pressure
over the central Alaska and extending deep into the North Pacific.
A strong ridge of high pressure will dominate the western portion
of the state and the Bering Sea. As the week progresses the upper
level features become entrenched, forming a blocking pattern
across the entire forecast region.

This pattern will setup a prolonged moderate northerly wind
pattern across the Bearing Sea, Aleutian Islands and the western
part of the State, allowing cooler air to move into this region.
The Upper level low over the central part of Alaska and the Gulf
of Alaska will allow mostly weak surface lows to transit along the
low and trough axis bringing periods shower/snowy precipitation
along the Gulf Coast and Eastern Alaskan Peninsula.
