...A TORNADO WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 730 PM CDT FOR
NORTHEASTERN TRAVERSE COUNTY...

At 705 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado
was located near Immanuel Church, or 7 miles northeast of Wheaton,
moving northeast at 15 mph.

HAZARD...Tornado.

SOURCE...Radar indicated rotation.

IMPACT...Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without 
         shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage 
         to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur.  Tree damage is 
         likely.

This tornadic thunderstorm will remain over mainly rural areas of
northeastern Traverse County.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

TAKE COVER NOW! Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest
floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a
mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter
and protect yourself from flying debris.

was located near Immanuel Church, or 9 miles northeast of Wheaton,
moving northeast at 15 mph.

HAZARD...Tornado and quarter size hail.

.KEY MESSAGES...

- There is a Slight Risk, level 2 of 5, for severe storms through
  the overnight hours, with the highest over northern SD and west
  central MN. The strongest storms will be capable of producing
  winds of around 60 mph and hail around 1" in diameter.

- There is a Marginal Risk. level 1 out of 5, for severe storms on
  Wednesday, mainly over east central SD south of a line from
  Huron to Sisseton. The strongest storms will be capable of
  producing winds of around 60 mph and hail around 1" in diameter.

Issued at 645 PM CDT Tue Jul 22 2025

Showers and a few thunderstorms continue on a line from around
Faulkton north-northeast to Ellendale and Wheaton, MN. The
strongest storms are in a more favorable area over MN. We'll
continue to monitor the latest trends. The Heat Advisory has been
cancelled, as heat index values have fallen below 100F.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 306 PM CDT Tue Jul 22 2025

Clouds continue to minimize the daytime heating over north
central SD. As a result, we have been able to cancel a few counties
from the ongoing Heat Advisory. Still, readings in the mid 90s to
near 105 will remain possible, highest over south central SD where
less clouds have been around.

We had a round of strong severe storms during the late morning
hours, with additional strong storms capable of producing small hail
by 19Z again this afternoon. We'll continue to monitor the latest
trends as they are developing in a more humid area with higher
dewpoints still in the 70s. This area has DCAPE values near 1k J/kg,
and increasing supercell composite parameter currently around 4 and
with the help of the additional low level moisture, LCL heights at
or around 100m. The higher shear values remain over northwestern SD
into ND, but are still around 30kt.

For later this evening, we'll once again need to be watching to our
west and northwest (western Dakotas). Similarly to the surface
through, motion would be to the east-southest. With that motion, we
could have another round of storms moving across northern SD late
this evening through the overnight hours. Confidence in specifics
have been difficult, so we will rely on CAMs but also persistence
until the trough exits to our southeast late morning/early afternoon
Wednesday. An SPC Slight Risk for severe weather remains, mainly
over the northern half of SD. We'll continue to highlight the threat
of 1" hail and winds at or above 60mph for storms that develop later
this afternoon into the overnight hours. Winds look to be the main
concern as we get farther into the overnight.

Much cooler air will settle in for Wednesday, with highs in the mid
70s to near 80. There is some uncertainly for our southern counties,
which may stay a bit warmer if the boundary slows down. Some CAMs are
a little farther north, allowing for strong to severe storms still
in our southern counties through 00Z Thursday. While not looking for
another overnight of storms, we'll also need to be on the lookout
for convection over western SD late Wednesday afternoon that may
brush our western or southwestern counties Wednesday night.

Dry weather should return for the daytime hours Thursday, with 20-
30% chances of showers continuing Thursday night on, again mainly
during the evening and overnight hours. Temperatures will be back
into the 80s and 90s for Friday on, along with the 70 degree
dewpoints. Heat index values will near 100 to 105 again over
portions of our southern counties from each afternoon from Saturday
through Monday.
