Updated at 1028 AM MST Fri Jan 3 2025 - Record high temperatures are expected across central and western NM today and Saturday. - Strong westerly winds with gusts between 40 and 55 mph are expected on Saturday. Critical fire weather conditions will likely occur across much of west central and eastern NM due to the combination of strong winds and low humidity. - Widespread light snowfall is possible beginning late Monday through Wednesday, though uncertainty remains in coverage and amounts. && .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 328 AM MST Fri Jan 3 2025 Record high temperatures are likely across western and central New Mexico today and Saturday, with temperatures up to 20 degrees above normal. Gusty west winds return to the state on Saturday as a system crosses Colorado. The combination of high winds and low relative humidity values will bring critical fire weather conditions to a bulk of the state Saturday afternoon. Temperatures plummet on Sunday and will stay relatively cold throughout much of next week. Widespread light snowfall is possible across much of New Mexico beginning Monday night and continuing through Wednesday, though total snow amounts are low at this time. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Saturday) Issued at 328 AM MST Fri Jan 3 2025 The NAEFS mean 700 and 500 mb geopotential heights are forecast to vary from the 90th to 98th percentile for this time of year as an unseasonably strong ridge axis crosses the forecast area today. As a result, high temperatures are forecast to vary from 9-19 degrees above 1991-2020 averages this afternoon with widespread record and near record readings likely. Broad sheets of thin, high cirrus clouds will also cross today, and they may hold temperatures a tad cooler than readings would be otherwise. An upper level trough crossing the central Rockies on Saturday will steer a strong speed maximum in the polar jet stream over the forecast area producing southwest and west surface wind gusts in the 35-55 mph range. The strongest gusts could reach near 60 mph in the Guadalupe Mountains, where models indicate 700 mb wind speeds should peak between 50-70 KT. Later shifts will probably issue a Wind Advisory in some areas for Saturday afternoon. A Pacific cold front will also begin to move into the state on Saturday causing high temperatures along and west of the continental divide to begin to trend cooler. Nonetheless, readings will again climb around 7-20 degrees above 30-year averages on Saturday with more record and near record warmth. Humidities will also plummet with fire weather concerns in many locations. && .LONG TERM... (Saturday night through Thursday) Issued at 328 AM MST Fri Jan 3 2025 Windy conditions will blow over into the beginning of the long term period Saturday night, where gusts up to 40mph will still possible across the central and northeast highlands, as well as the west central mountains. Winds will likely be a bit stronger near the mountaintops of the Sangre de Cristo, Jemez and Sacramento mountains. The winds will look to stick around through Saturday night thanks to a pocket of ~50-60kt 700mb winds over the central mountain chain, and the development of a surface low across eastern NM that will push into TX. The progression of this surface low eastward will result in a few changes to the weather in NM. A first, small change is the chance for some wrap around precipitation between 06-12Z Sunday for Union and Colfax Counties, mainly in the form of sprinkles and flurries, but a stray snow shower cannot be ruled out. The second, larger change is a sharp drop in temperatures from a cold air mass moving in behind the surface low. Highs in the eastern plains may drop as much as 30F from Saturday to Sunday. Little relief in the colder temperatures is expected into the beginning of next week as northwest flow remains over the state. Widespread light snowfall is still in the forecast beginning late Monday and continuing through Wednesday. Northerly flow over the western US will send down a shortwave through the Great Basin and AZ on Tuesday. Models have come into a little better agreement on how this wintry system begins, but there is still uncertainty in a multitude of factors, including location of the center of the shortwave, whether it becomes/remains a closed low, how much moisture will this storm be able to tap into, and will there be sufficient forcing for more widespread precipitation. Details will become more apparent the closer we get to Monday/Tuesday, but confidence is moderate that widespread light snow is possible across much of NM with this system. Ensemble clusters are somewhat split between having and not having this system form a closed low, but there appears to be more agreement from deterministic models on the formation of a closed low. Needless to say, there is still high uncertainty with this system, but the potential for minor impacts from snow is in place. Current thinking is that snow will move north to south across the state beginning late Monday and ending early to midday Wednesday. An additional, smaller detail from this timeframe is cold, easterly flow will be present across the eastern plains on Tuesday, paving the way for a potential strong gap wind in and around ABQ Tuesday night. Forecast confidence continues to decrease after Wednesday as models and ensembles do not agree on the evolution of our wintry system. There is a chance that the system sticks around and reintroduces precipitation late next week, but there is high uncertainty with that. && .AVIATION... (18Z TAFS) Issued at 1028 AM MST Fri Jan 3 2025 A scattered to broken deck of mid to high clouds will enter western NM midday spreading east and reaching eastern NM around sunset. Breezy southwest winds across east central and northeast NM this afternoon due to surface lee trough. Some gusts of up to 30 kts possible from KCQC to KCAO. Generally light south to southwest winds overnight. Ridgetop winds increase across the far western mountains early Saturday morning ahead of an upper level trough over the Great Basin with LLWS around FL008 at KGUP beginning around 08Z. Southwest to west winds increase quickly across the highlands at the end of the TAF period with a Pacific cold front and clearing of mid to high level clouds entering western NM. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 328 AM MST Fri Jan 3 2025 Record and near record high temperatures will continue today and Saturday as an unseasonably strong ridge of high pressure aloft gives way to an upper level low pressure system crossing the central Rockies. The upper low will steer the polar jet stream over the forecast area Saturday and Saturday night, as well as a Pacific cold front. Wind gusts in the 30-50 mph range are expected Saturday, and humidities will plummet below 15 percent in many lower elevation locations, resulting in widespread fire weather concerns over west central areas and from the Sandia and Manzano Mountains (below snowpack) northeastward. With this forecast package we will upgrade the Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning. Later shifts will need to keep an eye on the east central plains in case the wind forecast strengthens there causing the locally critical fire weather conditions that are currently forecast to become more widespread. Cooler temperatures are then forecast during the first half of the coming week. Models are agreeing better now on an upper level trough digging southward over the western US and forming a closed upper level low pressure system over the S CA/upper Baja Peninsula coast by late Tuesday. This storm system will draw a moist backdoor cold front through NM Tuesday and Tuesday night with a chance for light rain and snow over much of the fire weather forecast area. The best chance for any accumulation looks to be over the northern mountains Monday night through Tuesday night. The potential also exists for a strong east wind below canyons opening into the central valley Tuesday night.
