Updated at 329 AM MDT Mon Mar 17 2025 - Winds begin strengthening on Monday, with windy conditions across much of eastern and northeastern NM. Critical fire conditions will allow for the rapid spread and growth of any fire that starts. - A potent spring storm impacts the region on Tuesday, bringing strong winds area wide, blowing dust to much of eastern and south central NM, and snow/blowing snow to the northern mountains. Critical fire weather conditions also return and will continue to promote rapid fire spread across much of eastern and central NM. - Gusty winds and critical fire weather conditions are possible again Thursday and Friday across eastern NM. && .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 329 AM MDT Mon Mar 17 2025 The pleasant weather from the last couple of days will be shortlived as conditions deteriorate over the next couple of days. Another spring storm will start to make things windy on Monday, with gusts becoming strong to damaging on Tuesday. Critical fire conditions and blowing dust will be the main concerns, particularly for the eastern half of the state. Northern and western areas will get some light precipitation, with snow mainly for the northern mountains. Some snow and blowing snow could impact areas in far northeast New Mexico on Tuesday night as the storm exits the region and a backdoor cold front pushes through. Conditions will remain breezy for eastern New Mexico through the end of the week, with wind speeds picking up on Friday as another system makes its way through intermountain west. With conditions looking to remain dry for the majority of the state, fire weather and blowing dust will once again be the main concerns for the extended forecast. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Tuesday) Issued at 329 AM MDT Mon Mar 17 2025 Southwest flow aloft will begin to strengthen over NM today as an upper level trough moves onshore over the west coast. Meanwhile, a surface low will deepen to around 998 mb in eastern CO. High temperatures are forecast to climb another 8-16 degrees today, placing them 4 to 17 degrees above 1991-2020 averages. Models depict thin, high, cirrostratus clouds continuing to cross, but they are expected to be thin enough, and high temperatures warm enough, for the atmosphere to mix the strengthening flow aloft to the surface. Southwest wind gusts this afternoon will probably peak around 30-45 mph, with the strongest gust locally near and east of Las Vegas. Humidities will also drop into the single digits most places with fire weather concerns along and east of the central mountain chain, and around Gallup. Wind speeds will weaken with sunset this evening only to strengthen again over the higher terrain late tonight and especially Tuesday, when damaging winds are expected along and east of the central mountain chain and possibly as far west as the central valley. The aforementioned upper level trough will pass mainly to the north of NM Tuesday steering the polar jet stream over southern and eastern areas, and driving a strong Pacific cold front through the state. Models are in fairly good agreement that the core of the jet aloft and the Pacific cold front will cross the eastern half of the forecast area during peak heating Tuesday afternoon. The combination of mechanical mixing and buoyant mixing underneath a 700 mb speed max of 50-75 KT will result in surface winds gusting near and potentially over 70 mph along and east of the central mountain chain. With this forecast package we will upgrade our High Wind Watch to a Warning for much of the east, but will leave it a Watch in the central valley since the front will cross the valley before peak heating and models are in less agreement on the strength of the flow aloft there. Western areas can also expect wind gusts in the 45-55 mph range on Tuesday. Humidities will be low enough for fire weather concerns over central and western areas both today and Tuesday. Blowing dust will become widespread in the central valleys and over eastern areas on Tuesday with brownout conditions again likely from Tucumcari, Clovis, and Portales southwestward to Roswell. && .LONG TERM... (Tuesday night through Sunday) Issued at 329 AM MDT Mon Mar 17 2025 The strongest winds will begin to diminish on Tuesday night as the storm system makes its way east into the Great Plains. However as the H5 low deepens to 500 mb heights near 540 dm and begins to track towards central Kansas, winds will shift from west to northwest and still be packing quite a punch. Winds will then shift northerly in eastern New Mexico as a backdoor cold front pushes through on Wednesday morning. With strong 700mb winds of 60 to 65 kts over head, areas in far northeastern New Mexico (nearest to the low pressure center on Wednesday morning) will still be seeing strong gusts of 50 mph or greater. Some lingering moisture on the backside of the storm system looks to create some snow showers over the Sangre De Cristo Mountains and parts of far northeast New Mexico until just around sunrise on Wednesday. The combination of snow and strong winds may contribute to areas of blowing snow, leading to reduced visibility and creating a hazardous morning commute. With the passage of the fronts, notched temperatures down a tad closer to lower end of guidance. Overall a chillier start to the spring continues as temperatures will be 10 to 15 degrees below average for this time of year. The upper level pattern looks to be pretty progressive for the rest of the long term period with some brief ridging on Thursday followed by a series of shortwave troughs to end the week. Temperatures begin to rebound to near normal for Thursday as pressure heights rise. Meanwhile, a near 1000 mb surface low will develop over southeast Colorado during the afternoon, creating some breezy SW winds over much of eastern New Mexico. The shortwave trough on Friday looks to bring another round of gusty winds to the area, particularly to the nuisance windy areas in the central highlands. It will also push through another backdoor front through northeast New Mexico, but downsloping winds should still heat temperatures up on Friday to above average for southeastern parts of the state. There is still some model uncertainty on the timing and strength of this system, which could lead to different solutions on how strong the winds may get. For now, winds look to be around Wind Advisory criteria and the system looks to be pretty dry with precipitation only for the far northern mountains near the Colorado border. To end the week, another shortwave trough crossing through the central Rockies on Saturday looks to bring one more round of breezy westerlies to the region. As a result of these windy conditions throughout the week and continued low relative humidities, the main concerns will be elevated fire weather conditions and patchy areas of blowing dust. && .AVIATION... (06Z TAFS) Issued at 1139 PM MDT Sun Mar 16 2025 VFR conditions are forecast for the next 24 hours, but southwest winds will become strong this afternoon with gusts reaching 30-40 KT in many locations, and potentially up to 45 KT from RTN to LVS. Winds will weaken with sunset Monday evening, only to strengthen again over the mountains after midnight Monday night. Gusts to 50 KT are likely at KSRR before sunrise Tuesday morning. Then, damaging winds are expected across central and eastern parts of the forecast area on Tuesday with widespread blowing dust as a strong Pacific cold front crosses. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 329 AM MDT Mon Mar 17 2025 High temperatures will climb again today reaching 4-17 degrees above 1991-2020 averages. Wind gusts today will generally peak in the 30- 45 mph range, and humidities will plummet into the single digits most places, resulting in widespread critical fire weather conditions east of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and along and east of the Sandia and Manzano Mountains. The Gallup area can also expect winds to gust up to 40 mph today with critical fire weather conditions, but starting a few hours later than areas further east. An upper level trough will pass mainly to the north of NM Tuesday steering a strong southwesterly jet stream over southern and eastern parts of the fire weather forecast area with wind gusts potentially around 70 mph there, where widespread critical to extremely critical fire weather conditions are again expected. An exception will probably be the West Central Basin and Range, where critical fire weather conditions will be relegated to the eastern fringe of that zone Tuesday because of lighter winds over central and western parts of the zone. A few inches of snow will be possible mainly in the mountains near the CO border Tuesday and Tuesday night. Winds will weaken slowly Tuesday night. North wind gusts up to 60 mph are likely with a backdoor cold front over far northeast areas late Tuesday night, then up to 50 mph there through much of Wednesday. Lighter winds are forecast elsewhere Wednesday with cooler temperatures areawide.
