.SYNOPSIS...The next weather system drops into the western United
States over the weekend, bringing increased winds, chances for
rain showers, and light mountain snowfall to the area. After a
brief break, another low pressure system will move through the
area on Wednesday and Thursday.

.SHORT TERM...through Sunday.

Satellite imagery shows a band of mid-to-high clouds drifting
southeast through Inyo County and the southern Great Basin. These
clouds will continue to work their way southeast through southern
Nevada, southeastern California, and northwestern Arizona throughout
the day. Outside of these clouds, weather will be relatively
uneventful today with temperatures a few degrees cooler than normal.

A low pressure system will move through the Desert Southwest over
the weekend bringing gusty northerly winds and increased
precipitation chances for portions of the area. Lincoln and Mohave
counties have the best chances at seeing precipitation, with a 30 to
50% chance of precipitation late Saturday night into Sunday. While
we will see a relative increase in moisture, the drier insider
slider trajectory of this system means that what precipitation we do
get is expected to be on the lighter side. The panhandle of Lincoln
County and the higher terrain of Mohave, where precipitation chances
are the greatest, will likely see up to 0.25" of QPF, with a "worst
case" scenario of 0.50" to 0.75". The Spring Mountains will find
themselves in a similar situation. However, there is a higher
probability of not having any precipitation than the higher terrain
of Mohave County and the panhandle of Lincoln County. Elsewhere,
across the lower elevations and valleys of southern Nevada,
northwestern Arizona, and southeastern/east central California, the
"worst case" scenario when it comes to precipitation is 0.01" to
0.10", which would result in slippery wet roads and ruined car
washes.

This system will also bring a reinforcing shot of cooler air to the
region, which will allow these cooler than normal temperatures to
stick around through the end of next week. These colder temperatures
also mean falling snow levels. Snow levels will go from 6 to 7 kft
on Saturday to 5 to 6 kft on Sunday. However, due to the lack of
sufficient moisture, impactful snow accumulations are not expected.
In the Spring Mountains, Kyle and Lee Canyons will likely see
somewhere between 0.1" and 3.0" of snow with locally higher amounts
in the peaks of the mountains. The "worst case" for Kyle and Lee
Canyons is 4" to 5" of snow. In the Eastern Sierra, 1" to 3" of snow
is likely between 7 kft and 9.5 kft, with a worst case scenario of
up to 4" of snow. Locally higher snow totals are expected above
9,500 feet in the Eastern Sierra.

In addition to a slight increase in precipitation chances and cooler
temperatures, this low pressure system will also be accompanied by
increasing winds. Westerly winds will pick up across the Mojave
Desert on Saturday ahead of the trough axis. The strongest of these
winds are expected in western San Bernardino County, with gusts peak
wind gusts in the 30 to 40 mph range. Isolated 40+ mph wind gusts
will be possible in the higher terrain of San Bernardino County, but
are not widespread enough to warrant the issuance of a wind
advisory. The post frontal northwesterly winds will pack a bit more
of a punch on Sunday than the prefrontal southwesterly winds that
preceded them. Esmeralda County, Nye County, the Colorado River
Valley, and eastern San Bernardino County are all looking at
between a 60% to 75% chance of wind gusts of 40 mph or greater
from Sunday into early Monday morning.

.LONG TERM...Monday through Thursday.

By Monday, the low pressure system should be over the southern
end of the Rockies. However, north-south surface pressure and
temperature gradients should still be in place, along with
northerly flow aloft on the back side of the low. All these
factors point toward strong northerly winds continuing, and MOS
guidance suggests that north winds in the Colorado River Valley
could be stronger on Monday than on Sunday. Meanwhile, the next
low should be entering British Columbia and/or the Pacific
Northwest. Models are split on how to handle this second low
through Wednesday and Thursday, with about half of the ensemble
members showing a more progressive open trough zipping eastward
with high pressure building in from the Pacific behind it, while
the other half show the low closing off and peeling southward
toward our area. If the first solution is closer to reality, winds
would settle down and temperatures would start to rise. If the
second solution verifies, another round of strong northerly winds
would be likely, and temperatures would decrease again. The
forecast falls in between these two extremes, and model trends
will be important.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Light winds generally less than 7 knots
will occur today through Saturday with easterly components late
morning and afternoon and southwest this evening and overnight. BKN-
OVC clouds 15-20 kft this evening through early Saturday morning
ahead of a weather system dropping into Southern Nevada Saturday
night and Sunday bringing north winds gusting at least 25-30 knots
by Sunday afternoon.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Winds less than 10 knots can be expected across the
region today through Saturday for most areas. The exception will be
around KDAG after 14z Saturday where west winds gusting 20-25 knots
are expected. BKN-OVC clouds 15-20 kft will spread across the region
this afternoon through Saturday morning ahead of a weather system
dropping down from the Pacific Northwest. This will bring widespread
northwest or north winds gusting 25-35 knots to the region Sunday.
