Area forecast discussion, Oct 27, 12:40 AM PDT, 1 minute before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1240 AM PDT Sun Oct 27 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Expect one more day of warm and dry conditions today under high pressure. Low pressure from the Gulf of Alaska will then bring increased winds, much cooler temperatures, and chances for rain and mountain snow on Monday and Tuesday. Quieter weather and below normal temperatures are likely Wednesday through Friday. && .SHORT TERM...through Tuesday night. Midnight satellite loop showed high clouds from the remnants of Hurricane Kristy blanketing the region. Surface obs showed light winds and temperatures and dewpoints within a few degrees of 24 hours ago. The main story is still the sharp pattern change coming Monday and Tuesday. The high clouds crossing our area this morning showed the northern periphery of the stubborn high pressure ridge which has been hanging out over Sonora for several days, bringing dry and warm weather to the Mojave Desert. Meanwhile, strong low pressure was clearly visible just off the coast of British Columbia, with an attendant trough stretching south to well off the central California coast. The first shortwave trough will reach our area later today, causing winds to begin picking up. There could also be enough lift associated with this wave to wring out some sprinkles/very light showers roughly along and southeast of I-15 this evening through early Monday morning. Winds will continue to increase mainly over the higher terrain through Monday morning, becoming more widespread in the afternoon as the atmosphere couples. Models still show very high confidence in advisory-level winds for much of San Bernardino, Clark, and Mohave counties Monday afternoon through Monday night, so hoisted a Wind Advisory for these areas. As the main trough axis reaches our area late Monday, precip chances will increase in areas along and northwest of I-15, spreading to northern and central Mohave county Tuesday. Snow levels will crash as cold air pours in, leading to an inch or two of snow in the higher terrain from the Sierra Nevada across to Lincoln county, with a dusting possible in the mountains of Clark county. Speaking of cold air, temperatures will also crash, with highs Tuesday 15 to 25 degrees colder than Sunday. .LONG TERM...Wednesday through Saturday. Period starts out with Nevada/California between systems Wednesday. Early week trough will be exiting east through the central Rockies while we turn our attention to upstream trough moving into the Pac NW. Based the 12Z ensemble solutions, I'd say there is higher than average confidence that a closed low will develop over the area this coming weekend. That pattern would maintain below normal temperatures into the beginning of November. There is more uncertainty regarding precipitation chances as a more inland trajectory would tend to be a drier scenario. While, a wetter solution would need the trough to dig slightly further westward which would allow the system to tap into moisture off the Pacific. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Light winds of 4-8 knots persist through the morning hours. By mid-afternoon, southwest breezes develop and continue through the night. Initially these southwest winds will have gusts of 15-20 knots, but as time progresses, they'll increase to 20-30 knots. Beyond 06z, the chances of 20+ knot gusts are over 50%. For clouds, expecting BKN-OVC conditions at ~20kft to last through 12z Monday, with a SCT-BKN deck around 15kft developing this afternoon and continuing through the night. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Light and diurnal winds expected across the area through at least the morning hours. By the afternoon, KDAG and the Las Vegas Valley sites will see westerly or southwesterly breezes develop with gusts gradually increasing as time goes on. KVGT is the most uncertain of these sites, as southwest breezes may retreat just south of it during the evening. In this case, KVGT would favor an ESE direction until the SW winds return at some point overnight. At KBIH and the Colorado River Valley sites, typical diurnal winds with occasional gusts up to ~15 knots possible this afternoon. In terms of cloud cover, widespread high clouds throughout the TAF period with SCT-BKN mid-level clouds developing this afternoon/evening. KBIH should clear out between 06z-12z Monday. && .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating procedures. && SHORT TERM...Morgan LONG TERM...Pierce AVIATION...Woods For more forecast information...see us on our webpage: https://weather.gov/lasvegas or follow us on Facebook and Twitter
