What forecasters said that day
The local office's own words before this wind advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS Las Vegas, NV wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind advisory went out at Oct 16, 4:23 AM PDT, 8 hours 33 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, Oct 16, 4:23 AM PDT, 8 hours 33 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 423 AM PDT Wed Oct 16 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Another couple days of above-average temperatures before a pattern change drastically cools the region and introduces chances of precipitation for our eastern zones. Gusty south-southwest winds will pick up ahead of the cold front today and Thursday, with gusty north winds taking over Friday into the weekend. Temperatures will moderate and winds will calm for the latter half of the weekend heading into the start of next week. && .SHORT TERM...Today and Thursday. A longwave trough will drop from the Gulf of Alaska across the western CONUS today and tomorrow, which will help push a weak closed low eastward out of Arizona. A shortwave embedded in this longwave trough will push a weak axis through the southern Great Basin this afternoon, which will increase southerly winds across the area (25- 35 mph) and bring slight precipitation chances across Esmeralda, southern Nye, and Lincoln counties. Rain that falls in the southern Great Basin will be light, as dry low levels will likely evaporate most, if not all, rain that falls. This shortwave will also result in a drop in temperatures, leaving today as the last day of the forecast period with temperatures above 90 degrees for Las Vegas. South-southwest pre-frontal winds will further increase on Thursday with gusts between 30 and 40 mph with a brief break in southern Great Basin precipitation, with Thursday being the final day of the forecast period with above-average temperatures. .LONG TERM...Thursday night through next Wednesday. A cold system currently digging along the British Columbia Coast will bring a big change to our weather with the primary impacts of gusty north winds and dramatic cooling Thursday evening through Friday as it spins into a closed low and dives over southern Nevada on its way to Arizona. Gusty north winds will likely occur across much of our forecast area late Thursday evening into Friday morning with current guidance suggesting widespread gusts of 40-55 mph. The latest model ensembles now keep the track of the low a little farther east than 24 hours ago which has reduced precipitation chances over Clark County especially Friday afternoon through Saturday. The best potential for showers will still be over Lincoln/northeast Clark and northern Mohave counties Thursday night and Friday night as the center of the system and an associated cold front quickly move overhead. QPF amounts generally 0.25-0.50 inches are forecast northern/eastern Lincoln and northern Mohave counties and diminish fairly quickly over Clark and southern Mohave counties, which is indicated by the 75th and 90th percentiles. The precipitation type will change over to snow in Lincoln/Clark County mountains Friday with snow levels lowering to 5000'-5500', and 6000'-6500' in northern Mohave County. Most probable snow accumulation outcomes continue to show upwards of 3" on the Wilson Creek Range and White Rock Mountains of northeast Lincoln County, with an 1" or less for Pioche and the Highway 93 corridor north to White Pine County. Only a dusting expected in the Spring Mountains. The first freeze of the season for northern Owens Valley, central Nye, and Lincoln counties looks likely Thursday night/Friday morning and again Friday night/Saturday morning. As such, a Freeze Watch has been issued for Thursday night into Friday morning for these zones. After that, the low is forecast to circulate over Arizona Friday night through Saturday night which may brush Mohave County with chances of showers while the rest of the area remain under cool northerly breezes, then lift across the Four Corners region into the Rockies on Sunday leaving our region under dry northwest flow and temperatures climbing 3-5 degrees. A ridge of high pressure will build over the region Monday through Wednesday with light winds and temperatures climbing a few degrees each and returning to near or slightly above normal. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Winds will remain relatively light, 10 knots or less, and will follow typical diurnal directional trends through the morning hours. Southeasterly winds will pick up this afternoon with sustained speeds of at least 10 knots and 15 to 20 knot wind gusts expected. These breezier southeasterly winds will continue into the early evening before decreasing and swinging around to the southwest. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Similar to KLAS, KVGT and KHND will see light and diurnal winds pick up and swing to the south-southeast this afternoon. These breezier southeasterly winds will drop off during the evening hours with winds maintaining a southerly direction into the overnight hours. Winds at KBIH will remain light, following typical diurnal trends through later this afternoon when winds will pick up and swing around to the northwest. These breezier northwesterly winds decrease in magnitude during the evening hours with winds continuing to maintain a northwesterly direction through the overnight hours. KDAG will favor a westerly direction with 20 to 25 knot wind gusts picking up later this afternoon. Light southerly to light and variable winds will continue through the morning hours for KEED and KIFP with 15 to 20 knot southerly wind gusts picking up during the afternoon. These breezier winds will continue into the evening hours when wind gusts will drop off while winds continue to maintain a more southerly direction. && .FIRE WEATHER...South-southwest winds with gusts between 25 and 35 mph across the area today will combine with dry conditions and cured vegetation to increase fire danger in southern Nevada. Afternoon relative humidity values will range from 10 to 20% with overnight recoveries exceeding 45%. As such, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11am to 8pm PDT today. Wind gusts will increase further on Thursday, though a moisture increase will result in afternoon RH above 20%. && .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating procedures. && SHORT TERM...Soulat LONG TERM...Adair AVIATION...Stessman For more forecast information...see us on our webpage: https://weather.gov/lasvegas or follow us on Facebook and Twitter
