.SYNOPSIS...A cooling trend will occur this week with more
significant cooling by late in the week and into the weekend as a
weather system pushes through the region. This system will also
result in increased winds and a chance for valley rain and high
elevation mountain snow Friday into Saturday. High chances for the
first freeze for Cochise, Graham, and Greenlee Counties on
Saturday and Sunday mornings.

.DISCUSSION...This afternoon's satellite imagery showed low lying
cloud layer with a few radar echoes of virga moving northeasterly.
The latest convective allowing models showed showers and an
isolated storm developing late this afternoon and into the late
night. There are less than 15 percent chances for storm or shower
development as the cold front has morphed into a stationary
boundary along the Arizona and New Mexico border.

The next four days will be a change in weather for the region. A
weather system will be impacting the area starting tomorrow to
bring winds, chances for showers and mountain snow, and colder
temperatures. To start, a dry trough will pass over the region
tomorrow to bring mainly breezy southerly to southwesterly winds.
The wind prone areas could experience sustained winds around 25
mph where most of the region experiencing 15 to 20 mph.

Behind the trough, a low pressure center will drop into the Great
Basin by Friday. The pressure gradient is very tight and create
windy conditions across the region. Most of the areas will likely
experience 25 mph sustained with the wind prone areas close to 30
mph. The gusts can be high up to 40 to 45 mph for most areas.
There is even a gust potential to exceed 50 mph for the eastern
counties which is at least 50% chance. This results in blowing
dust issues, especially along the I-10 corridor in Cochise County
and other dust prone areas. This system will bring chances for
showers, thunderstorms, and high elevation mountain snow. The EFI
shows a weak signal for instability for the western part of the
region. This is the better location for thunderstorms as the cold
front passes through western Pima and portions of Pinal Counties
before hitting the Sky Islands. There could be a few embedded
storms as the front moves through. Although, the storm rainfall
and snow amounts are very low and be more wetting the ground. Snow
levels will be around 7,000 feet and White Mountains having the
higher chances for the dusting of snow by Friday night.

On Saturday, the weather system will start to exit and leaving
behind colder morning temperatures. The Sulphur Springs Valley and
other low lying areas near washes and rivers in Cochise, Graham,
and Greenlee Counties have chances for freezing temperatures. The
latest guidance has the Willcox Playa a 30% and a 75% chance for
32 degrees or colder for Saturday and Sunday, respectively. With
that in mind, it will be one of the first freezes for the season
and thus, a Freeze Watch has been issued for those low lying
locations in Cochise, Graham, Santa Cruz, and Greenlee Counties
Saturday and Sunday morning. Otherwise, the other locations will
see one of the cooler days of October this weekend.

As always, high pressure will start to creep back into the region
starting early next week and temperatures will be back on the
rise. At this time, the forecasted temperatures will be above
seasonal normals and potentially at records.

.AVIATION...Valid through 18/00Z.
SCT-BKN clouds at 10k-13k ft AGL with another SCT-BKN layer at
18-20K moving into the region by 17/06Z through the end of the
forecast period. A slight chance of -SHRA east of a KALK to KSAD
line until 17/10z. SLY/SELY SFC wind at 10-15 kts until 17/02Z
and being less than 12 kts. After 17/16Z, SLY/SWLY winds at 12-18
kts with gusts to 30 kts until the late evening. Aviation

.FIRE WEATHER...There will be a slight chance of sprinkles and/or
light showers in the higher terrain of Cochise, Graham and Greenlee
counties this afternoon and into the late night. Otherwise, dry
conditions will prevail through Thursday. 20-foot wind speeds will
generally be 15 mph or less today, with increasing south-
southwest winds at 15-20 mph and gusts around 30 mph on Thursday.
A storm system will move into the region Friday into Saturday.
This will result in much cooler temperatures, a chance of showers
and thunderstorms (and high elevation snow showers), as well as
strong and gusty southwest to west winds. While wind speeds will
exceed fire weather thresholds on Friday, minimum RH values will
be above thresholds in the 20-40 percent range. Behind this
system, warmer and drier conditions are expected by early next
week.
