.SYNOPSIS...Somewhat colder Saturday morning including freezing
temperatures around the Tucson metro. A strong weather system is
forecast Sunday into early Monday with strong winds, much lower snow
levels, and a widespread hard freeze possible for most of the area
Monday night and Tuesday night.

.DISCUSSION...Well, last night the clouds ruined a perfectly good
temperature forecast, but we will give it another go tonight with the
potential for cloud cover to impact how quickly it cools off this
evening. Given this system is not as moist and the flow out of the
NW is fairly brisk, will go with the idea of some evening clouds and
clearing thereafter to allow temperatures to drop to near forecast
values. The lighter winds and lower dewpoints will help as well.
Other than that, not much excitement for Saturday.

Sunday, the upper trough is still on track and fairly deep as it
approaches the area. Blended guidance is coming into better
agreement and narrowing the temporal range of the precipitation with
the focus on later Sunday afternoon into the first half of the night
for much of the area. The initial impact from this system will be
fairly strong winds, especially in the area east of I-19 and south of
I-10 where wind advisory criteria looks like it will be met across
parts of this area. Given the wind direction and level of the top of
the mixed layer (inversion just above mountain peak) this is a good
setup for strong winds in the lee of the Huachuca mountains affecting
parts of the Sierra Vista area. Gusts well into the 50s is not out of
the question Sunday afternoon that area. Given the potential, we
decided to go with a wind advisory in the aforementioned larger area
for late Sunday morning into Sunday evening.

Then the precipitation arrives Sunday afternoon from NW to SE with a
band of moderate to briefly heavy precipitation in the vicinity of
the passing cold front. Snow levels will be low with this storm,
starting out in the 4,500-5,000 range then dropping to 2,500-3,000 ft
or so by midnight. As is typically the case with these systems, when
the snow level gets low enough to affect the valleys the
precipitation is winding down. That said, it still looks like there
will be enough overlap later Sunday night for the potential of a
period of mixed precip or flurries in the metro with snow showers
over the northern and eastern foothills and a light coating higher
areas east of about Vail. The higher valleys like Sonoita east to the
NM border may get a decent coating out of all this.

The QPF (amount of liquid precipitation forecast) is pretty much
unchanged from the previous forecast and running a bit more than the
last storm. For the mountains this looks like 3-4 inches atop Mt
Lemmon and up to 9 inches over the higher terrain of the White
Mountains. Not enough for winter storm warnings and just dipping into
the advisory level for the White Mountains. At this time will not
raise any headlines for the snow given the limited impact.

Then, the concern/attention turns to the cold air mass settling over
the region behind the storm. Not only will it be cold but it will be
dry as well with dewpoints easily dropping into the teens along with
clear skies. That all adds up to rather cold nights. Just how cold
it gets Monday morning will significantly depend on how quickly it
clears out behind the storm which lowers confidence in the
temperature forecast for that morning. Much of the region will be
below freezing including the Tucson area, however if it clears out as
it appears to at this time we may well dip into hard freeze
territory in the metro area Monday morning. Tuesday morning is
expected to be even colder with some very cold temperatures across
southern Arizona including likely hard freeze conditions across a
large part of the lower deserts including much of Tucson. Updated
probabilities are highlighted below.

Then a bit milder Wednesday and dry. Ensemble guidance really locks
in on the idea of a trough of some depth/width settling across the
western U.S. There is a lot of variability in the details of
individual systems moving through this large scale trough both in
timing and strength so not much confidence in details. The idea of a
colder and wetter than normal period from Thursday through next
weekend is a good bet at this time.

.FIRE WEATHER...A system will pass to the north for just a few
flurries possible over the White Mountains tonight into early
Saturday. A stronger system is expected later Sunday through Monday
with strong gusty winds, cold temperatures, and more precipitation.
This system should have lower snow levels with accumulating snows
above 4-5000 ft and the possibility of a dusting as low as 3000 ft.
Very cold early next week. Potential for another storm of some
fashion late next week.
