Wintry precipitation will begin to spread into the forecast
area this evening from central KS. Initially, precipitation
will be mainly tied to the north/west side of the upper 850 hPa
low where strong frontogenesis develops; however, as the upper
trough continues to dig southward, surface low pressure will
elongate and deepen across the Southern Plains, allowing
precipitation to blossom ahead and in the near vicinity to the
surface low. Our forecast area will be in a bit of an odd
transitional spot as the 850 low/original wrap-around
precipitation pulls sharply to the northeast out of our area
Friday morning, and the secondary band on the back side of the
surface low develops mainly to our south and east. Portions of
northern KS will see the most precipitation with the initial
round this evening and tonight, and could pick up several inches
of accumulation quickly between 9PM and midnight. Note that in
this type of banded scenario, a small shift in the heaviest band
could increase or reduce snowfall totals by several inches over
only a few tens of miles. The HREF currently shows 1+ inch per
hour snowfall rates just over the border into Nebraska, so it's
possible that snowfall amounts could be higher than depicted in
the current forecast along/very near the KS/NE border. HREF
probabilities of greater than 4 inches of accumulated snowfall
reach as high as 60 percent right along the border, which is the
highest amount currently represented in the gridded forecast
and winter weather advisory.

Further to the south, forcing will be much less and more broad,
leading to generally light precipitation amounts and gradual
accumulation. Precipitation type and efficiency of any snow
accumulation will also be in question as the 850 hPa 0 degree C
gradient sits near I-70 this evening. Fortunately, temperatures
within this warmer sector have reached the mid to upper 30s
this afternoon, and the entire column appears to cool at a
uniform rate as very cold air sweeps in behind the low. This
will lead to only a brief time window where freezing rain will
be possible, and the probability of ice accumulations greater
than a light glaze are less than 20 percent. Any freezing rain
that does occur would be mainly east of US Hwy 75 and near/just
south of I-70.

As cold air moves quickly in from the west/northwest,
precipitation type will switch to all snow for the entire area.
Not much moisture will be left to work with, but a few
hundredths of precipitation could be squeezed out, especially
if the surface low takes a slightly more northern or slightly
slower track. With increasing snow-to-liquid ratios in the
increasingly cold air, this could result in up to an inch of
snow accumulation during the morning hours Friday. Any rain/
Snowbelt that lingers from today will freeze very quickly, and
the combination of the quick freeze and light snow may result
in hazardous travel nearly area-wide on untreated roads and
elevated surfaces.

Dangerously cold temperatures are the highest confidence
portion of the forecast as frigid Canadian air surges into the
central CONUS. Northwest flow will linger ad nausea while the
surface low slowly spins across the Great Lakes region,
resulting in wind chills in the -20 to -30 range multiple nights
in a row. The sun might try to peek out a couple of times
Saturday, but it's not going to help. The cold crescendos on
Sunday when temperatures will struggle to make it above zero
(Fahrenheit) for a high temperature, which would be the first
occurrence since February of 2021. We've maintained the wind
chill watch for now just to avoid headline confusion, but
reaching wind chill warning criteria is a slam dunk for the
entire area this weekend into early next week.

We might see a little reprieve Wednesday/Thursday as the main upper
trough allowing cold air to surge in moves east, but another cold
push follows behind it by the end of next week. High temperatures
Wed/Thu could (25th percentile) reach the low 30s, which would
feel downright balmy after the weekend that's ahead.

continue for the next 2 hours at KTOP and KFOE. An arctic from

After 10Z expect just occasional show showers through day break.
Currently ceilings are 1000-1400 feet and the ceilings will
gradually lower to IFR conditions through the early morning

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of central Kansas,

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Wintry precipitation is expected this evening through Friday
morning as another winter storm system passes through the area.
Light to moderate snow ranging from 1 to 4 inches is forecast
north of a line from Abilene to Wamego to Holton. South of this
line generally less than 1 inch of snow is expected. However,
areas along the Kansas Turnpike and Interstate 70 over east
central Kansas could see some a light glaze of ice accumulate
mainly late this evening as light freezing rain develops before
changing to snow. As this system moves through, winds will change
to the northwest with gusts above 30 mph. This could cause some
areas to see blowing snow.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

Much colder air will move into the region on Friday and will be
long lasting through early next week. Expect bitterly cold wind
