Hot temperatures will persist through most of the week with Tuesday through Thursday expected to be the hottest. Dry conditions will persist outside of isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms. More seasonable temperatures will return by the weekend. && .UPDATE... Only a few minor changes were made to the forecast with this update, including tweaking the smoke forecast and aligning temperatures with current trends. Will need to see how smoke affects temperatures through the day today, as highs may be impacted by a few degrees where smoke is thickest. Ludwig && .AVIATION... 22/18Z TAF Period Note: The NWS Great Falls Weather Forecast Office manages the following TAFs: KCTB, KHVR, KGTF, KLWT, KHLN, KBZN, KEKS and KWYS. All TAFs include periods of MVFR conditions due to low visibility in haze/smoke in association with wildfires. Mountain obscuration due to haze/smoke should be expected. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued due to hot temperatures, low minimum relative humidity and gusty winds. Fire weather concerns increase through Thursday as the upper level ridge over the Northern Rockies flattens (Tuesday and Wednesday) and eventually breaks down (Thursday). At this time, Thursday is the most concerning day as the ridge breaks down and an associated Pacific front sweeps east over Southwest through North Central Montana; however, well above normal to near record high temperatures, low afternoon relative humidity, and marginal wind speeds on Monday through Wednesday present at least elevated concerns. These elevated concerns are especially true along and west of the I-15 corridor over of the plains of Central and North Central Montana where southwest to west winds are breeziest amongst the aforementioned hot and dry conditions. - Moldan/Fogleman && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 457 AM MDT Mon Jul 22 2024/ Today... Wildfire smoke, primarily from Canada, will impact most of Montana east of the divide leading to poor air quality for many locations. Some isolated dry thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening, particularly through Beaverhead and Madison counties. The main concern will be gusty and erratic winds as well as lightning which may cause concerns for starting fires. The main limiting factor will be the smoke layer aloft which may inhibit the convective potential. Tuesday through Thursday... Confidence is high that well above normal high temperatures combined with warmer overnight lows will create a dangerous situation for portions of north-central and central Montana through the middle of the week. Given the expected heat risk and impacts, the heat advisory was expanded to include more locations such as Great Falls, Havre, and Helena. It was also expanded time-wise to account for the full duration of the expected heatwave. When considering highlights, the wildfire smoke ends up being the biggest wild card. The thick layer of smoke aloft has managed to tamper down highs the last couple days by anywhere from two to five degrees. But it has also kept us warmer by a couple degrees during the overnight hours. This means that while highs may ultimately end up being a couple degrees lower than currently forecasted, depending on how thick the smoke ends up being, overnight lows may be warmer which will contribute to poor recovery and stress on those without A/C. Thus the risk of heat- related impacts has maintained despite minor changes in the numerical predictions. That being said, when debating between a heat advisory or an excessive heat watch there is still a little too much uncertainty. Model agreement remains high regarding all the necessary ingredients for a heatwave. But the RAP smoke model has gone back and forth on where the thickest smoke concentrations will be and the HRRR smoke model does not go out far enough with this update to encompass the full heatwave. Thus, this ended up being a situation where there is high confidence in heat advisory criteria being met but the crossover to excessive heat is still uncertain. For now, the biggest concern will be in Blaine county but future updates will need to address what impacts are expected with the smoke and whether or not confidence is high enough to upgrade to a warning. Otherwise, the next concern during this time period will be the potential for critical fire weather conditions. With how hot and dry things have been over the past few weeks, there is a general high fire danger that has persisted for a while. But winds have remained light which have largely kept most of the fire weather concerns at bay. This changes for Thursday when the ridge breaks down, leading to gusty west/southwest winds. Combined with low relative humidity the fire weather watch remains on track as near- critical to critical fire weather conditions are possible through much of north-central and central Montana. Friday through next Tuesday... Ensemble clusters largely favor troughing over the Northern Rockies through at least Saturday, which will help bring some, albeit limited, relief to the hot conditions as of late. Additionally, monsoon moisture lifting north and east from the Desert Southwest will bring chances for showers and thunderstorms, most notably to areas along and south of the MT-200 during the afternoon and evening hours each day. In the Day 8 and Day 9 ensembles there is a hinting suggestion that a ridge might start to build over the western CONUS again towards the middle of next week.
