 - Multiple periods of gusty winds across the plains beginning
   Thursday night, with the most potent period looking to be Saturday
   into Saturday night.

 - A period of mostly mountain snow late weekend into early next
   week, with a transition back to near average temperatures across the
   region.

Not too many adjustments made to the forecast this morning. I
warmed up afternoon temperatures slightly for parts of Central MT
due to model guidance hinting at greater warming ahead of the
boundary. The Havre/Blaine County area have a low chance for an
isolated light snow shower today. -Wilson

.DISCUSSION...
/Issued 835 AM MST Wed Dec 4 2024/

 - Meteorological Overview:

As has been the case the past few days, the Northern Rockies
continues to sit under a northwesterly flow aloft on the eastern
periphery of an upper level ridge. Although ridging aloft will
remain in place through the rest of the week, a system well off to
the northeast in Canada will result in a cooler day over the plains
today before trending milder again toward Thursday and Friday. This
will result in a period of low clouds and potentially fog in the
Havre area and vicinity through Thursday morning. Aside from a
period of gusty winds along the Rocky Mountain Front late
Thursday night into Friday, the remainder of the work week is
looking relatively benign.

The overall setup gets more complicated toward this weekend. A weak
wave passing through the northwesterly flow Friday will set the
stage for a more potent wave aloft arriving late Saturday night into
Sunday. The initial concern with this weekend system will be for at
least one period of gusty winds over the plains. Then attention
turns toward snow during the day Sunday into Sunday night, mostly
in and around terrain.

A northerly to northwesterly flow aloft looks to remain in wake of
the upper level disturbance Monday and Tuesday. Low end chances
for precipitation will remain early next week, with temperatures
largely residing near normal.

 - Forecast Confidence & Scenarios:

Gusty winds Thursday into Friday:

Probabilistic guidance gives around a 30% chance for a 58 mph gust
around Cut Bank during this timeframe. Hence, I am electing to
hold off from a High Wind Watch at this time. This event will
largely be pressure gradient driven, which doesnt look to be
overly strong at this time. Trends will continue to be monitored
for this timeframe.

Gusty winds Saturday into Sunday:

Confidence for strong winds and gusts is much higher for this
timeframe. The chance for sustained winds of 50 mph between
Browning and Cut Bank is between 50 and 60%. Additionally, the
chance for a 75 mph gust in this corridor is also between 50 and
60%.

Further southeast between the Great Falls and Stanford areas the
chance for a 58 mph gust is at least 30%, and peaks around 60% in
Great Falls and Geyser. Given this time range is still quite a ways
out, no High Wind Watches are being considered at this time.

Mainly Mountain Snow Sunday into early next week:

Northerly upslope areas in the Little Belts and vicinity are most
favored for accumulating snow Sunday into early next week. The
chance for 6 inches of snow at Kings Hill Pass Sunday through Monday
night is roughly 50%. -AM

Expect VFR conditions to prevail over the next 24 hours, though
some low stratus/VCFG will likely develop at KCTB overnight
tonight as a cold front stalls out near the area. With the shallow
cold front present overnight at KCTB, be alert for some LLWS.
