Above seasonal average temperatures along with periods of strong gusty winds and mountain snow are expected this weekend. A robust cold front brings widespread snowfall and cold temperatures Monday into Tuesday. Temperatures quickly rebound to above seasonal averages Wednesday. Unsettled weather with mainly mountain snow continue through the rest of the week. && .Update... Morning update has been published, with the primary change being to warm temperatures for today by 2-4 degrees and decrease Minimum Relative Humidity values by 5-10% given a relatively mild and dry start to the day already. Otherwise the High Wind Warning for areas along the Rocky Mountain Front and Montana Hwy 200 corridor remains on track, with several locations along the Montana Hwy 200 corridor having recently gusted to between 60-70 mph over the past 2 hours. Winds will remain strong to very strong and gusty across these areas through the afternoon hours before gradually decreasing this evening below High Wind criteria, but still remaining breezy and gusty through the overnight hours tonight. - Moldan && .AVIATION... 940 AM MST Sat Feb 24 2024 (24/18Z TAF Period) VFR conditions are expected to prevail through the next 24 hours at terminals across Southwest through North Central Montana; however, low-VFR CIGS will obscure mountains, especially along the Continental Divide throughout the 2418/2518 TAF period. Strong and gusty winds will also persist over the plains of Central and North Central Montana and in the north-south orientated valleys for much of the TAF period, but a slight reduction in wind speeds/gusts is generally expected between 00-12z Sunday at these locations. Instances of low level wind shear and/or mountain wave turbulence will be a concern through Sunday night across all terminals. - Moldan Refer to weather.gov/zlc for more detailed regional aviation weather and hazard information. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 431 AM MST Sat Feb 24 2024/ Northwesterly flow aloft will continue to bring a series of disturbances this weekend. This morning a vorticity maximum aloft along with 50-60kt 700mb winds have created high winds mainly along the Rocky Mountian Front and the Highway 200 corridor this morning. The High Wind Warning remains in effect this morning, and extended the Central Montana zones until this evening since wind profiles look favorable for gusty winds to linger into the afternoon. Along with this, the first wave of snow arrives mainly along the Rocky Mountain Front and Central MT mountains this morning. Although the bulk of the snow will remain in the higher terrain of the Rocky Mountains, Marias Pass could see around 3-5" of snow through early Sunday morning. Breezy winds linger Saturday night into early Sunday morning before the second wave of high winds return Sunday through Monday. Beginning Sunday to Monday, a dynamic upper level trough will deepen along the Pacific Northwest Coast. Upper level winds aloft increase again, with some areas across the Rocky Mountain Front and Central MT reaching winds of 70-75kts at 700mb. Probabilistic guidance shows about an 80-90% of 64kts (74mph) right along the Rocky Mountain Front. The Cut bank area has around a 50% probability for these winds. Locations along the Highway 200 corridor and Southwest ridgetops and north to south facing valleys have a 60-80% chance of reaching 48kts (55mph). The Bear Paws region and other locations along the Hi-Line region have a 50-60% of 48kts (55mph) gusts. They were therefore added to the High Wind Watch from Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon. This watch will likely be reevaluated in the afternoon package to decide which zones need to be upgraded to a warning. This upper level trough also brings a robust weather system from Canada. Good Pacific moisture advects into the region. This will keep mainly the Rocky Mountain Front in a prolonged period of snowfall. Ahead of the Canadian low, some lee surface troughing Sunday morning will bring some snow mainly to the Rocky Mountain Front. The current Winter Storm Watch in effect got pushed up slightly earlier to start at 5am Sunday morning to better align with the timing of the heavier snowfall. Current guidance shows Marias Pass at a 70% of exceeding 12" of snow through late Monday night. As the Canadian low pressure system tacks eastwards along the Montana/Canadian border, snow becomes more widespread Monday morning along a robust Canadian cold front moving south through the state. Due to the timing of the cold front Monday, the current Winter Storm Watch for the Southwest MT mountain zones got pushed back to start at 11pm Sunday night. A strong pressure gradient along with a strong temperature gradient sets up along the front. This indicates the potential of some frontogenesis bands to form. This combined with gusty winds could lead to a potential snow squall set up which will continue to be monitored in the coming days. Behind the cold front, temperatures plunge below seasonable averages for Tuesday. Most areas of the CWA will experience Tuesday morning low temperatures in the single digits, with North Central MT and the Hi-Line dropping below freezing. Temperatures struggle to recover Tuesday afternoon, only increasing into the mid teens low 20s. Breezy conditions look to return tp the Rocky Mountain Front and Central MT late Tuesday into Wednesday. This will help rebound temperatures back to above seasonal averages Wednesday afternoon. However, the potential for blowing snow will be monitored along the Rocky Mountain Front before the warm temperatures return that afternoon. After the upper level trough moves exits eastwards Wednesday, slight upper level ridging takes place. However, daily mountain snow persists through the week. Cluster Analysis does come into an agreement of another upper level trough coming through the West Coast next weekend. However, there are uncertainties in the location and timing of this trough.
