There is still a wide range in temperatures across north-central MT, ranging from the single digits and teens at lower elevations (<3000 ft) in Liberty, Hill and Blaine counties to the mid 40s across the higher plains and foothills adjacent to the Rocky Mtn Front and Little Belts. Made some minor adjustments to minimum temperatures in these areas in line with trends this evening with no significant updates to the forecast needed otherwise this evening. Hoenisch && .DISCUSSION... /Issued 215 PM MST Thu Dec 5 2024/ - Meteorological Overview: Upper level ridging over the area today and Friday will break down Saturday and Sunday as a strong upper level trough begins to push into the area. As this ridge breaks down, strong upper level winds will combine with an increasingly strong pressure gradient across the Rocky Mountain Front to bring strong, gusty winds to a large portion of the area. Current NBM data suggests that there is at least a 50% chance for wind gusts over 60 mph for most of the usually windier locations along the Rocky Mountain Front and the North Slopes of the Little Belt and Snowy Mountains, with wind gusts in excess of 90 mph possible in some of the windier locations along the Rocky Mountain Front. As the axis of the upper level trough pushes through on Sunday, a surface cold front will push through the area, bringing in a colder air mass along with a few areas of snow to areas on the plains and some of the higher elevations in Central and Southwestern Montana, particularly the Highwood and Little Belt Mountains. In the wake of this trough, our upper level flow will become more westerly, allowing for a bit of a cooler and more active weather pattern to set up for next week. Ludwig - Forecast Confidence & Scenarios: Winds Friday into Sunday: Multiple periods of gusty to strong winds will exist Friday into Sunday, mostly across the plains. The first periods looks to be Friday evening through early Saturday morning along the Rocky Mountain Front and adjacent plains. The chance for sustained winds of 50 mph and gusts of 75 mph in the Browning area is around 50% during this timeframe. After a brief lull Saturday morning, another period of strong winds looks to develop Saturday afternoon and most notably Saturday evening along the Rocky Mountain Front. The chance for a 70 mph gust in Cut Bank Saturday evening is around 55%. Areas further southeast along the MT-200 corridor in Cascade and Judith Basin counties have around a 50-60% chance for a 60 mph gust Saturday afternoon into Sunday. Given that the probabilities for these winds has reached the 50% threshold, I have elected to expand the High Wind Watch to these areas. Worth noting is that as this system pulls away Sunday, the chance for a 60 mph gust in Judith Basin and eastern portions of Fergus county is around 50%. Mountain Snow: Snow will develop from northwest to southeast across the region Saturday into Monday.
