Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Great Falls MT 1000 AM MST Fri Nov 15 2024 Aviation Section Updated. .KEY MESSAGES... - Mountain snow with lower elevation rain/wintry mix arrives this afternoon across Southwest and Central MT, and continues through Saturday morning. - Another round of snow on Sunday through Tuesday morning across the Continental Divide, Southwest and Central MT. - Strong winds arrive again late Saturday through Sunday, particularly along the Rocky Mountain Front and the Montana Highway 200 corridor. && .UPDATE... /Issued 853 AM MST Fri Nov 15 2024/ The main changes with the update this morning were to add portions of Southwest and Central Montana into the Winter Weather Advisory from this afternoon through tomorrow morning. Although snow in these areas may not initially stick to roads, the combination of reduced visibility and the fact that roads look to eventually see snow stick should result in minor impacts. Confidence in these impacts isn't quite high enough in the Gallatin Valley just yet to warrant a Winter Weather Advisory, but trends in guidance will be monitored through the remainder of the morning and early afternoon for any additional changes. Small tweaks to the chance for precipitation and precipitation amounts were made, otherwise no other mentionable changes were made at this time. -AM && .DISCUSSION... /Issued 853 AM MST Fri Nov 15 2024/ - Meteorological Overview: An upper-level trough currently in place with a low pressure system developing over the Western U.S. will bring mountain snow and lower elevation rain starting this afternoon. With temperatures dropping below freezing Saturday morning, snow will mix in with rain. This will allow some light snow to accumulate at lower elevations Saturday morning. Weak ridging follows behind this system exiting Saturday morning. Stronger winds aloft move in late Saturday night into Sunday, allowing for stronger winds to develop along the Rocky Mountain Front and along the Montana Highway 200 corridor. Breezy conditions are likely everywhere else. Another upper-level trough moves through late Sunday to early Tuesday, which will bring another round of snow to the Continental Divide, Southwest, and Central MT. Temperatures fall back below normal Monday through Wednesday. Ridging returns once again, which will bring slightly warmer temperatures, and keep the region mostly dry. Though, some upper-air disturbances may try to bring some light precipitation towards the end of next week. - Forecast Confidence & Scenarios: There is high confidence in snow arriving this afternoon across the Southwest and Central MT. There is good agreement in short term guidance keeping the northern edge of precipitation along Montana Highway 87 through Blaine county. The bulk of the snow will be along the mountains, where there is good agreement for 2-4" on mountain passes and up to 6-8" along the higher terrain. Zones 315 and 322 were added to a Winter Weather advisory due to MacDonald's Pass and the Elkhorns/Boulder Mountains having a 20-40% of receiving 4" of snow. Lower elevations can expect some light snow accumulating as temperatures cool down Saturday morning. The one area where snowfall amounts remains uncertain is the Helena Valley. The main reason is temperatures varies in model guidance for Friday evening. Some models have temperatures drop to freezing quicker, allowing higher snow accumulations than other models with a warmer solution. Due to this, a Winter Weather Advisory was issued there in the slight chance they get the higher accumulations of 3"(30% possible). Stronger winds aloft will allow strong winds to develop, mainly along the Rocky Mountain Front and along the Highway 200 corridor. There's a 60-90% chance for 55mph winds and a 30-70% chance for 75mph winds along the Rocky Mountain Front. There's a 40-70% chance for 55mph winds along the Montana Highway 200 corridor. Some of the medium to longer term deterministic struggle to get these 55mph winds to the surface. With not having 80% confidence for high winds, I have left these zones as a watch for now. though will continue to monitor trends. For Sunday's though Tuesday morning's system, there's a 40-70% for 4" of snow across the Divide and Southwest MT mountains. So far the lower elevations have very light accumulations, but if stronger colder air moves in, these amounts may increase slightly. -Wilson && .AVIATION... 15/18Z TAF Period The primary concern this TAF period will be for a period of snow across Southwest and Central Montana, starting this afternoon, largely ending by 16/12Z.
