Snow will move back into Southwestern Montana later this evening, with generally light amounts outside of the Madison and Gallatin Mountains. After this system exists on Sunday, Monday will see winds increase ahead of our next system, which will bring widespread light snow to the plains, with higher amounts along the Rocky Mountain Front and the Little Belt Mountains. && .UPDATE... An upper-level air disturbance passing through the region will continue to bring scattered to widespread precipitation across the Continental Divide, Southwest MT, and the Big/Little Belts Mountains. Most of the snow will stay near and in the mountains. However, snow levels falling down to 3,500ft Sunday morning can mix down light snow accumulations to the Southwest Valleys. A slightly unstable atmosphere will allow some snow showers to be locally more intense through 11pm. This can cause quick reductions in visibility and quick accumulations of light snow on roadways. Temperatures falling below freezing overnight can also cause wet/slushy pavements to become slippery. Overnight, light snow will continue before winding down Sunday morning. The current Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 8am MST Sunday morning, with additional accumulations of up to 3" on mountian passes possible. With most of the impactful snowfall ending early Sunday morning, the advisory may end earlier with future forecast updates. -Wilson && .AVIATION... 03/06Z TAF Period VFR conditions will prevail across all terminals except for the Southwestern Montana Terminals (KBZN, KEKS, KWYS) during this TAF period. For the KHLN, KGTF, KLWT, KCTB, and KHVR terminals the only aviation concern during this TAF period is breezy winds with gusts up to 22 kts primarily only in the middle of this TAF period. Between now and at least 03/12Z there will be snow at least intermittently affecting the Southwestern Montana Terminals. The greatest impact from the snow will be at the KWYS and KEKS terminals where visibility will be reduced to IFR levels at times between now and 03/14Z. At the KWYS terminal there will be LIFR ceilings at times between now and 03/10Z. There is a 20% chance for snow at the KEKS and KBZN terminals between 03/12Z and 03/17Z. There will be mountain obscuration in Southwestern Montana from now through about 03/18Z due to snow and low ceilings. -IG Refer to weather.gov/zlc for more detailed regional aviation weather and hazard information. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 605 PM MDT Sat Nov 2 2024/ Key Points: -Light snow over Southwestern Montana today -Windy on Monday along the Rocky Mountain Front -Potential for widespread, mainly light, snow Tuesday with higher amounts in the mountains Short Term (through Monday)... Clouds continue to build across Montana today as an upper level trough begins to push into the Northern Rockies. Late morning radar imagery was showing some light returns, which has mainly been virga (precipitation that evaporates before reaching the ground), but as moisture continues to surge into the area we’ll see these returns gradually increase in coverage and intensity as precip gradually begins to reach the ground by this evening, mainly along the Continental Divide, along with areas south of I-90 before spreading further north to as far as the Little Belt Mountains. While any snow will generally be confined to elevations above 6000 feet during the day today, snow levels should gradually decrease as cooler air works in, and will fall to as low as 3500 feet by sunrise Sunday. For most areas, any snow accumulation will generally be an inch or less, though the higher terrain of the Madison and Gallatin Mountains could see up to a half foot or so. After sunrise, expect any lingering precipitation to quickly dissipate as drier air works in, though some of the highest terrain may see some flurries linger through the day. As we head into the day on Monday, our next upper level trough will help to form a lee trough just east of the Rocky Mountain Front through the day on Monday. This will produce a fairly breezy day along the Rocky Mountain Front and adjacent plains, though there remains some uncertainty as to just how windy it gets. Model soundings indicate some degree of warm air advection on Monday, which may reduce just how much we are able to mix the strong winds down to the surface, which may keep winds a bit under 60 mph away from the immediate Rocky Mountain Front. With that said, the setup does look at least slightly favorable for mountain wave development, which could force those winds to the surface even with the warm air advection. With that said, I do not have enough confidence to make any changes to the existing High Wind Watches at this time. Extended (Tuesday through next Saturday)... No matter how windy Monday winds up being, the lee trough will break off and move eastward on Tuesday, which will result in strong cold air advection on the back side of this system, and with the development of an upper level low early Tuesday morning, we will have sufficient moisture to produce some snow, especially along the Rocky Mountain Front and on the north slopes of the Little Belt and Snowy Mountains. Right now, models are indicating that the heaviest snowfall will generally be in the Little Belts and possibly the Bears Paw Mountains, with most locations on the plains seeing at least a few snowflakes mixing in at times. My main forecast concern at this point is that models sometimes underdo snowfall on the north slopes of the Little Belts in these northerly flow regimes, though for now it is a bit early to make any major adjustments beyond the NBM due to how things can evolve over the next 24 to 48 hours, especially as temperature forecasts remain above freezing. Behind this system, upper level ridging should begin to build in for the second half of the week, which will result in warmer temperatures along with generally drier and possibly breezy conditions.
