A series of weak disturbances are forecast to move across the
Northern Rockies, continuing the periods of light mountain snow,
breezy westerly winds, and warmer than normal temperatures. Stronger
winds are forecast for Friday, and then again on Sunday, mainly
across the Rocky Mountain Front and adjacent plains. By early next
week, another more significant weather system will bring cooler and
wetter conditions to much of the Treasure State.

Radar imagery as of 8:15 PM continues to show light precipitation
activity across northern Beaverhead county. The latest forecast

VFR conditions are mostly expected to continue across North Central
(KCTB KHVR), Central (KLWT KGTF KHLN), and Southwest (KBZN KEKS)
Montana through at least 23/06Z.

However, through 12Z, areas of MVFR fog just east of KHVR may drift
into the terminal area at times, and isolated showers may bring
brief periods of MVFR ceilings to Southwest Montana.

Overall, though, a west-northwest flow aloft will continue moderate
mountain wave turbulence, along with periods of low level wind shear
over the plains of North Central and Central Montana. Moisture in

Predominately zonal flow aloft will prevail, keeping things
relatively breezy and abnormally warm through the remainder of the
day and into the latter end of the week. Many locations will
continue to trend 5 to 10 degrees above normal. Models are in fairly
good agreement that upper-level ridging will persist with some weak
disturbances propagating through, resulting in minor instances of
light snowfall restricted to the mountains of the Rocky Mountain
Front and south and east of the West Yellowstone vicinity.

The low pressure off the coast of Washington, responsible for the
aforementioned weak disturbances, will transit eastward across
Montana late Friday, bringing again light, yet measurable snow
across the Rocky Mountain Front. Unstable flow aloft will make way
to the surface, resulting in localized breezy to occasionally gusty
winds steadily increasing in magnitude through Thursday and even
more so Friday, particularly along the Rocky Montana Front and much
of the plains. Because of this, winds have become the focal point of
discussion though the weekend. Latest probabilistic guidance depicts
a greater than 70% chance of at least 48 knot (55 mph) winds along
the Front and adjacent plains extending eastward into the Cut Bank
vicinity on Friday. Meanwhile, probabilistic guidance showcases at
least a 50% chance of 41 knot (45 mph) winds along wind-prone
locations of the MT Hwy 200 Corridor between Great Falls and
Lewistown. Conditions will most definitely be breezy to occasionally
gusty, but cannot justify a High Wind highlight given the marginal
probabilities across the plains. That said, opted to issue a High
Wind Watch for the Rocky Mountain Front and adjacent plains, valid
18z Friday through 12z Saturday, as probabilistic guidance suggests
at least a 50% chance of 64 knot (74 mph) gusts.

The weekend looks even more impressive with regards to windy
conditions. A low pressure trough extends southward from the Gulf of
Alaska Sunday, resulting in even stronger winds across the Rocky
Mountain Front and along some of the more wind-prone locations
across the plains. Probabilistic guidance once again showcases at
least a 50% chance of 64 knot (74 mph) gusts along the Rocky
Mountain Front extending eastward with a 25% chance within the Cut
Bank vicinity. Across the plains, guidance depicts at least a 50%
chance of 48 knots (55 mph), particularly along the MT Hwy 200
Corridor and the Madison Valley. Though this will likely be the
windiest period across the region, have opted to hold off on issuing
any High Wind highlights and allow future shifts to further
evaluate, given the event is still several days out.

While stronger winds remain to be the focus, it is important to note
that the aforementioned low pressure trough will bring periods of
snow to the Rocky Mountain Front as well, with a 60 to 80% chance of
at least 4 inches snow accumulation. While this is generally not a
significant impact along the Front, the conjunction of stronger
winds will pose the risk of blowing and drifting snow, leading to
significant travel concerns. It will become important to reevaluate
this period closer to date with Winter Weather highlights in mind.

Early next work week, the aforementioned low will propagate along
the Montana-Canada border as the positively-tilted trough deepens
well into the Baja California. This is forecast to propagate a
strong cold front from Canada southward into much of Montana with
afternoon temperatures falling 5 to 10 degrees below seasonal
average across much of the Treasure State. Latest deterministic
models showcase this will be a drastic, yet short-lived cooldown
between early Tuesday and late Wednesday, with models acknowledging
an abrupt rebound to above normal temperatures thereafter. That
said, there are some discrepancies to what some model ensemble
clusters are suggesting with regards to the timing of the deepening
trough. The uncertainty, as a result, places further uncertainty on
exactly how cold it may get or how much snow may fall. As noted by
the previous shift, the latest National Blend of Models (NBM)
depicts the trough to exit the region just after Tuesday. That said,
with the conflicting scenarios, future shifts will need to evaluate
the situation closer to date. - Pierce
