.SYNOPSIS...A break in the active weather will bring warming
temperatures to the region through Friday. Strong winds can be
expected from Friday afternoon through Saturday evening across
much of the state. A cold front will shift south and east across
the region Saturday evening into Sunday, bringing snow levels to
valley floors for much of the state and much colder temperatures.

.SHORT TERM (Through 12z Saturday)...Weak high pressure and
calm conditions are noted this afternoon with warmer temperatures
today compared to yesterday. Further warming tomorrow and again
Friday is anticipated as a south to southwest flow regime sets up
over Utah in advance of our next impactful weather system from the
west.
A wind advisory across western Utah resulting from increasing strong
southerly winds will be the kicker for this upcoming (potential) list
of weather hazards through the weekend. Wind gusts upwards of 60
mph are possible Thursday along with the potential for blowing
dust from Thursday afternoon into Friday afternoon. Winds in these
areas in particular show little signs of a decreasing trend
through Saturday evening, so low in fact that over 95%
probabilities of 50 mph gusts exist throughout much western
Millard and Juab counties while Milford and Delta indicate a 60%
to 90% chance for greater than 50 mph gusts Friday. As a result,
High Wind Watches have been issued from Friday morning through
Saturday evening for these areas, as well as for southwest Utah.
Increasing southwest winds are expected to be widespread
across the state by Friday with the help of a 50 kt low level jet;
further increasing throughout the day into Saturday. As a
result, additional headlines for wind may be warranted. Southwest
Wyoming is also expected to be rather gusty Friday; though high wind
criteria is not forecast to be met in this area and winds will be
generally parallel to I-80.
Arriving early Friday, a decaying atmospheric river will be able
to bring moisture to northern Utah and southwest Wyoming in the
form of rain for the valleys and snow in the mountains. The
northern mountains, in particular Beaver Mountain and the Bear
River Range are expected to see the heaviest snow totals from this
system. A fair amount of uncertainty in forecast amounts are noted
for these areas, and range from a low end amount of 3 inches, high
end amount to 20 inches with a forecast of 12 inches of new snow
forecast just on Friday alone. A Winter Storm Watch has been
issued beginning Friday morning for the Wasatch Mountains north of
I-80 resulting from these higher snow amounts.
A good amount of rainfall is also expected Friday for some and
most likely for those along the ID/UT border. That stated, there
is a zone of uncertainty from approx Bountiful to Brigham City
where precipitation amounts are less confident on Friday. North of
Brigham City, we expect heavier precip totals and south of
Bountiful we are expecting less. In between, however, we may see
areas with heavier precip and areas of much less or no precip.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z Saturday)...Strong south to southwest flow
from Friday will continue into Saturday for all of southwest Wyoming
and Utah and through Saturday for most of Utah. A baroclinic zone is
forecast to track into northern Utah Saturday. While timing is
uncertain, confidence is high in a change from valley rain to snow,
as the boundary will bring much cooler conditions. In the warm
sector east of that boundary, there is strong model agreement in a
climatological outlier wind event continuing Saturday.
Saturday morning will feature windy conditions throughout southwest
Wyoming and Utah. A 250 mb jet with winds exceeding 100 knots will
be established, with 700 mb winds exceeding 50 knots. With windy
conditions forecast through Friday, not much of a decrease is
forecast through the overnight into Saturday. Winds might decrease
slightly into Saturday morning with lack of daytime warming, but
models are in good agreement of the strongest winds aloft pushing in
for the start of the weekend. The strongest flow is likely for
portions of western Utah, including Iron, Beaver, and Millard
counties. This is where model guidance, such as the ECMWF Extreme
Forecast Index, highlights a climatologically unusual event.
National Blend of Models probability for Wind Advisory criteria
sustained winds and gusts is near or at 100% Saturday for those
locations. Probability for High Wind Warning criteria sustained
winds and gusts is 90% or higher for those locations. Stronger winds
will expand further east Saturday for locations like Lake Powell,
northward into Emery County where sustained winds and gusts look
likely to at least hit Wind Advisory criteria.
There is more uncertainty further north, as winds will drop off once
a cold front pushes through. Timing for the front to push through
northern Utah could range from late Saturday morning to sometime
into the evening. Gusty south to southwest winds, into Wind Advisory
criteria for some locations, will last until that boundary pushes
through. Forcing will be sufficient for valley rain and mountain
snow ahead of the front for southwest Wyoming and northern Utah.
Orographic enhancement will bring the most snow accumulation for
mountain locations with upslope flow from the south or southwest. A
fast transition from valley rain to snow is forecast with the cold
front. Strong cold air advection is forecast with the boundary, as
temperatures in the 40s and 50s dip into the teens and 20s into
Sunday. There will be more confidence in snowfall accumulation with
hi-resolution guidance, but snowfall will likely be the greatest in
the northern mountains, where 1-2 feet with locally higher totals
are forecast. Valley snowfall accumulation of 1-4 inches with
locally higher totals is forecast.
Snow will last into Sunday, especially if the front has later timing
Saturday. Snow showers will likely last through much of the day in
the mountains. Drier conditions are likely Monday, but ensembles are
in agreement on a storm system to track into southwest Wyoming and
Utah during the week.

throughout the period. Skies will remain mostly clear. Winds will
predominantly be light and southerly with a brief window of light
