.SYNOPSIS...An active and cold weather pattern will bring a
series of storm systems to the region into next weekend.
&&
.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z/5AM Wednesday)...The low pressure system
that brought snowfall to our area over the past couple of days
continues to shift further eastward across New Mexico as seen on
recent satellite imagery. Behind it, a strong ridge is currently
located just off of the west coast, leaving our forecast area in
overall northerly flow. as this ridge shifts eastward, it will
weaken, but will still leave us in a subsident regime for a brief
period before a strong trough swings quickly southward from the
Gulf of Alaska by Tuesday.
As far as what's happening right now, despite the aforementioned
subsidence, there are still some lingering showers over the
northern and central mountains, and over the Tooele Valley and
western Salt Lake Valley. These showers appear to be taking
advantage of the remnant moisture and instability in the low
levels. Showers across the mountains are likely to continue
through the afternoon, but with an overall decreasing trend. Aside
from clouds hugging the mountains, expect a clearing trend for
most locations through the evening. Regarding the showers over
Tooele/Salt Lake Valleys, there is some uncertainty with how long
they will last, given the often fickle nature of lake-effect
snowfall. Low level moisture will continue to decrease, and mid-
level lapse rates are expected to stabilize over the next few
hours, likely cutting off lake-effect showers by roughly 7-9AM.
There is a small chance, however, that these showers could
continue through the morning.
Minimum temperatures on Tuesday will be similarly cold to this
morning, with the main difference being a lack of winds across
southern Utah for Tuesday morning. Wednesday morning lows aren't
expected to be as cold.
The incoming trough from the Gulf of Alaska will quickly weaken
the ridge, bringing a chance for snowfall to our area. The main
dynamics with this system will scrape across northern Utah, thus
the highest snowfall amounts are expected in said area. This
system appears to have a decent vort max and will also replenish
the deep column moisture we just saw with the last system. Mean
flow will be westerly to northwesterly, and can thus expect
orographically favored areas to receive more snowfall.
Additionally, 700-mb flow will likely be around 40-50kts across
the north, which will help with orographic forcing.
There won't be much of a break between this first wave and the
next, thus Winter Storm Watches are in effect for Tuesday morning
through Thursday morning, based on snow amounts for the first two
waves.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z/5AM Wednesday)...With one wave on its way out
of the region at the beginning of the forecast period, another
follows quickly on its heels. This second wave is expected to come
in much stronger, with model guidance supporting a stout baroclinic
zone moving from north to south across the forecast area. For the
mountains, a brief break in precipitation is anticipated during the
morning on Wednesday before moisture begins streaming in again,
ramping up round 2 of snowfall. A steady period of light to moderate
snowfall is anticipated in the northern Utah mountains through the
first half of the day as weak warm advection spreads over the
region. As the aforementioned baroclinic zone pushes into the state,
precipitation intensity in the mountains and in the valleys will
increase rapidly as this potential snow band sets up. Models are
generally in good agreement of this frontal band moving through the
Wasatch Front during the afternoon and early evening hours on
Wednesday, bringing potential for significant impacts to the evening
commute from the Cache Valley through the southern Wasatch Front,
especially given the cold antecedent temperatures. Current snowfall
probabilities show anywhere from a 30 to 80 percent chance of seeing
4 inches or greater of snow along the Wasatch Front and Cache Valley
for a 24-hour period starting Wednesday afternoon, with the higher
end probabilities favoring the Cache Valley and northern Wasatch
Front. For the mountains of northern Utah, 12 to 18 inches of
snowfall are likely to fall with this system through the passage of
the front. For the central and southern Utah mountains, 5 to 10
inches and 3 to 8 inches are anticipated, respectively.
The action does not stop there. Cold, moist post-frontal
northwesterly flow will keep low density snow falling in the
mountains of northern Utah through the overnight hours into
Thursday. In fact, some deterministic guidance is showing a subtle
trailing wave moving through the region early Thursday morning,
which could reinvigorate higher intensity snowfall over the terrain
and in the valleys. For the remainder of Thursday and through
Friday, we remain in a synoptic flow pattern that places a jet
overhead, subtle shortwave disturbances translating through the
region, and moist upslope flow across northern Utah, bringing
potential for limited breaks in precipitation across the northern
Utah mountains, if at all. Heading through the weekend, there is
indication amongst guidance of yet another trough moving through the
region, but this time the trough looks to be sourced from the PacNW
region instead of interior Canada. What this means for this
potential system is a round of high intensity, high density snowfall
for the mountains and valley areas of Utah. Current guidance places
the highest likelihood of seeing precipitation across the northern
half of the area, with respectable PoPs (20-40%) across southern
Utah. As is the case with storms in the day 6/7 period, there are
still some details to work out. Nonetheless, the storm train looks
to continue and bring potential for high snow and snow water
equivalent numbers through early next week.

.AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions will prevail over the KSLC
terminal through the valid TAF period, with low clouds lingering
around the airfield and nearby terrain through much of the morning
hours. Cloud bases will linger around 5kft AGL, creating local
mountain obscuration through ~18Z. Otherwise, northerly winds will
prevail over the airfield through the day.
Rest of Utah and Southwest Wyoming...Low hanging clouds across Utah
and southwest Wyoming will bring areas of MVFR to IFR conditions
through the first half of the morning. After ~16/17Z, low clouds
will begin clearing across much of the area. Mountainous terrain is
likely to maintain lower level cloud cover, generating rather
widespread mountain obscuration, particularly across central Utah.
