.SYNOPSIS...Breezy conditions and high based convection will
develop Wednesday ahead of a potent winter storm that will bring
significant mountain snow and much colder temperatures Thursday
into the weekend.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Thursday)...Seeing high pressure over
Utah and southwest Wyoming this afternoon with an embedded closed
low centered over northern Arizona. Due to the presence of this
low, seeing some showers develop over northeastern Arizona, with
some getting close to the Utah/Arizona border. Would not be
surprised to see a shower or two move into southeastern portions
of the forecast area later this afternoon or into the early
evening, but impacts will be minimal. Otherwise, looking at mostly
clear skies over the remainder of the area with just a bit of
cumulus over the higher terrain with maxes running 10-15F above
seasonal normals.

Will see a storm system start to make its way onshore along the
Pacific Northwest coast tonight into Wednesday morning, the one
that will soon bring a significant pattern change to Utah and
southwest Wyoming. As it does so, it will split, with the weaker
wave moving into the Great Basin Wednesday afternoon. Ahead of the
features, southwest winds will pick up across the area, becoming
breezy at times. Not anticipating any sort of flow that would
necessitate any wind headlines, but the breezy conditions will
combine with very dry conditions over western Utah to produce
critical fire weather conditions, and have turned the going Fire
Weather Watch into a Red Flag Warning.

With the Great Basin branch of the trough approaching, will see an
increase in moisture and instability over the area in addition to
the breezy winds. As a result, will see increasing coverage of
showers and storms, primarily over the higher terrain of northern
and central Utah, during the afternoon and early evening. Lower
levels will still be quite dry, so the main threat with any storms
that develop will be gusty microburst winds. As the first trough
noses in late Wednesday into Thursday, precipitation will become
more widespread, more wet in nature, and focused over northern
portions of the forecast area. The associated initial weak
boundary will bring modest cooling, but snow levels will stay on
the high side, over 9000 feet.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z Thursday)...

Key messages:

* High confidence is maintained in a substantial pattern change with
  winter-like system bringing the coldest air of the season thus
  far. With the exception of some lower elevation and urban areas
  along the Wasatch Front and lower Washington County, many
  locations will see a period of temperatures at or below freezing
  Saturday morning.
* High (medium) confidence in wetting precipitation >=0.1" water
  (>=0.5" water) across the forecast area Thursday and Friday. This
  will still largely fall as valley rain and mountain snow.
* High confidence in accumulating mountain snow (>=1") above 6500
  feet, high confidence for more impactful (>=6") accumulations
  above 7500 feet, and medium confidence in more signficiant (>=12")
  above 9000 feet.
* Medium confidence in a period of easterly downslope/canyon winds
  across the Wasatch Front Saturday morning, with less confidence on
  exact magnitudes and duration.

Overall the long term forecast has changed minimally this afternoon,
with high confidence on a winter-like system bringing a quick demise
to the ongoing mild pattern. On Thursday morning an initial weaker
front will be pushing through the forecast area as a broad trough
begins to amplify into the Great Basin. Given this boundary and
increasing diffluence ahead of a strong jet streak associated with
the amplifying trough, will see precipitation chances remain
elevated through the day. Cold air infiltration will be more minimal
with this initial front, so while surface temperatures will start to
cool, snow levels by in large will remain above 8500-9000 feet or
so. Still, given strong moist deep west to southwesterly flow ahead
of the deepening trough, will likely see some decent precipitation
rates at orographically favored high terrain. Additionally, given
the strong amplifying trough, will see favorable conditions for low
level momentum transfer to yield pre-frontal gusts in the 30-45 mph
range or so, primarily across southern Utah along/south of the I-70
corridor.

The trough will then continue to amplify, with a much more
substantial cold front pushing southeastward through the forecast
region late Thursday evening on through midday Friday. This will
likely be the most impactful period, with the highest precipitation
rates as a whole as the front passes. Additionally, H7 temperatures
ahead of the front in the 0C to 4C range will quickly plunge to
around -5C to -8C behind the front as the trough settles in. This
will yield a corresponding rapid drop in snow levels following
frontal passage, with minimum snow levels expected somewhere in the
5500 to 6500 feet range at areas along and west/north of the I-15
and I-80 corridors, and more 6500 to 7500 feet range at areas
further into southeastern Utah. That said, given frontal timing near
diurnal minimum, will have potential for snow to mix in with rain
down to valley floors for a period, especially when driven by higher
precipitation rates. Further, GFS derived lake effect guidance shows
favorable (70% chance or greater) odds of lake effect/enhanced
precipitation downstream of the Great Salt Lake for a period Friday
morning after the frontal passage. Given the warm lake temperatures,
lake related instability will be high enough that rates could also
be high at times. Still, with very warm antecedent soil temperatures
from the mild fall so far, think the chances of accumulating valley
snow remains low, short of something like a very strong and focused
lake effect band setting up at the right time. Higher benches may
see at least some chance of light accumulations, mostly on elevated
surfaces. Accumulation potential further increases with height, with
confidence continuing to increase in amounts of around >=1" above
6500 feet, >=6" accumulations above 7500 feet, and potential for
>=12" above 9000 feet. Locally, event total accumulations of 18"-24"
will be possible for some favored locations such as the Upper
Cottonwoods and high Uintas. Those planning travel should at least
be prepared for potential winter driving conditions accordingly if
planning on going through high elevation routes and passes.

The trough will transition to a cutoff low somewhere near the
UT/NV/AZ border area late Friday, with the low then continuing
eastward through the weekend before beginning to eject back into the
northern stream early next week. This will result in elevated
precipitation chances lingering, especially along/east of the I-15
corridor and south of the I-80 corridor. While rates will generally
be lighter without the stronger forcing of the front, the flow
transitioning to east/southeasterly may yield a bit of an atypical
enhanced upslope component across high terrain favored in such a
pattern. With the low cutting off, stronger cold air advection will
also cease, allowing the airmass to begin to moderate and snow
levels to gradually increase. By Sunday, snow levels will likely
generally be back in excess of 7500 to 8000 feet across the majority
of the forecast area. As the trough ejects early next week,
precipitation chances become minimal areawide.

Given the aforementioned details, unsurprisingly day to day
highs/lows will also become quite cold. Currently in our mild
pattern, much of the area has seen temperatures 10F to 15F above
normal, if not more. Following the front, temperatures fall more to
the 10F to 20F below normal range, with only a slow moderation back
nearer to normal by early next week. Saturday morning still appears
to be the coldest of the forecast period. To that end, aside from
some lower elevation urban areas along the Wasatch Front and places
like lower Washington County, many locations will see a period of
temperatures at or below freezing. Those with any above ground
irrigation systems or other items/property similarly impacted by
subfreezing temperatures may want to consider winterizing or at
least protecting them. Additionally, vegetation and gardens
sensitive to cold temperatures will likely be impacted by this
system, so preparations should be made accordingly.

Finally, the potential for some sort of downslope/canyon enhanced
winds at typically prone areas across northern Utah is still noted
Saturday morning as the low continues to close off near the UT/NV/AZ
border. This setup will allow an easterly gradient to form, which at
a minimum will often lead to some enhancement of winds near canyon
mouths. The cold air advection component which can lead to stronger
events looks to be waning as the low closes off though, which may
limit how strong winds ultimately get. Additionally, dependent on
just where and how the low closes off (something guidance doesn't
always handle well), the window for where ingredients favorably
align may be brief overall. Still, this is something to continue to
monitor in the coming days as the event nears, with hope that high
resolution forecast models offer a better glimpse at the potential.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Northwesterly winds will transition to light,
southeasterly winds around 02-03z. Gusty southerly winds will begin
to increase after 17-18z Wednesday. There is a small threat of gusty
microburst winds Wednesday afternoon, particularly over nearby
higher terrain. VFR conditions will prevail.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Winds will remain relatively
light and terrain-driven through this evening and the overnight
hours, though by mid- Wednesday morning, winds will begin to
increase out of the south to southwest. Scattered showers are likely
to develop Wednesday afternoon, particularly over higher terrain.
These showers will be capable of producing gusty and erratic outflow
winds. There is a small chance that SE-UT could see a few showers
overnight tonight, including near KBCE and KHVE.

.FIRE WEATHER...A strong and cold storm system will start to
approach the area on Wednesday, bringing breezy conditions to much
of the area. Over western Utah, this will combine with very dry
conditions to produce areas of critical fire weather conditions.
High based convection will develop over portions of the state
Wednesday afternoon, resulting in some gusty and erratic winds
with the storms that develop. Precipitation, valley rain and
mountain snow, will increase during the day Thursday as the system
approaches. The period of heaviest precipitation will occur with
the associated strong cold front Thursday evening into early
Friday, with the very heavy rates dropping snow levels down as low
as 5000 with a chance of flakes developing even lower. The
mountains, particularly over northern Utah, are expected to see
significant snow accumulations with this system. Precipitation
will generally taper off from west to east on Friday, with
precipitation lingering through Saturday over portions of southern
and eastern Utah. The system will also bring much cooler
temperatures, with a decrease in afternoon highs between 20 and
35 degrees between Wednesday and Friday.
