.SYNOPSIS...An active and increasingly cold weather pattern will
bring a series of storm systems to the region through next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z/5AM Tuesday)...Recent radar echoes and
surface observations suggest a surface cold front is continuing
its movement into northern Utah, most recently located along a
line from western Juab County through the Salt Lake Valley and
into areas near Bear Lake. This front will continue southward and
eastward through the day today, producing snowfall across most
locations and breezy northwesterly to northerly winds. Let's dive
into the details.

A longwave trough is currently diving southward through the Great
Basin, with the trough axis still to our west as of early this
morning. With a strong northerly jet along the west coast, expect
this trough to continue digging south as it shifts eastward over
our forecast area during the day today. A couple of subtle
deformation zones will pass across northwest Utah and south-
central Utah this morning and afternoon, respectively. While
subtle, these features may briefly enhance snowfall rates and thus
snow amounts depending on how they actually pan out...especially
across south-central Utah.

Moving downwards in the column, our overall low-level flow will
shift from southwesterly to northwesterly along the frontal
passage, as we are already seeing in northwestern Utah. Northerly
gusts up to 40 mph are possible across the West Desert during
daylight hours, and similar gusts are expected in portions of
southern Utah heading into the evening and overnight hours. Areas
of blowing snow and reduced visibility will be possible, given
these gusts and recent snowfall.

In the mountains today, areas favored in northwesterly flow could
do quite well in terms of snowfall before a more northerly shift
late this evening. The highest snowfall rates are expected along
the frontal passage, but moisture and instability within the DGZ
will keep snowfall going through the day and into the overnight
hours, especially in those orographically-favored areas.

In the valleys, snowfall amounts have a greater degree of
uncertainty. While most areas in western to central Utah have been
seeing light to moderate snow showers for much of the night, the
Salt Lake Valley has actually seen dry conditions stemming from an
extended period of southerly winds mixing down via virga. This
downsloping has limited snowfall overnight, with snowfall reaching
the ground only recently as the front moves through the valley.
Overall in the valleys, the highest snowfall rates should be
along the front, however the wildcard of lake-enhancement or
lake-effect snowfall could produce other periods of heavier
snowfall along the central Wasatch Front. This chance is highest
after midnight tonight, with the most likely locations being the
western Salt Lake Valley to the Tooele Valley. While there's a
small chance lake-effect showers may continue into Monday morning,
a weak stable layer and decreasing low-level moisture may thwart
these chances, hopefully ending any snowfall by the Monday morning
commute.

As the cold air mass moves in, H7 temperatures will drop to
around -14C to -16C across the area. Combined with a shortwave
ridge and subsidence building in ahead of the next system,
minimum temperatures on Monday and Tuesday mornings will be quite
cold in some places. Generally, expect lows in the teens and
single digits across northern/central Utah valleys and the low-20s
in Lower Washington County.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z/5AM Tuesday)...A longwave trough will
remain in place across the CONUS through the long term
period. This will ensure an active pattern across the forecast area
as a series of shortwave troughs rotate through the mean flow.

The long term period begins with a shortwave trough temporarily
across the forecast area, which will yield the warmest day of the
period. Daytime temperatures look to warm into the mid 30s along the
Wasatch Front, and upper 30s to low 40s across the valleys of
southern Utah including lower Washington County. This will likely be
the only day within the forecast period where temperatures exceed
the freezing mark along the Wasatch Front.

A pair of progressive shortwave troughs and associated cold fronts
remain on tap for the midweek period. The initial wave will
primarily impact northern and central Utah Tuesday night into
early Wednesday pushing a strong cold front through the area. A band
of accumulating snow will accompany this boundary as it crosses the
Wasatch Front Tuesday evening, with orographic snowfall in the wake
of the band likely persisting through Tuesday night and perhaps
early Wednesday.

Model guidance has trended more progressive over the last 24 hours
with the second wave, which is scheduled to cross the area Wednesday
afternoon through Wednesday night. This wave is forecast to dig
deeper into the Great Basin, pushing the frontal band and
associated precipitation through the entire forecast area, with
orographic snowfall likely lingering behind the band along the
higher terrain east of I-15. With this band trending more
progressive, its looking unlikely accumulating snow reaches the St
George area as these tend to be short lived events which quickly end
as winds veer and become downslope dominant across this area.

Orographic snowfall will likely continue into Thursday within a
deep layer northwest flow. Uncertainty increases beyond Thursday
with respect to the timing and evolution of the next shortwave
trough expected to cross the region next weekend.  Some solutions
holding onto an Arctic intrusion into the Interior West, while the
majority of solutions favor an active but less severely cold
weekend. Either way, we'll continue to accumulate snow across at
least the higher terrain through the end of the long term period and
likely beyond.

.AVIATION...KSLC...IFR to LIFR conditions in light to moderate snow
will improve into the MVFR/VFR range between 14-15Z, with a 40%
chance this improvement is delayed until after 16Z. Temporary
reductions in visibility and ceilings can be expected through the
afternoon with passing snow showers. Winds will remain
predominantly northwesterly through the day and into tonight.
Accumulation on untreated surfaces of 2 to 3 inches is most likely
through 18Z with minimal accumulation expected thereafter.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Widespread IFR to LIFR
conditions within moderate to at times heavy snow will be the norm
this morning across the region. Gradual improvement can be expected
across southern Utah by late morning, while lower VIS/CIGS within
periods of snow will persist across northern and central Utah
throughout the day.
