(This evening through Saturday Night) Issued at 1257 PM CST Fri Jan 26 2024 So we finally got rid of the fog for the most part with still some isolated spots with some lower visibility attm. Seeing a few breaks in the OVC down south across Deep East Texas as well. Looking at water vapor imagery, abundant dry air aloft encompasses just about our entire region with the present cloud cover accompanying the lower levels of the atmosphere only. Water vapor imagery also shows well our next rain maker beginning its trek out of the Intermountain West and into the Southern Plains/Upper Red River Valley. Supporting lift downstream of the trough itself is resulting in widespread rain with embedded thunder across NW TX attm while we have seen an uptick in convection along the S LA Coast which is not necessarily associated with the upstream trough but due to sfc convergence along a stalled frontal boundary and a persistent upper shear axis remnant from our trough earlier this week. As the upper trough nears our region from the west this evening, will watch the right rear quadrant of a 120kt upper jet streak move across the Middle Red River Valley of NE TX/SE OK and SW AR that will only enhance upward forcing to produce widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms this evening and especially during the overnight hours. While there will not be any kind of low level warm sector return from S LA to speak of as sfc based instability appears to be non-existent, the 850mb theta-e analysis does show a returning elevated front moving north towards the I-20 Corridor of N LA overnight and therefore, this appears to be where the heaviest rainfall should fall near and south of this boundary tonight. This upstream trough is a fast mover so the window of moderate to heavy rainfall will be rather small overnight before we lose the upper level forcing quickly to our north and east Saturday Morning, deterministic 12z model QPF output has increased slightly for this event tonight compared to their output 24 hours ago. Have therefore beefed up rainfall amounts slightly across mainly the eastern half our our region with this event with one to two inches possible with isolated higher amounts, especially across our far southeast zones. Across the western half including all of NE TX into SE OK, amounts near or less than one inch still a pretty good bet. As mentioned above, forcing in association with the upper trough should quickly pivot to our north and east Saturday Morning with the rainfall ending with it. Don't think clouds will clear on Saturday as we will likely see this happen Sat Night into Sunday across the region. 13 && .LONG TERM... (Sunday through next Thursday) Issued at 1257 PM CST Fri Jan 26 2024 We will be on the backside of the upper trough on Sunday which should be across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, into the Lower Miss Valley to begin the day. Our region will remain in northwest flow aloft through at least Wed as strong upper ridging is fcst to build across the Intermountain West through at least Tuesday before the ridge begins to migrate out east into the Great Plains. We should see a weak frontal passage sometime on Wednesday as a vigorous upper level trough bypasses out region to the north and east by midweek and this postfrontal airmass will be a little cooler compared to what the early part of the week will feel like. The late week forecast looks confusing as the westerlies may try to respond with some sort of weakness across the Southern Plains by Friday and just beyond this 7-day forecast which would imply increased rain chances. A lot will depend on just how strong the Great Plains ridging will be as some of the medium range progs are hinting as some sort of omega blocking upper pattern settling in across the Lower 48 which would likely extend the upcoming dry pattern through next weekend. For now will not deviate from the NBM which suggest low pops returning to the forecast by late next week. 13 && .AVIATION... (00Z TAFS) Issued at 529 PM CST Fri Jan 26 2024 For the 27/00Z TAFs, CIGs will continue to descend to IFR and LIFR levels with the rainfall moving into area airspace, with associated drops in VIS with heavier rainfall. These conditions will continue through at least daybreak, with areas of fog development possible in the wake of the departing rainfall, which looks to exit the area altogether by midmorning. CIGs, however, do not look to climb much during the day.
