.SYNOPSIS...
Gusty east to northeast winds are expected today through the
weekend. Winds look strongest on Saturday with a gradual weakening
through the day Sunday. Periods of weaker northeast to east winds
will continue early next week, especially on the mountain foothills.
It will be warmer through early next week with high temperatures 5
to 10 degrees above average. A wetter, windier, and cooler
pattern is expected to develop around Thursday of next week and
continue into the following week.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

A few low clouds and areas of fog, locally dense, were reported this
morning, mainly in the valleys. Winds have shifted to the northeast
with gusts since midnight in the 35 to 40 mph range on mountain
foothills and below the passes. Northeast winds are expected to
strengthen into Saturday shifting to more of an easterly component
into Sunday. Peak gusts tonight into Saturday will be 40 to 50 mph
with isolated gusts to 65 mph. Local guidance still supports
strongest gusts for Fremont Canyon in the Santa Ana Mountains of
around 55 mph. Guidance has trended slightly stronger for Sill Hill
in the San Diego County mountains with strongest gusts to around 65
mph. The winds will begin to weaken on Saturday night and Sunday
with the stronger gusts to 35 to 45 mph.

A ridge of high pressure will set up over the western US today,
remaining in place through the weekend, and slowly moving to the
east by early next week. That combined with offshore winds will
bring warmer conditions to the area this weekend. Highs in the
valleys will be in the upper 70s, locally reaching 80 degrees. For
the low deserts highs will be in the upper 70s, in the High Desert
mid to upper 60s, mountains will be in the 50s, and the coast is
expected to hit the low 70s. Warmest days of the week look to be
Saturday and Sunday with a gradual cooling expected to start
Sunday along the coast, with cooler conditions spreading east into
next week.

A prolonged wetter pattern is expected to develop during the
latter half of next week. Global models are in good agreement
that a troughing pattern will set up along the US West Coast
Thursday, and current outlooks have that pattern maintaining into
the beginning of the first full week of February. This is expected
to bring wetter, colder, and windier conditions to Southern
California. There is still a lot that needs to be worked out with
specifics of the forecast, but for the global models, 80+% of
ensembles members are showing measurable precipitation for
Thursday into Friday. While a wetter pattern is expected to
develop, just how wet and when the more significant periods of
precipitation might occur remain much less certain. This system
also looks like it could bring windier and colder conditions than
previous storms this winter. NBM snow levels start out around 6500
on Thursday of next week, then fall to around 4500 feet by Friday.
Current ensemble guidance is indicating gusty westerly winds could
impact the coastal waters to the deserts as early as Thursday.

We'll be sharing more information as the details become clearer in
the coming days.
