Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 938 AM PDT Sat Oct 26 2024 .SYNOPSIS... Above average temperatures are expected away from the immediate coast this weekend. Night and morning low clouds and fog are expected each day, with coverage spreading further inland into portions of the valleys by early next week. Cooler, windier, and wetter weather is expected Monday into Tuesday. Below average temperatures will continue through most of next week. Patchy frost is possible for the High Desert during the middle of the week. && .DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE... SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES... Visible satellite imagery at 9 AM this morning was showing areas of low clouds along the immediate coast with high clouds streaming west to east across the area. Areas of dense fog are occurring along the portions of the coastline where low clouds are present. Fog is expected to dissipate through the morning for most locations. High clouds are expected to stick around for today into Sunday. Patchy low cloud coverage and fog is expected again along the coast tonight into Sunday morning. The presence of high clouds may inhibit widespread low cloud coverage and the development of dense fog. High temperatures today are expected to be 3 to 5 degrees warmer than Friday for the coast, valleys, and low deserts. Highs for places away from the immediate coast are forecast to be 5 to 10 degrees warmer than average today. A few degrees of cooling is expected for most places Sunday as an incoming trough of low pressure begins to push the ridge back to our south. Further cooling is expected for Monday and Tuesday, with Monday temperatures 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Sunday for the valleys, mountains, and High Desert. A few degrees of additional cooling are expected for Tuesday with high temperatures 7 to 15 degrees below average. In addition to cooler conditions, the trough of low pressure will bring increased winds and periods of precipitation Monday into Tuesday. Westerly winds will begin to increase early Monday morning, peak late Monday night/early Tuesday, and decrease through Tuesday morning. Strongest winds will be on the desert mountain slopes, deserts, and through passes. Peak gusts of 35 to 45 mph are expected in the deserts and desert mountain slopes. Gusts 55 to 65 mph are possible through mountain passes. Breezy conditions will occur west of the mountains Monday evening, though winds will stay mainly below 25 mph. Periods of light precipitation are expected Monday into early Tuesday. Increasing moisture combined with a weak shortwave moving through the area ahead of the main trough passage Monday morning may produce areas of light rain or drizzle. Another round of potentially more widespread precipitation is expected Monday night into Tuesday. Overall, rainfall totals continue to look light with totals of a tenth of an inch or less for most locations in an west of the mountains. Local amounts totaling closer to a quarter of an inch may occur on the coastal mountain slopes. Latest guidance from the NBM has chances of light rain in the deserts Monday night into Tuesday, but that is not well supported by the individual ensemble members of the GFS and ECMWF. The majority of members from both models are completely dry for the lower deserts. About 30 percent of the GEFS members and 20 percent of the ECMWF members show light rain in the High Desert. If any rain does fall, it may evaporate before hitting the ground due to the dry air near the surface. Snow levels will also decrease enough to see a dusting of snow near 6000 feet and above late Monday into Tuesday morning. Dry conditions are expected for the middle to end of next week with high temperatures 5 to 10 degrees below average. Overnight lows will be below average for much of next week as well. It's possible patchy frost may develop Tuesday night into Wednesday morning in the High Desert. NBM chances of lows at Victorville at or below 35 degrees is 65 percent. Ensemble clusters start to diverge in solutions by next weekend with some solutions depicting another trough that could impact Southern California weather. && .AVIATION... 261500Z...Coast...Satellite shows low clouds/FG near the coastline with bases near 200-300ft MSL and VIS down to 3SM. The low clouds/FG is beginning to dissipate while SCT-BKN high clouds with bases near 12,000ft MSL move inland. Most coastal sites have already returned to VFR, with all expected to by 16z, but low stratus near the beaches may linger beyond this period. High clouds likely to continue through the afternoon. Low clouds/FG redevelop again tonight, but the continued high cloud coverage will likely make the marine layer stratus even patchier tonight, with very low confidence in timing/locations of any CIGs. Should any occur, will feature similar bases/tops/visibility as this morning's clouds. Valleys/Mountains/Deserts...SCT-BKN clouds above 20,000 ft MSL will gradually increase through the day, but otherwise VFR conditions will prevail through Sunday morning. && .MARINE... Patchy areas of dense fog with visibilities less than 1SM have materialized this morning, especially for the nearshore waters. Any low clouds/fog should lift by 10 AM. Patchy dense fog will develop again tonight into Sunday morning, likely to a lesser extreme than this morning. No additional hazardous marine conditions are expected for the remainder of the weekend. Strong northwest winds and increasing swell are expected Monday into Tuesday, leading to hazardous marine conditions. There is an 80-90% chance of gale force winds in the outer coastal waters, mainly near San Clemente Island. Wind and sea conditions will improve Tuesday night and Wednesday. && .BEACHES... Wind swell will increase the surf to 4-6 feet Monday into Tuesday, with higher sets to 7 feet Monday night. This will generate hazardous swimming conditions and strong rip currents. && .SKYWARN... Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions. && .SGX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... CA...None. PZ...None. && PUBLIC...CO AVIATION/MARINE/BEACHES...Zuber
