.SYNOPSIS...
Chances of isolated showers are in the forecast for this evening
into early Sunday morning. Periods of gusty westerly winds are
expected over the mountains and into the deserts into early Sunday.
Conditions will quickly dry out and winds will transition to
northerly to northeasterly, bringing elevated to areas of critical
fire weather conditions to portions of the San Bernardino county
mountain foothills and portions of the Inland Empire. For the middle
of the week, we're monitoring the potential for stronger and more
widespread northeasterly to easterly Santa Ana winds which could
bring periods of critical fire weather conditions to mountain
foothills and portions of the valleys.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
Visible satellite at 9 AM was showing areas of high clouds moving
northwest to southeast across Southern California. So far this
morning, the radar has been quiet, with only a few weak returns
moving across portions of the High Desert. No measurable rainfall
was recorded out of those showers. Latest high resolution
guidance has the most likely chances of shower activity for later
this evening into early Sunday morning. HRRR/WRF models depict
greatest chances (60-70%) across San Diego County and coastal
facing slopes where orographic lift will contribute to greater
chances for rainfall. Light showers are possible along and west of
the mountains, with highest totals locally near a half inch along
the SD County coastal slopes, less than one tenth of an inch or
less elsewhere. If any snow does fall, it will be a dusting for
locations above 6,000 feet, though chances look minimal. Showers
will diminish from north to south along the coastal slopes by
early Sunday morning. Breezy west winds will occur with this
system as well this afternoon and overnight. Most impactful winds
will be felt across desert slopes and the Anza Borrego desert in
San Diego county with wind gusts 35-50 mph, locally higher below
passes.
As far as temperatures go, high temperatures will run 5 to 15
degrees below average today and Sunday. Temperatures in the valleys,
mountains, and High Desert will see the greatest departure from
normal. A warming trend is expected for early next week. There has
been a slight shift in temperature guidance from previous forecasts
for the middle of next week. With the low pressure system expected
to dig into the Great Basin/desert southwest temperatures in the
deserts are expected to decrease from Tuesday's highs. Due to the
cold nature of the low pressure system, some cold air advection may
occur which would lower temperatures west of the mountains a few
degrees from Tuesday's highs. The strength and track of the low will
ultimately determine how long the cooler temperatures will linger,
but latest forecast has a warming trend in place for the end of the
week into the upcoming weekend.
The upper level low (responsible for our slight chance of showers
and uptick in west winds) is expected to dig into the Great Basin
Sunday and weaken as it digs into the Four Corners region by early
Monday. This is expected to bring a swift shift in winds from
onshore to offshore Sunday. Gusty northerly to northeasterly winds
are expected on the coastal slopes and foothills of the San
Bernardino mountains and below the Cajon Pass into the Inland
Empire. Winds are also expected to increase on the foothills of the
Santa Ana mountains, locally into inland Orange County. Winds are
expected to peak Monday morning. Peak gusts 35 to 45 mph are
expected, with local gusts up to 55 mph through wind prone passes
and canyons. Dry conditions are expected to accompany these winds
bringing elevated fire weather conditions to the foothills of the
Santa Ana mountains and portions of inland Orange County. Periods of
critical fire weather conditions are expected for western portions
of the San Bernardino County mountains and the Inland Empire mainly
below the Cajon Pass. Winds are expected to weaken into Monday
evening, but weak north to northeast winds may linger into Tuesday
morning.
For the middle of next week the latest guidance from the global
ensembles has roughly 80 percent of solutions showing a new low
pressure system digging into the Great Basin with about 20 percent
showing the low more over the Four Corners region by Wednesday. For
Thursday, 60 percent of solutions have the low over Arizona, with 25
percent showing of solutions with the low over the Four Corners and
15 percent of solutions showing the low further east over New
Mexico. Solutions with the low in the Great Basin and over Arizona
would bring stronger winds to the area Wednesday and Thursday, while
solutions with the low further east would result in weaker winds.
While there is still some uncertainty and spread in potential
solutions for the middle of next week, there is the potential for
a stronger and more widespread Santa Ana wind event.

.AVIATION...
021500Z...Coasts/Valleys...SCT-BKN deck of low clouds based at
around 2000-3500ft MSL across coastal San Diego County with FEW-SCT
clouds closer to 2000ft MSL over portions of Orange County. Inland
and northward spread of the low clouds will continue, with bases
gradually rising above 3000ft MSL over the next few hours. A BKN
layer of high clouds with bases near 20,000ft MSL has overspread
much of the region this morning and will continue throughout the
day. -RA is possible for the coasts and valleys beginning around 01-
03z this evening with any shower activity tapering off by 10-12z
Sunday morning. VIS reductions possible down to 4-6 SM and locally
lower CIGs 1500-2500 ft MSL in showers and over higher coastal
terrain. South-southwesterly winds along the coast this
morning/early afternoon veer to the northwest after 20z this
afternoon, with intermittent gusts up to 15-20 mph.
Mountains/Deserts...High clouds with bases near 20,000ft MSL have
generally overtaken the region, and will continue throughout the day
and into tonight. -RA most likely after about 00z for the mountains,
with -SN possible for highest elevations above 6000-7000ft. Local
VIS reductions to 4-6SM and lower CIGs possible in SHRA/SHSN. Cloud
bases around 5000ft-10000ft MSL later this afternoon with areas of
terrain obscuration by Saturday evening. Gusty west winds gradually
strengthening early this afternoon, carrying into the overnight
hours, with gusts 25-35 kts possible, primarily in the mountains.
Localized gusts up to 40-45kts possible for the mountain passes.
VIS reductions possible down to 3-5SM in areas of blowing dust.

Increasing winds and building seas expected this afternoon, lasting
through late Sunday. Gusts likely peaking to 20-25kt in the outer
coastal waters (30-60 NM from the coast) near San Clemente Island.
Seas peaking overnight tonight at 6-8 feet through the outer waters
and 4-5 feet in the nearshore waters. A Small Craft Advisory is in
effect for the outer coastal waters this afternoon into early Sunday
morning. Scattered showers are possible (30-50% chance) over the
marine waters, especially late Saturday evening through early Sunday
morning. Conditions will improve Sunday afternoon into Monday with
no hazardous marine conditions expected through Wednesday.

the Santa Ana mountains into portions of inland Orange County, the

into Monday afternoon. Elevated to near-critical fire weather
conditions are expected for the Santa Ana mountains and inland
Orange County, with gusty winds 35 to 45 mph, locally up to 55 mph
in the passes and canyons of the Santa Ana mountains. Minimum
daytime relative humidity there will be 15 to 20 percent. Periods
of critical fire weather conditions are expected for western
portions of the coastal slopes of the San Bernardino county
mountains and in the Inland Empire below the Cajon Pass. Peak wind
gusts there will be 35 to 45 mph, with minimum daytime relative
humidity as low as 10 to 15 percent. Strongest winds are expected
early Monday morning. Winds are expected to weaken into Tuesday
but remain northerly/northeasterly for the early morning hours
before becoming more westerly during the afternoon.
Another round of potentially stronger and more widespread
northeasterly to easterly winds are possible for the middle of next
