.SYNOPSIS...
A deep marine layer and a coastal eddy will maintain cloudy
conditions along and west of the mountains along with drizzle and
isolated light showers into Wednesday morning. On Wednesday night
and Thursday strong northeast winds over portions of Orange
County, the Inland Empire, and the San Bernardino County mountains.
Friday and Saturday a deep trough over the Southwest will bring a
chance for showers, greatest over the mountains. Showers may
continue into Sunday. Warmer and drier Monday and Tuesday.

.Evening Update...
After a few hours of clearing across the coastal areas this
afternoon, low clouds have filled back in across the coastal basin
and are extending through the Cajon and San Gorgonio Passes this
evening. The 00Z KNKX sounding shows the marine inversion based
near 4000 ft MSL, down about 4000 ft from this morning. While
the deep saturated boundary layer was no longer present, hi-res
model soundings suggests top-down saturation again tonight as a
short wave moves through interor California. This will produce
another round of drizzle and isolated light showers tonight into
Wednesday morning. Any accumulation will mostly be less than one-
tenth inch.
Gusty west winds continue across the desert mountain slopes into
the deserts where gusts range anywhere from 25 to 45 mph, as high
as 50 mph below the San Gorgonio Pass. West winds will slowly
weaken overnight, turning more northwesterly to northerly on
Wednesday.

.Previous Discussion...
On Wednesday night a deep closed low over the Great Basin will dig
southwest and then remain nearly stationary over the Southwest
through Sunday. A period of strong northeast winds is forecast
late Wednesday night into Thursday and the combination of the
strong mid level winds and offshore pressure gradients will make
this a strong wind event. A High Wind Watch is in effect for the
San Bernardino Mountains, the Inland Empire and all of Orange
County Wednesday night through 6 PM Thursday for sustained winds
of 20-30 mph with gusts from 60-70 mph. Isolated gusts to 80 mph
are possible below the Cajon Pass and in the Santa Ana Mountains
and Foothills.
The winds will peak Thursday morning, then decrease Thursday
afternoon and Thursday night as the closed low moves south over the
Lower Colorado Valley and both upper level support and surface
pressure gradients weaken. Moisture wrapping around this deep
closed low into SoCal may bring showers Thursday night through
Saturday, possibly as late as Sunday. The greatest chances will
be in the mountains, but some showers may make it across the
valleys and all the way to the coast. Given the colder inside
track of this low, snow levels will genearlly be around 4000-4500
ft late Thursday into Friday, rising to around 5000-5500 ft Friday
afternoon into Saturday as cold air advection weakens.
High temperatures will be dependent on the eventual track of the
upper low, but the downslope northeast winds west of the mountains
will bring near average temperatures to the coastal and valleys
zones Friday and Saturday, and the colder northeast winds will keep
the mountain and desert areas below average. Sunday and Monday will
warmer in all areas.

130415Z...Coast/Valleys...BKN/OVC clouds with variable and
occasional layered bases 1700-4000 ft MSL and tops to 6000 ft MSL
will continue overnight with gradual dissipation 12Z-17Z Wed. Areas
of terrain obscurations will occur through 17Z Wed. Local VIS 3-5
miles will occur in DZ 08Z-15Z Wed. Otherwise, SCT-
occasional BKN clouds above 20000 ft MSL will prevail through Wed
evening.
Mountains/Deserts...Areas of terrain obscurations will occur on the
coastal slopes below 6000 ft MSL in clouds with local DZ.
Otherwies, SCT-BKN clouds above 20000 feet MSL with unrestricted VIS
will continue today and tonight. Areas of west surface winds with
gusts 25-45 kt will continue through 17Z Wed through San Gorgonio
Pass and along the desert mountain slopes with MOD up/downdrafts.

West-northwest winds with local gusts 20-25 knots will occur in
the outer coastal waters through around 2 AM Wednesday, mostly
near and south of San Clemente Island. Northeast winds Thursday
could produce gusts to 25 knots and hazardous conditions between

conditions are expected through Sunday.
