A deep marine layer
will result in areas of drizzle or light rain in some locations
tonight into Friday morning. A large low pressure system over the
northeast Pacific will move slowly inland along the US West Coast
through the weekend. Strong winds are expected along the mountain
ridges, desert slopes, and into the deserts. Showers and mountain
snow above 5000-6000 ft are expected Friday through Sunday, with
the best chances of precipitation on Saturday. Below average
temperatures will maintain themselves into next week. There are
additional chances of precipitation around the middle of next
week.

Evening update...
The 00Z KNKX sounding shows a marine inversion based near 4700 ft
MSL with the saturated layer around 1500 ft thick. Clouds have
already filled in across most areas along the mountains to the
coast this evening. Some patchy drizzle or light showers are
possible west of the mountains again tonight, though any
accumulation would be limited to a couple hundredths of an inch.
For the remainder of the mountains and into the deserts, breezy
southwest to west winds will continue into Friday, strongest
along the desert mountain slopes and below the San Gorgonio pass
where gusts of 30-45 mph will occur. Friday will be a few degrees
cooler across the region with highs 5 to 10 degrees normal for
most areas, and around 1 to 3 degrees below normal in the low
deserts.

Previous discussion...
As the broad area of low pressure digs south into the Great Basin
Friday night, winds will begin to increase more significantly over
the mountains, desert mountain slopes, and into the deserts. Winds
are expected to be strongest Saturday evening into Sunday as the low
pressure system slowly moves east. Peak wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph
are expected, with strongest winds on mountain ridges and desert
mountain slopes. Gusts 45 to 60 mph possible in the deserts with
the strongest winds near the foothills of the San Bernardino
Mountains in the Lucerne Valley area as well as below the San
Gorgonio Pass. Latest guidance has winds peaking Saturday night
and slowly diminishing through the day Sunday. These strong gusty
winds will make travel difficult at times, mainly for high profile
vehicles traveling in those windy locations and for all vehicles
traveling in the mountains. Winds on the coastal mountain slopes
are not expected to be as strong, with peak gusts 30 to 40 mph
expected for those locations.

Periods of precipitation are expected from the coast to the
mountains Friday evening into Sunday. Showers are expected to be
scattered in coverage. Light to moderate rain is expected, with
rain rates peaking around 0.25 inches per hour at times. Best
chance of rain is on Saturday. Forecast rainfall totals for Friday
afternoon through Sunday are: 0.10-0.25 inches for San Diego
coast and valleys, locally up to 0.40 inches in northern San Diego
County; 0.25-0.50 inches for the Inland Empire; 0.30-0.40 inches
for Orange County; 1-2.50 inches in the San Bernardino County
mountains (below snow level); 0.50-0.75 inches for the San Diego
and Riverside County mountains; and 0.10 of an inch or less for
the deserts.

Periods of snow are also expected. Most of the snow will accumulate
in the San Bernardino County mountains and on the higher peaks of
the Riverside County mountains. Snow levels around 6000 feet on
Saturday are expected to fall to around 5000 feet on Sunday.
Precipitation is expected to be tapering off as snow levels drop
to their lowest levels. It is looking unlikely the San Diego
county mountains will see accumulating snowfall. Current forecast
has 3 to 7 inches of snow above 7000 ft, 1 to 3 inches of snow
between 6000- 7000 ft, and a trace to an inch below 6000 ft.
Travel will be hazardous in the mountains, especially in the San
Bernardino and Riverside county mountains where periods of snow
and gusty winds will reduce visibility. Road conditions are also
expected to be slippery with snow accumulating on roads.

Showers are expected to decrease through the day Sunday, ending over
the mountains in the afternoon. Early next week is expected to be
dry, but temperatures will continue to be below average for this
time of year. There are additional chances for precipitation around
the middle of next week. Low confidence in details and timing,
current forecast follows the NBM with slight chances (15-20%) of
precipitation Wednesday and Thursday.
