.SYNOPSIS...
An arctic cold front will cross the Mid Atlantic region this
morning leading to a resurgence of wind and mountain snow
showers. A disturbance in the Midwest will track along this
front, bringing snow to the Tennessee Valley and south-central
Appalachians Monday and Monday night. Otherwise high pressure
with well below normal temperatures will cover much of the area
through Thursday.

Arctic front had advanced into the mountains of eastern West
Virginia as of 10AM. A band of snow along the front was slowly
progressing into Greenbrier and Summer Counties. Have adjusted
the cloud cover and probability of precipitation to reflect the
latest radar trends and last couple runs of the HRRR. Snow
amounts this afternoon will be less than one inch for most
locations. The exception will be in Western Greenbrier and near
Flat Top. Only minor adjustments made to temperatures today.
As of 235 AM EST Sunday...
An Arctic front will move across the mountains this morning, then
clear the Piedmont by mid afternoon. High pressure is currently
blocking the Gulf, so this front will have limited moisture to
work with and therefore little precipitation with it. Majority
of the snow will fall along western slopes with maybe a flurry
or two reaching the Blue Ridge.
A pressure gradient between a lee trough and the front, followed by
strong cold air advection will bring breezy and gusty conditions to
the area today. There is a Wind Advisory for RNK's western counties
with the strongest gusts along ridgetops. High pressure settles
into the area tonight, allowing the winds to subside.
High temperatures should occur early across the mountains, then fall
into the 20s through the afternoon as cold air surges into the
region. East of the Blue Ridge may see temperatures peaking by
early afternoon in the 40s, then falling the rest of the day.
Overnight, temperatures will dip into the teens across the
mountains to low to mid 20s east of the Blue Ridge.
The combination of Arctic air and breezy conditions may produce wind
chill values in the single digit to teens across the mountains this
afternoon. These wind chills values remain overnight, even though
the winds will subside.
A disturbance could bring light snow early Monday morning
across the mountains. Since this snow could impact travel, posted
a Winter Weather Advisory for snow in our western counties.

A look at the 13 Jan 00Z NCEP Ensemble Mean 500 mb Geopotential
Heights offers the following scenario during this portion of the
forecast. A deep and cold low is expected to be centered over James
Bay on Monday. An associated deep longwave trough is expected to
extend south into Texas. By Tuesday, this cold trough axis is
expected to situated along the Mississippi Valley. By Wednesday,
averaging takes away the amplitude of the trough axis, but its
average position is somewhere close to, or just east of the East
Coast by Wednesday evening.
At the surface, an average trough/frontal position extends southeast
from the James Bay low into NY/PA Monday evening, then more of a
southward position into eastern VA/NC. Heading into Tuesday and
Wednesday, this feature is expected to strengthen across the
Canadian Maritimes with a trough/front extending south into the
Atlantic. For our region, cold surface high pressure is expected to
gradually build into the region, all the while maintaining a
northwest flow into the region between the departing low and the
approaching high.
A look at the 13 Jan 12Z NAEFS output shows a trend of decreasing
850mb temperatures. By Wednesday, values are expected to be around
-14C to -10C across the area.
The above pattern offers the potential of light precipitation across
the area until such time the axis of the upper trough is east of the
region late Tuesday. However, as we transition into northwest flow,
and much colder air arrives, lingering flurries across the mountains
will be possible simply by the existence of upslope low level cloud
cover with temperatures around the preferred dendritic growth zone.
This should be the case until the advancing drier high pressure wins
out by Wednesday with little to no cloud cover expected.

A look at the 13 Jan 00Z NCEP Ensemble Mean 500mb Geopotential
Heights offers the following scenario during this portion of the
forecast. On Thursday, the mean position of a longwave trough is
expected to extend from Quebec southwest through Michigan and
farther into the Arklatex region. As we progress through Friday and
then Saturday, this feature is expected to approach our region with
the mean position centered overhead by Saturday afternoon/evening.
At the surface, a poorly averaged trough is positioned over Virginia
and the Carolinas Thursday evening. As we head into Friday and
Saturday, the average position of this trough becomes more
pronounced over the western Atlantic. Across our region, the eastern
extent of broad surface high begins to enter the area.
A look at the 13 Jan 12Z NAEFS output shows a trend for 850mb
temperatures to trend colder through the period after a relatively
milder period on Thursday as compared to earlier in the week.
Thursday evening, values will average -5C to -1C across the region.
By Saturday, those values are expected to range from -16C to
-14C. Values within this range correspond to within the coldest 2.5
to 10 percentile of the 30-year climatological average.
The above scenario with the passage of the upper trough, and arrival
of much colder points toward a forecast with scattered rain/snow
showers across the area, especially just prior and coincident to the
passage of the upper trough. Given hold cold the 850mb temperatures
are expected to be, we may see one of those scenarios where
lingering upslope low level cloud cover will be within dendritic
growth zone and provide a least flurries from their vary existence
across the mountains on Saturday.

.AVIATION /15Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 620 AM EST Sunday...
An Arctic front will bring MVFR ceilings and snow showers to
western slopes, possibly to the Blue Ridge this morning. Cold
dry air behind the front should have all sites returning to VFR
in the afternoon. Also with the frontal passage, breezy and
gusty conditions are likely with gusts up to 40 kts, especially
along the Blue Ridge.
A disturbance working its way east across the Midwest will
bring some mid and high clouds into the region overnight
tonight. Some light snow/flurries are possible across the
mountains.
OUTLOOK...
The next chance of snow will be in the mountains on Monday and
Monday night with widespread VFR mid and high clouds. Snow and
MVFR ceilings will be most likely at KBLF.
VFR conditions expected to return Tuesday through Wednesday but
airmass will be unseasonably cold.
The next opportunity for precipitation and sub-VFR ceilings and
visibilities will be on Thursday.
