.SYNOPSIS...
An arctic cold front will cross the Mid Atlantic region late tonight
into Sunday morning leading to a resurgence of wind and mountain
snow showers. Low pressure that develops along the front in the
southeast United States will bring snow to the Tennessee Valley and
central Appalachians Monday and Monday night. Otherwise high
pressure with well below normal temperatures will cover much of the
area through Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...

 - New Wind Advisory planned for late tonight

Pockets of upper level energy will rotate through the broad long
wave 500 MB trough tonight and Sunday. This will bring an arctic
cold front through the region at the surface on Sunday morning.
Winds back to the southwest ahead of the front and wind speeds
diminish tonight, with most gusts remaining below 25 mph. Have
delayed clearing on the western slopes of the central Appalachians
until 4PM and in southeast West Virginia until 7PM as the upslope
flow reduces.

Behind the front Sunday morning, the wind direction returns to the
west and wind speeds increase. Expecting a few gusts around 50 mph
from Grayson county into the northwest North Carolina mountains
around sunrise so a new Wind Advisory will be issued.

Models showed limited upslope snow on Sunday that will accumulate
but with the in-cloud temperatures plenty cold enough to support
snow formation, isolated to scattered flurries will be possible
wherever there is stratocumulus.

Due to cold air advection behind the front on Sunday and persistent
cloud cover in the mountains will be trending toward the colder
guidance for maximum temperatures. No major changes to low
temperatures.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...

Key Messages:

2: A little bit of snow falling over a few days

Sunday night will be quite cold as an occluded low remains to our
north, creating cold air advection in northwest flow. However, given
that it will be in late stage occlusion and moving further north,
winds will begin to calm from the gustier previous couple days. By
early Monday morning however, temperatures will be in the low 20s
east of the Blue Ridge, and in the teens west.

On Monday as a jet streak moves over the broad troughing and over
the Mid-Atlantic, some snow will form in response to the increased
upper forcing. The axis of the mid-level trough will follow closely
behind, maintaining some broad snow coverage in our area. Snow rates
won't be particularly heavy, so even as snow tapers off late on
Monday, early Tuesday, the highest amounts that will be seen in
Western Greenbrier of 2-4". That's occurring over a range of 24-36
hours. Further to the east into the NRV and NC foothills 1-2" is
more likely, and east of the Blue Ridge will see a dusting to a
couple tenths of snow.

What had previously been expected to be the driver for snow this
week, an area of low pressure undergoing cyclogenesis as it moves
north just off the east coast, is now tracking too far east and will
have minimal snow impact on our area. Once snow ends on Tuesday,
don't expect another round on Wednesday.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...

On Wednesday, the broad trough holding an arctic air mass over most
of the country will be settled deepest into our area. Accordingly,
expect the coldest temperatures on Wednesday, 10-15 degrees below
normal. Highs west of the Blue Ridge will be unlikely to break out
of the 20s. Late Thursday and into Friday the next cyclone
approaches from the Gulf states and swings just to our south
through the Carolinas. If this track maintains itself over the
next week, this is generally a more favorable track for snow.
Confidence in impacts late next week are extremely low.

.AVIATION /20Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 205 PM EST Saturday...

the local TAFs locations. Have also added LLWS to the KBCB TAF.

Models showed limited upslope snow on Sunday that will accumulate
but with the in-cloud temperatures plenty cold enough to support
snow formation, isolated to scattered flurries will be possible
wherever there is stratocumulus.

Average confidence for wind, visibility, and ceiling.

OUTLOOK...

The next chance of snow will be in the mountains on Monday and
Monday night with widespread VFR mid and high clouds. Snow and
MVFR ceilings will be most likely at KBLF.

VFR conditions expected to return Tuesday through Wednesday but
airmass will be unseasonably cold.

The next opportunity for precipitation and sub-VFR ceilings and
visibilities will be on Thursday.
