High pressure will build across the area Today, the center
passing to our south. Clockwise wind flow around the high will
promote a westerly breeze, gusty during the afternoon.
A strong storm system will bring another round of rain and
strong winds to the area Friday into Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 200 AM EST Thursday...

Key Messages:

1) Dry weather for today and tonight.
2) Breezy in the afternoon.
3) Temperatures 5 degrees above normal

Expecting warmer temperatures today as clouds and cold air
retreat to the north. Readings should top out 10 degrees warmer
compared to yesterday with highs about 5 degrees above the
seasonal norm.

High pressure centered to our south will be the dominant
weather feature for us today...clockwise wind flow around the
high promoting a westerly breeze, along with sunshine and drying.
The pressure gradient tightens this afternoon as a disturbance
passes by to our north. This will result in breezy conditions
this afternoon with 10 to 20 mph westerly winds and gusts up to
25 mph. Gusts of 30 to 35 mph area possible across the WV/VA
Highlands.

The winds are expected to subside this evening, then ramp back
up again along the western slopes of the Appalachian Divide late
tonight. Low pressure is developing over the southern plains,
and this feature is progged to strengthen rapidly as it begins
to trek northeast across the Mid-West and Ohio Valley...a track
similar to the last storm system. This will bring increasing
southerly winds ahead of the system with 85H winds progged to be
close to 40 kts by daybreak Friday. Even stronger winds are
progged later in the day Friday. That said, may need to hoist
wind headlines even before the rain arrives Friday...with
initial wind focus on those favored southeasterly downslope
areas along and west of the TN/NC border, counties in far
southwestern VA (Tazewell and Smyth), and along the Appalachian
divide from BLF-BKW and into western Greenbrier. Similar to the
last storm, we had gusts of 40 to 60 mph withing this corridor.

Clouds will be on the increase late tonight, but should not
impeded nocturnal cooling cycle...temperatures tonight dipping
into the 20s. Biggest difference this go around, compared to
the last storm, is the timing. Onset of precip with the last
storm occurred at night when the temperatures were cold
promoting wintry forms of precipitation. This time around it
looks as though precipitation onset will occur later in the day
Friday, temperatures rising above critical prior to onset.

Confidence in the near term is high.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 230 PM EST Wednesday...

Key Messages:

1) Friday and Friday night is expected to be wet and windy.

3.) Winds will be an issue again and severe weather is possible
for parts of the NC/VA piedmont Friday.

A high pressure wedge remains in place Thursday night, but warm
air advection ahead of an advancing system will spread clouds
into the area in the early morning hours. This system follows a
similar track to our last, pushing first a warm front and then
a cool front through the Deep South and the eastern states.

The surface low will deepen quickly to a 975mb low over
the southern Great Lakes by Friday evening, becoming negatively
tilted and bringing blizzard conditions to the Midwest. As the
system lifts north Friday night, much of the Mid Atlantic
region will be in a warm sector with a wide swath of mid to
upper level energy helping to bring widespread rain to our
area.

The better isentropic lift does not arrive until towards the
afternoon and evening. The timing will probably keep winter
weather from being an issue here, but there is a chance for
freezing rain or drizzle ahead of the main precipitation shield
early on, mainly for our highest terrain. QPF for our area will
thankfully be less than with this last system, with high
pressure taking its time to retreat. Still strong lifting and
gusty southeasterly winds will be able to wring out close to
0.50-1.50" through Saturday morning. The mountains will see the
brunt of it, and with so much recent rainfall, the potential for
flooding will once again become a concern.

Once again, a lifting warm front and very strong winds aloft
will create a good environment for embedded thunderstorms.
Shear will once again by high over the entire region, while CAPE
will be limited in our neck of the woods. Areas south and east
of us will see more of a severe weather threat, but we may well
be in another embedded line echo wave pattern situation with the
threat for tornadoes. Our cool temperatures and lower dew
points will keep our threat much lower than points south,
however.

The actual surface cold front is forecast to sweep across the
region Friday evening, with strong S to SE winds ahead of the
front veering to SW behind it. A wind advisory will likely be
needed when the time comes, featuring gusts in the 40 to 55 mph
range.

By Saturday, the storm will lose influence. Lingering clouds
and snow showers are expected through the weekend, with *
clearing east. Temperatures behind this system are not that
cold. Still looking at seasonal highs/lows through the weekend.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 1250 PM EST Wednesday...

Key messages:

 - High confidence of well below normal temperatures Tuesday and
   Wednesday

 - Potential for dangerous wind chills values increasing

 - Snow potential uncertain

No change in overall synoptic pattern this time frame with a
broad trough over much of the continental United States.
Monday and Tuesday a tracks a closed low from the upper
Mississippi Valley through the Ohio Valley and into New England.
Still a large spread in the guidance as to when and where any
coastal low will develop.

A cold front crosses the eastern United States on Monday which
leads in arctic air. Wednesday morning will have the coldest
temperatures, roughly 5 to 15 degrees below normal. There may be
snowfall along this front. Will have probability of
precipitation in the slight chance to chance range, higher than
NBM in some locations for Monday and Tuesday. WPC Winter Weather
Outlook has about a 20 percent probability of getting 0.25
liquid equivalent in the form of snow or sleet and the Winter
Storm Severity Index has up to a 20 percent chance of Minor
impact from snow on Monday and Monday night.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 145 AM EST Thursday...

Expecting mainly VFR for all terminals within the Blacksburg
service area today. Only exception may be some lingering MVFR
cigs along the WV Highlands vcnty of LWB.

weather is possible for parts of the NC/VA piedmont Friday
evening. Clouds and widespread rain will move into the area from
the WSW by Friday afternoon continuing into Friday night then
ending by Saturday morning. This will be accompanied by MVFR to
LIFR ceilings and visibilities.

There is a possibility of lingering MVFR ceilings in -SHSN for
BLF and LWB Saturday and Sunday.

As of 200 AM EST Thursday...

Flood crests were advancing down the Lower Roanoke and Dan
Rivers. Minor Flooding was ongoing along the lower reach of
the Roanoke River downstream of Brookneal and along the Dan
River downstream of Wentworth.

Future concern is for another round of potentially heavy rain
Friday. Forecast amounts of 0.5 to 1.50 may result in renewed
flooding late Friday into Saturday.
